Zacharias refers to Jesus as the "horn of salvation" based on scriptures that portray horns as symbols of strength, power and glory. As the horn of salvation, Jesus provides a mighty and abundant salvation for mankind through his work as a savior and king. Zacharias affirms that Jesus will come from the house and lineage of David, fulfilling prophecies that the Messiah would descend from David's throne. Commentators discuss the metaphorical meaning of "horn" and how Jesus' salvation encompasses both physical deliverance and forgiveness of sins.

Adam Clarke Commentary
And hath raisedup a horn of salvation - That is, a mighty and glorious
Savior: a quotation from Psalm 18:2. Horns are the well knownemblems of
strength, glory, and power, both in the sacredand profane writers, because
the strength and beauty of horned animals consistin their horns. Horns have
also been consideredas emblems of light; therefore the heathen god Apollo is
representedwith horns, to point out the power, glory, and excellence ofthe
solarlight. The Chaldee paraphrastsometimes translates רק yb ,nroh, nerek ן
hcihw ,52:84 haimereJ ;01:2 leumaS 1 ,ahtuclam מלכותא ro ,htuclam מלכות
signify a kingdom: but it is likely that the allusion is here made to the horns of
the altar; and as the altar was a place of refuge and safety, and those who laid
hold on its horns were consideredto be under the protection of the Lord, so,
according to the expressionof Zacharias, Jesus Christis a new altar, to which
whosoeverflees shallfind refuge.
Some imagine that this form of speechis takenfrom the customof ancient
warriors, who had a horn of steelon the top of their helmets, which ordinarily
lay flat, till the personcame victorious from battle, and then it was erected, as
emblematicalof the victory gained. Such a horn as this is representedon the
helmet of the Abyssinian kings and warriors: see the plates in Bruce's Travels.
2. To this custom of wearing or lifting up the horn, the following scriptures are
thought to allude: 1 Samuel 2:10; Psalm112:9; Psalm148:4; Lamentations
2:17. In ancient gems and coins, this form of the horn on helmets is easily
discernible, sometimes flat, sometimes erected. A horn, filled with various
fruits, was also the emblem of abundance among the ancients:hence their
cornu copia, or horn of plenty. From all this we may learn that the Lord Jesus
gives a luminous, powerful, prevalent, glorious, and abundant Salvationor
Refuge to mankind.
In the house of his servant David - Or, in the family: so the word οικος, house,
is often used in the SacredWritings. In Luke 1:32, the angelstates that Mary
was of the family of David; and Zacharias, who, from the nature of his office,
must have been well acquainted with the public genealogicaltables, attests the
same thing. This is a matter of considerable importance;because it shows
forth the truth of all the prophetic declarations, which uniformly state that the
Messiahshould come from the family and sit on the throne of David.
Albert Barnes'Notes onthe Whole Bible
And hath raisedup a horn - A horn is a symbol of strength. The figure is
takenfrom the fact that in horned animals the strength lies in the “horn.”
Particularly, the great powerof the rhinoceros or unicorn is manifested by the
use of a single horn of great “strength,” placedon the head near the end of the
nose. When the sacredwriters, therefore, speak ofgreatstrength they often
use the word “horn,” Psalm148:14;Deuteronomy 33:17;Daniel 7:7-8; Daniel
7:21. The word salvation, connectedhere with the word “horn,” means that
this “strength,” orthis mighty Redeemer, was able to save. It is possible that
this whole figure may be takenfrom the Jewish“altar.” Oneachof the four
corners of the altar there was an eminence or small projectioncalled a
“horn.” To this persons might flee for safetywhen in danger, and be safe, 1
Kings 1:50; 1 Kings 2:28. Compare the notes at Luke 1:11. So the Redeemer
“may be” calledthe “horn of salvation,” because those who flee to him are
safe.
In the house - In the family, or among the descendants ofDavid.
