Tips for filling out an online dating profile / Global Personals
For the uninitiated, the idea of online dating can be quite overwhelming. If you’re tempted to
look for love on the internet, but are unsure how to go about doing so, we have some tips
from Global Personals which should help. The first piece of advice, when setting up your
profile on a dating website, is to be yourself.
Whilst it might be tempting to embellish on your existing achievements and interests, there
really is no point in doing this, as it will inevitably lead to embarrassment and
disappointment, when your date realises that what you have said about yourself isn’t true. In
addition to this, if for example, you’re an introvert who likes to read, you’re not going to find
the right person for you, if you claim to love socialising, and being outdoors, on your profile.
On a similar note, Global Personals have found that it’s worth spending some time on your
profile, and answering all of the questions asked. Leaving too many sections blank, or not
putting up a clear photo, may mean that your profile gets overlooked by potential partners.
The fact is that the vast majority of people are simply not going to choose to go out on a date
with someone from the internet, if they don’t know what they look like, or what their
personal interests are.
It’s also important to proof-read your profile once you have finished writing it. Whilst
spelling and grammar might seem unimportant when it comes to matters of the heart, a lot of
people are put off potential partners by grammatically incorrect sentences and poor spelling.
First impressions do count; typos and garbled sentences may give people the impression of
carelessness.
Try to keep the content of your profile positive; rather than specifying what you’re not
looking for, focus on the type of person you are actually interested in finding. Cynicism
doesn’t tend to come across well online! Keep the answers in your profile light-hearted,
friendly and honest. Try to avoid clichés and make your profile unique, so that it stands out
for all the right reasons. Lastly, make sure that you are clear about what you are looking for
(for example, Global Personals notes that although a lot of online daters are seeking a a long
term relationship, just as many are interested in casual dating), and that you include important
information like your occupation, your age and whether or not you have any children.
