2. Fyodor Dostoyevsky (author)
Born in Moscow in 1821 he was a Russian novelist, short story writer,
essayist and journalist.
His works engage with a variety of philosophical and religious themes.
When he was 15 he left school to enter the Nikolayev Military
Engineering Institute.
Arrested in 1849 for belonging to a literary group that discussed
banned books critical of Tsarist Russia, he was sentenced to death but
the sentence was commuted at the last moment. He spent four years
in a Siberian prison camp, followed by six years of compulsory military
service in exile.
He eventually became one of the most widely read and highly
regarded Russian writer within and beyond Russia.
His books have been translated into more than 170 languages, and
served as the basis for many films.
He died on 9 February 1881 (aged 59) in Saint Petersburg, Russian
Empire.

5. Plot
The book tells us the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, an ex –
student studying in St. Petersburg. He comes from a
relatively poor family , which consists of his mother and
sister. Stuck in poverty and trying to help his family he
devises a plan to kill an old lady who is a pawnbroker and
Ron her. Following these events the book depicts its effects
on Rodions mental and physical health and subsequently
the how it affects the people around him. The narrative
follows the twists and turns of Raskolnikov’s emotions, his
struggles, moral dilemma and mental anguish.