3. John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible
And hath raisedup an horn of salvation for us,.... Meaning the Messiah,
whom God had now raisedup:
in the house of his servant David; in David's family, he being now conceived
by a virgin of his house;and who, in a little time, would be born in Bethlehem,
the city of David. He is called "anhorn of salvation", becausehe is a powerful
Saviour. "Horn" denotes power;it being that to a beast, as the arm is to a
man, by which it defends itself, and pushes down its enemies;and "salvation"
is the work Christ came to effect, and for which he was raisedup, and sent:
and a Saviour he is, and a mighty one, as appears from his doing and suffering
what he has; as bearing all the sins of his people, and making reconciliation
for them; obeying all the precepts of the law, and undergoing the penalty of it;
being made a curse, and becoming obedient to death, even the death of the
cross:as also, from his delivering them from sin, Satan, and the law, which no
other could have done; and from his grappling with, conquering, spoiling, and
destroying all his, and our enemies. Moreover, the word "horn" signifies regal
power, honour, and dignity; see Daniel7:24 and so may not only denote the
work of Christ as a Saviour, but his office also as a King, who in the discharge
of that is likewise a Saviour; for he not only rules, and governs, but protects,
defends, and preserves his, people, by his power; see 1 Samuel 2:10.

Calvin's Commentary on the Bible
69.He hath raisedup the horn of salvationThat is, saving power: (71) for,
when the throne of David was castdown, and the people scattered, the hope of
salvationhad to all appearance perished. Zacharias alludes to the predictions
of the prophets, which hold out that a sudden revival would take place, when
the state of affairs should have become melancholy and desperate. This mode
of expressionis borrowed from the passage,
“There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine
anointed,” (Psalms 132:17.)
But if it is only in Christ that Godhas put forth his power to save us, we are
not at liberty to depart from that method, if we desire to obtain salvation from
6. God. Let it be also observed, that this horn brings salvationto believers, but
terror to the ungodly, whom it scatters, orbruises and lays prostrate.
Of his servant David He is so denominated, not only because, like any one of
the godly, he worshipped God, but for this other reason, that he was his
chosenservantto rule and save his people, and thus to represent, along with
his successors, the person and office of Christ. Though there remained among
the Jews, atthat time, no trace of a kingdom, Zacharias, resting on the
promises of God, does not hesitate to callDavid the servant of God, in whom
God gave an example of the salvationwhich was to come. (72)Now that the
throne of Christ is erectedamongstus, that thence he may govern us, it
follows that he is actually appointed to us the author of salvation.

7. THEOPHYL. God seemedto be asleep, disregarding the sins of the multitude,
but in these last times coming in the flesh, He has risen up and trodden down
the evil spirits who hated us. Hence it is said, And he has raisedup an horn of
salvationto us in the house of his servant David.
ORIGEN Because Christwas born of the seedof David, according to the flesh,
it is said, A horn of salvationto us in the house of his servant David; as it has
also elsewhere beensaid, A vineyard has been planted in a horn, i.e. in Jesus
Christ.
CHRYS. Now by a horn he means power, glory, and honor, deriving it
metaphorically from the brute creatures, to whom Godhas given horns for
defense and glory.
THEOPHYL The kingdom of our Savior Christ is calledalso the horn of
salvation, because allour bones are clothed with flesh, but the horn alone
stretches beyond the flesh; so the kingdom of Christ is calledthe horn of
salvation, as reaching beyond the world and the delights of the flesh.
According to which figure David and Solomonwere consecratedby the horn

παιδὸς αὐτοῦ. The word does not here mean ‘son’ in the original, but
‘servant’ being the rendering of the Hebrew ebed, Psalms 132:10.
PeterPett's Commentary on the Bible
‘And has raisedup a horn of salvationfor us, in the house of his servant
David.’
And He is doing this by raising up a mighty weaponof deliverance in the
house of His servant David. The promised Davidic king was coming as a ‘horn
9. of salvation’ (in Psalms 18:2 ‘the horn of my salvation’ is the Lord Himself
delivering him from all his troubles). A ‘horn’ indicated power and strength.
It was through their horns that earthly creatures exertedtheir power
(compare Deuteronomy 33:17). And the Davidic king was seenas God’s horn
of salvation(compare Numbers 24:8). But note that in Luke 1:77 ‘salvation’
clearly includes the forgiveness ofsins. So this is not just political. The coming
of David’s son will not only bring deliverance but will also openup a fountain
for sin and uncleanness (Zechariah13:1).
We note there that this confirms that Mary is of Davidic descent, for no one
could at this stage know whether Josephwould go through with the marriage
(he nearly did not).
Whedon's Commentary on the Bible
69. Raisedup a horn of salvation—This image of his Church is takenfrom
nature, after the simplicity of primitive times. A horn is the strength, power,
and beauty of the animal that wears it; and so it became an image of power,
both in the ancient classicwriters and in the Old Testament. So Psalms 132:17
: “I will make the horn of David to bud.” From signifying power as a quality,
the word is made to signify a power, kingdom, or king.
Revelation17:12 : “The ten horns thou sawestare ten kings.”
Jeremiah48:25 : “The horn of Moabis cut off.” So here it is applied to the
Messiahaboutto be born.

Schaff's Popular Commentary on the New Testament
Luke 1:69. A horn of salvationfor us. This well-knownfigure of the Old
Testament(1 Samuel 2:10; Psalms 132:17), alluding to the horns of beasts as
their formidable weaponof defence, points out here a strong, powerful
10. defender, to rise in the house of his servantDavid. An allusion to the horns of
the altar is unlikely.
Luke 1:70 is parenthetical.
By the month of his holy prophets. The same thought which was expressedby

respecting the coming of Christ (Messianic prophecies),that this application
of prophecy was not something added to their meaning, but their real
meaning.—Ofold. This is more literal and more correctthan the E. V. The

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(69) Hath raisedup an horn of salvation.—The symbolism of the horn comes
from Psalms 132:17, where it is used of the representative of the House of
David, and answers to the “Anointed” of the other clause ofthe verse. It
originated obviously in the impression made by the horns of the bull or stag,
as the symbols of strength. Here, following in the steps of the Psalmist,
Zacharias uses it as a description of the coming Christ, who is to be raisedup
in the House of David.

12. Jesus Is the Horn of Salvation
Resource by John Piper
Scripture: Luke 1:67–79 Topic:The Personof Christ
When Herod was king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah of the
division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name
was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the
commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless. But they had no child
because Elizabethwas barren and both were advancedin years. (Luke 1:5–7)
But God, desiring to show that he regards the broken-heartedand that
nothing human canstop his resolves ontheir behalf, sends the mighty angel
Gabriel with a word for old Zechariah:
Your prayer has been heard and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and
you shall callhis name John. And you will have joy and gladness and many
will rejoice at his birth; for he will be greatbefore the Lord, and he shall
drink no wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even
from his mother's womb. And he will turn many of the sons of Israelto the
Lord their God, and he will go before him in the Spirit and power of Elijah, to
turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the disobedient to the
wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared. (Luke
1:13–17)
Zechariah couldn't believe the news. And saidas much. So Gabriel responded
with indignation:
I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I was sentto speak to
you and to bring you this good news. And, behold, you will be silent and
unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did
not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time. (Luke 1:19, 20)
13. Nine months later the time came. Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist. At
the child's circumcisionthe neighbors startedto call the child Zechariahafter
his father, but, in obedience to God, Zechariah wrote on a tablet: "His name is
John." And immediately his tongue was loosedand he was filled with the Holy
Spirit and prophesied:
Blessedbe the Lord God of Israel,
For he has visited us and accomplishedredemption for his people,
And has raisedup a horn of salvationfor us
In the house of David his servant—
As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old—
That we should be saved from our enemies,
And from the hand of all who hate us;
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers,
And to remember his holy covenant,
The oath which he swore to our father Abraham,
To grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
Might serve him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the MostHigh;
For you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
To give knowledge ofsalvation to his people
In the forgiveness oftheir sins,
Through the tender mercies of our God,
By which the day shall dawn upon us from on high
14. To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.
Zechariah's Silence and Solitude
Zechariah had had nine months of silence to brood and ponder and pray and
meditate on his Bible, the Old Testament. His silence may have been a divine
rebuke for his unbelief, but God always turns his rebukes into rewards for
those who keepfaith. Remember that, you who right now suffer from the
scars ofpast sins. If you keepfaith now God will turn the marks of sin into
memorials of grace. Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound
(Romans 5:20).
I love to think of Zechariah in those months, groaning under God's rebuke,
yet gradually discovering the reward. At first lacerating himself: "Why didn't
I believe the word of God? Why did I have to be so skeptical? Whata fool I
was!" But then, gradually, in the silence ofthose months (I think the angel
had struck Zechariah deaf as well as dumb because in verse 62 it says they
communicated to him with signs instead of speech)—graduallyin the silence
of those months, when he could not converse with his wife or friends,
Zechariah beganto see what was happening. It began to sink into his head
and heart that these were stupendous, unrepeatable, incredibly significant
days.
I cannot pass overthis experience of Zechariah without making an application
for our day. And it is this: If we don't seek out silence, we will probably not
feel the stupendous significance ofGod's work in history on our lives. It would
be a rare thing to be gripped and moved deeply in a noisy room. There is a
close correlationbetweenstillness and a sense ofthe stupendous. The most
astonishing things about reality will probably be missedby those who use the
radio and TV for a constantbackgrounddrone. Be still, be dumb and deaf,
and know that I am God. What would it mean for your life if for nine months
you could not hear or sayanything! I have tried to imagine what it would
mean for my ministry and home life. No preaching. No counseling. No singing.
15. But lots more seeing. Lots more looking into the eyes of my wife and sons.
(When was the last time you lookedsteadily into someone'seyes?)Lots more
reading the great books. Lots more writing journals, poems, letters, thoughts
about life. Lots more prayer and meditation on the Word of God. All in
absolute silence. If God should ever give me such a period, I hope that I would
turn it to as much goodas Zechariah did. BecausewhenZechariah came out,
he came out filled with the Holy Spirit and singing what has come to be known
as the Benedictus, a song filled with insight and with a sense ofthe stupendous
significance ofwhat was about to happen with the birth of Jesus. So while we
ponder now how we will seek some silence forourselves, letus learn from
what the Holy Spirit taught Zechariah.
Zechariah's Song of the Savior
Mostof Zechariah's song is takenup not with his own son but with the
salvationthe Messiahwouldbring. Only two verses (76 and 77)refer to John
the Baptistspecifically:He will go before the Lord to prepare his ways by
calling the people to repentance. The rest of the Benedictus is about what the
coming of Jesus is going to mean.
Zechariah begins in verse 68:"Blessedbe the Lord God of Israel, because he
has visited and redeemedhis people." Notice four remarkable things. First,
nine months earlierZechariah could not believe his wife would have a child.
Now, filled with the Holy Spirit, he is so confident of God's redeeming work in
the coming Messiahthat he puts it in the past tense. For the mind of faith, a
promised act of God is as good as done. Zechariahhas learned to take God at
his word and so has a remarkable assurance:"Godhas visited and
redeemed!"
Second, the coming of Jesus the Messiahis a visitation of God to our world:
"The God of Israel has visited and redeemed." Forcenturies the Jewish
people had languished under the conviction that God had withdrawn: the
spirit of prophecy had ceased, Israelhad fallen into the hands of Rome. And
all the godly in Israel were awaiting the visitation of God. Luke tells us in 2:25
that the devout Simeon was "looking forthe consolationofIsrael." And in
16. Luke 2:38 the prayerful Anna was "looking for the redemption of
Jerusalem." Thesewere days of greatexpectation. Now the long awaited
visitation of Godwas about to happen—indeed, he was about to come in a way
no one expected.
Third, he is coming to redeem. Don't pour into this word right awayall that
we know of redemption from the apostle Paul. Zechariah probably never
dreamed the Messiahwouldhave to die to accomplishredemption. It took
Jesus years to getthe factinto his disciple's heads that "the Son of Man must
suffer many things and be rejected. . . and be killed and on the third day be
raised." There had been hints of this in the Old Testament(like Isaiah53), but
none of the Jews in Jesus'day understood this.
What Zechariah had in mind when he said Godhad visited and redeemedhis
people was probably the same thing Moseshad in mind when he described
God's deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. In Exodus 6:6 Moses quotes
God, saying, "I am the Lord, I will bring you out from under the burden of
the Egyptians and I will deliver you from their bondage and I will redeemyou
with an outstretched arm and with greatacts of judgment." Zechariah, no
doubt, is hoping that the Israel of his day will be delivered from her
oppressive Romanoverlords and that Messiah, the king of David, will reign
over a liberated Israel. It has not been revealedto Zechariah that this
national-political deliverance will not happen at the first coming of the
Messiah, but only at his secondcoming. Nevertheless,we will see signs in
Zechariah's son that the redemption of the Messiahis more than national
liberation.
The fourth thing to notice about verse 68 is that God "has visited and
redeemedhis people." It is the "consolationofIsrael" for which Zechariah
hopes. It is the "Lord God of Israel" who is coming to redeem his people. The
people in view are the people of Israel. This was the chosennation to whom
the promises had been given. God had the world in view, but he aimed to
come to Israel first. So Jesus saidin Matthew 15:24, "I was sent only to the
lost sheepof the house of Israel." But just like there is a clue in Zechariah's
song that God's redemption is more than national, so there is a clue that the
17. beneficiaries of that redemption are more than Israelites. We will see this in a
moment.
That is the way Zechariahbegins his song in verse 68, "The Lord God of
Israelhas visited and redeemed his people." Now in verse 69 he tells us how
this visitation and redemption will happen, "Godhas raisedup a horn of
salvationfor us in the house of his servant, David." This is Jesus not John the
Baptist. John was not of the house of David. Jesus is the horn of salvation.
The Horn of Salvation
This has been an exciting image for me to hold up before my mind's eye this
Christmas: Jesus as the horn of salvation. The kind of horn meant here is not
a musical instrument but the deadly weaponof the wild ox. This is the only
place in the New Testamentwhere Jesus is called a horn, so we must go back
to the Old Testament, no doubt where Zechariah gotthe image, to see what it
means.
Psalm92:9 and 10 gives us a picture of what the horn stoodfor:
For lo, thy enemies, O Lord, for lo, thy enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall
be scattered. But thou hast exalted my horn like that of the wild ox.
The horn is a sign of strength and a means of victory. In Micah 4:13 God says
to Jerusalem, "Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion, for I will make your
horn iron and your hoofs bronze; you shall beatin pieces many peoples."
I used to watch Rawhide on TV when I was a boy and the program always
came on with a stampede of cattle, most with big horns. But I never was very
impressed at the size or strength of the cattle until I went to the Minnesota
State Fair for the first time about six years ago. And it still makes me feel
weak everyyear when I go back and see those prize-winning steer. Their
backs are as high as my head. Their necks are as big as a barrel, and those
two horns! Every time I go past that stallI think, "What if that animal got
angry?" It is not hard to imagine that the horn of the wild ox became for the
18. ancient near easternpeople (who had no cars or tanks or motors) a sign of
tremendous strength and a means of victory in conflict.
Verse 70 says that the coming of this horn of salvationwas prophesied of old.
One of the clearestexamples ofsuch a prophecy is Psalm132:17, where God
says concerning Jerusalem, "There I will make a horn to sprout for David. I
have prepared a lamp for my anointed. His enemies I will clothe with shame."
When a horn sprouts on an ox's head and becomes like iron, then he must be
fearedby all his enemies.
But in the Old Testamentone always finds the conviction that God is the one
who fights for Israel. He is the one who is strong and who gets victory over the
enemies of his people. Therefore, it is not surprising that the only two
instances of the phrase "horn of salvation" in the Old Testamentare
references to God, not man. One is in 2 Samuel 22:3, and the other in Psalm
18:2. Both recordthe same psalm of David after God savedhim from his
enemy Saul. He says, "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my
salvation."
God is his defense (his shield) and his offense (his deadly and powerful horn).
He is a horn of salvationbecause he uses his powerto secure and protecthis
people.
And that brings us back now to Luke 1:69. Jesus is the horn of salvation
because he is a deadly weaponand tremendous powerwhich, according to
verse 71, God uses to save his people from their enemies and all who hate
them. Zechariahmeans primarily; that the Messiahwill one day literally
destroy his enemies and gather his people into his land and rule them in peace.
And indeed, he will when he comes a secondtime. But Zechariah's words
necessarilyimply more than that.
Verses 74 and 75 show that the goalof God's redemption in raising up a horn
of salvationis to "grantthat we, being delivered from the hand of our
enemies, might serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before
him all the days of our life." God's aim in raising a horn of salvationis not
19. merely to liberate an oppressedpeople, but to create a holy and righteous
people who live in no fear because theytrust him.
This means that the redemption spokenof in verse 68 must include
redemption from fear of enemies and from all unrighteousness. And it implies
that ultimately the people spokenofin verse 68 are not merely Jews, but are
any who are not enemies of the Messiah, anywho "serve Godwithout fear in
holiness and righteousness." So eventhough Zechariah is thinking mainly of
the eventual national redemption of believing Israel, yet his own view of
things, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, implies that this visitation and
redemption of God is going to mean profound spiritual transformation and
spiritual battle. And, therefore, to view Jesus as a horn of salvationis to see
him not only as a national liberator but, much more importantly for us now,
as a spiritual conqueror.
If the goalof God's redemption is to be achieved—the gathering of a people
who are fearless and righteous—thenhe must conquer fear and conquer
unrighteousness. And the goodnews of Zechariah's song—the goodnews of
Christmas—is that God has raised up a horn of salvation. Jesus is the great
ox-horn of salvationfor all those who call upon him and trust him.
Our Desperate Need
If someone would have given me a guaranteedsuper-duper mousetrapfor
Christmas lastyear, I would have felt very little appreciation. We never had
any mice in our old house. If someone gave me a guaranteed-to-catch-'em
mousetrap this Christmas, I'd really feelappreciation because now we have
got mice and I can't catch them all. If you offer me a quick ride after service
to the emergencyroom at MetropolitanMedicalCenter, I'll think you are
strange unless I see the gashin my arm or feel the severe pain in my abdomen.
Then I would love you for the offer. If a police car screeches to a stopbeside
me on my way home from church some night and a man hollers for me to get
in, I'll think he is putting me on unless I see the armed gang lurking ahead
around the corner.
20. And so it is in all of life: we do not appreciate gifts that meet no needs or
satisfy no desires. We do not value or love an offer for help unless we know we
are sick or endangeredby some enemy. Vast numbers of people look upon
Jesus and the Christmas story of his coming as a useless mousetrap, a crazy
trip to the emergencyroom, a bothersome pickup by the police, because they
don't know that they have a terminal illness calledunforgiven sin, and they
don't believe in the fearful enemy, Satan. For them, the "horn of salvation" is
a useless toy. For me, it is my only hope of recoveryfrom this deadly disease
of sin that infects my soul and my only protectionfrom Satan, the most
dangerous external enemy.
For there is a real and deadly disease. "Allhave sinned and come short of
God's glory" (Romans 3:23). "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves
and the truth is not in us" (1 John 1:8). "The wages ofsin is death" (Romans
6:23). And there is a real and powerful enemy. "Your adversary, the devil,
prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour" (1 Peter5:8).
"He is the godof this world and blinds the minds of unbelievers to keepthem
from seeing the light of the gospelof the glory of Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:4).
So there is a deadly disease and an awesome enemy. And every one of us will
die from this disease and be devoured by that enemy if there is no horn of
salvationfor us.
But, "blessedbe the Lord Godof Israel, for he has visited and redeemedhis
people, and raisedup a horn of salvationfor us in the house of his servant
David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we
should be savedfrom our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us . . .
And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the MostHigh, for you will go
before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge ofsalvationto his
people in the forgiveness oftheir sins."
These two things make Christmas good news of greatjoy to all who believe. 1
John 3:8, "The reasonthe Sonof God appearedwas to destroy the works of
the devil." Hebrews 9:26, "Christ has appearedonce for all at the end of the
age to put awaysin by the sacrifice ofhimself." Fearand guilt, the two great
spoilers of life, have been taken awaybecause Satanhas been disarmed and
sin has been forgiven. Hebrews 2:14–15 says, "Christtook on a human nature
21. that through death he might destroy him who has the powerof death, that is,
the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subjectto
lifelong bondage." And through that same death he paid the debt for our sin,
so that if we turn and follow him in faith, we are freed from all our guilt.
"Blessedbe the Lord God of Israel who has visited and redeemedhis people
by raising up a horn of salvationfor us . . . that we, being delivered from our
enemies, might serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before
him all the days of our life."
Satanmay be a roaring lion seeking someoneto devour, but none of those who
take refuge in Christ, the horn of our salvation, can he destroy. If I were an
artist, I would paint for my home a specialChristmas painting this year and
hang it on the wall near the mangerscene. It would be one of those big oil
canvasses. The scene would be of a distant hill at dawn. The sun is about to
rise behind the hill and the rays shootup and out of the picture. And all alone,
silhouetted on the hill in the center of the picture, very dark, is a magnificent
wild ox standing with his back sevenfeet tall and the crownof his head nine
feet tall. On both sides of his head there is a horn curving out and up six feet
long and twelve inches thick at the base. He stands there sovereignand serene,
facing the southern sky with his massive neck slightly cocked, andimpaled at
the end of his right horn hangs a huge lion, dead.
Question:"What is the horn of salvation?"
Answer: The horn of salvationis mentioned severaltimes in the Bible, but
what does this expressionmean? What does salvation have to do with a horn?
In the Old Testament, the word horn signifies many things. Of course, one
usage of horn was to refer to a pointed bony structure growing out of an
animal’s head (Genesis 22:13). Animal horns, used for fighting, protection,
22. and securing dominance, became symbols of strength, power, and victory.
Often, Scripture’s mention of a “horn” is as a literary symbol representing
potency and power.
For example, in Daniel7:7 and 24, the ten horns of Daniel’s fourth beast
representten kings. In Psalm 75:10, Godsays, “I will cut off the horns of all
the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.” In other words,
the righteous will prevail, no matter how strong the wickedseemto be. In
Jeremiah48:25, “Moab’s horn is cut off” means that the strength of Moab is
gone. The four horns in Zechariah 1:18–19 representthe powerful nations
that attackedand scatteredIsrael.
Animal horns were also used as receptaclesfor oil (1 Samuel 16:1) or as a
shofar trumpet (Joshua 6:5). The prayer in Psalm92:10 contains both a
reference to oil and a figurative use of horn: “You have exaltedmy horn like
that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured on me.”
In 1 Samuel 2:1 Hannah prays, “In the Lord, my horn is lifted high,”
indicating the strength that will come from her having a child. In Luke 1:69
Zechariah praises Godthat “He has raisedup a horn of salvationfor us in the
house of his servant David.” In this case, the “horn of salvation” is a reference
to Jesus Christ, the powerful deliverer and king who was soonto be born.
Another significant instance of the word horn in the Old Testamentis in
reference to the protrusion at eachcorner of the altar (Exodus 27:2). In
worship, the horns of the altar were dabbed with blood to purify them and
make atonement for sin (Leviticus 8:15; 4:6). The horns of the altar speak of
the powerof God’s salvation. That part of the altar also became a place of
refuge and sanctuary for a fugitive (1 Kings 1:50).
23. We often see the horn in Scripture as a symbol of salvation. Psalm18:2 says,
“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock,
in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my
stronghold.” In the New Testament, Jesus is the horn of salvation(Luke 1:68–
69). Thus, a title applied to Yahweh is also applied to Jesus;they are both
called“the horn of salvation.” The very name Jesus means “The Lord Is
Salvation.” The salvationJesus offers is strong, triumphant, and powerful.
Just like the horns on the altar offeredrefuge and atonement, Jesus offers
clemencyand cleansing through His death on the cross. Howeverstrong our
spiritual foe, the horn of our salvationis strongerstill.

What Does Luke 1:69 Mean? ►
And has raisedup a horn of salvationfor us In the house of David His
servant--
Luke 1:69(NASB)
Verse Thoughts
Salvationis from the Lord and God has raisedup a horn of Salvation. A horn
in scripture denotes strengthand authority, might and power and God has
raisedup a horn of salvationfor us – a strong and mighty Saviour, from the
house and lineage of Israel’s king David - Who was to have the authority and
powerof the Almighty God.
24. Israelhad been waiting for 400 silent years – but slowly and secretlythe plans
and purposes of God were unfolding and just as the bright sunshine of a
glorious day begins with a tiny pin-point of light, whose tendrilled rays
gradually increase into a burst of silver sunrise, on the easternhorizon -
before bursting into the sky to shine its light and warmth on the cold, dark
dying earth – so also is the wonderful truth of God’s salvationfor human-
kind. Hidden secretlyin the womb of a young virgin was God’s horn of
Salvation- God’s only begottenfirstborn Son, Who had been promised so
long ago. At lastthe MessiahofIsraelwas coming into the world to shine His
light on the people that walkedin darkness and to proclaim salvationfor
whoseverwill.
The Messiahhad been promised to Israel – for God had pledged that
Salvationwas to come through the people of Israel. Salvationis from the Lord
and canonly come through believing on the death and resurrectionits Jewish-
born Messiah. Godhad promised Abraham that through him - all the families
of the earth would be blessed - and Christ was of that Seedof Abraham,
through whom all the world would be blessed. Godhad also promised David
that He would build him a house – and one of his descendants would be born
as Messiahof Israel – the horn of Salvation– the one and only Saviour of the
whole world.
And 2000 years ago, Godfulfilled his promise to raise up a horn of salvation
for us, in the house of David His servant. Jesus Christ was that Salvationand
He came to the people who walkedin darkness and as a light to lighten the
gentiles. But He was despisedand rejectedof men and returned to His
heavenly home in glory…fora time. But the day is coming when He will
return as the Son of righteousness with healing on His wings - for all who trust
in Christ as their horn of Salvation. And there will be no night there--no need
for lamps or sun--for the Lord God will shine upon them.
My Prayer
25. Father thank You for sending Jesus to be the horn of my Salvation. Thank
You that He savedme simply because Itrusted in Him as Saviour – praise
Your name for ever, AMEN.

Jesus, the Horn of Salvationby SarahBarry (Lk 1:67-79)
Jesus, the Horn of Salvation
Luke 1:67-79
Key Verses:1:68,69
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has
redeemedhis people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house
of his servant David.”
Merry Christmas! At Jesus’birth, the angels sang, “Gloryto God and peace to
men.”Rome ruled the westernworld under the banner, “PaxRomana.”But
there was no real peace. The world needed a Saviorwho was mighty to save
and strong to deliver. God sent him, Jesus, the Horn of Salvation. Today we
want to think about the song of Zechariah, which helped prepare for that first
Christmas. And we want to prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus
at our Christmas worship service next Sunday. Zechariahintroduced the
Horn of Salvation. He and his wife were among the people who were waiting
for the coming of the Savior. God blessedtheir family with a miracle baby.
Every new baby is a miracle. But when little John the Baptistwas born to the
old priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth, it was a specialmiracle.
Zechariah had prayed for a son, but he couldn’t believe God’s word of
promise, so God gave him ten months of silence to think about it. During that
time he meditated on the word of God and on the MessiahwhomGod was
26. sending. He repented of his unbelief. He lookedback, to God’s promises of
long ago through the prophets. He lookedforwardto the redemptive work
God would do through his son and through the Messiah. He lookedatthe
present–the tiny baby in his arms. He was filled with the Holy Spirit. He sang
about God’s greatwork of salvation: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come and has redeemedhis people.”
Part 1: “he has come and has redeemed his people.”(67-68)First, Godhas
come. He came in the flesh to make his dwelling among us. Jesus the Messiah
is God incarnate. Second, “he has redeemedhis people.”Redemptionis a term
used in the slave market, or in a pawn shop. In a pawn shop, It means to buy
something back;in the slave market it means to pay the price and purchase
freedom for a slave.
Once a little boy made a boat, lovingly out of a block of wood. He attached a
small sail and brought it down to a gentle streamto see it float. Suddenly, it
was sweptawayin the current and carriedout to the ocean. The little boy was
very sorry to lose his boat. Then one day he was walking by a pawn shop and
saw it in the window, with an expensive price tag on it. He had no money. So
he took odd jobs and workedhard and bought the boat back. He said, “Little
boat, you are twice mine. I made you and I bought you.”Godsays the same
thing to Israel and to us. “I made you and I bought you. You are mine.”
When the Israelites were groaning in slavery in Egypt, God sent them a
message:“I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the
Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeemyou
with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as
my ownpeople and I will be your God.”(Ex6:6) Slaves cannotredeem
themselves. They need a redeemer. God himself broke the iron grip of
Pharaohby 10 mighty acts of judgement. And he brought the slaves out of
bondage.
We become slaves ofsin when we do not honor God as God and do not thank
him. (Ro 1:19-21)When we do not acceptGod’s sovereigntyand love we
become slaves ofour sinful nature, and thus slaves of the devil. We become
proud and ungrateful, rebellious and bitter. Only the blood of Jesus can
27. purchase our pardon and setus free. Paul wrote:“In him we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness ofsins...”(Eph1:7) and Peterwrote: “For
you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you
were redeemedfrom the empty wayof life handed down to you from your
forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without
blemish...”Zechariahpraisedthe God of Israelwho redeemedhis people. He
redeems us by the horn of salvation, Jesus and by the rising sun, Jesus.
Part 2: The horn of salvation (69-75).How has Godcome and redeemedhis
people? Verse 69 says, “he has raised up a horn of salvationfor us in the
house of his servant David...”Whatis the meaning of “horn”? I thought that it
might be a horn like Tim Fitch or David Choi blow. But apparently it refers to
the horn of a bull or an ox or a goatthat the animal uses as a weapon. The
footnote says that “horn”symbolizes strength. Psalm 92:10 says, “You have
exalted my horn like that of a wild ox...my eyes have seenthe defeatof my
adversaries...”InRevelation12, the devil is described as having sevenheads
and ten horns. This means that he is very smart and very powerful. He is the
one who leads the whole world astray. He is calledthe accuser, for he accuses
God’s people endlessly. Accusers and complainers are in league with the devil.
We must know that we cannot defeatthe devil by our own strength. But the
horn of salvation, Jesus, is strongerthan the ten horns of the devil. He defeats
the devil.
Some people have been pierced by Satan’s horns. Doubt is surely one of his
horns. Satantries to make God’s people doubt God’s love. He tries to make us
doubt God’s absolute word, doubt our salvation, doubt God’s work in our
lives. Jesus the horn of salvationcan defeatthe devil’s doubt. Another of
Satan’s horns is fear. Hebrews 2:14 says that the devil holds us in slavery by
our fearof death. He pierces us with the horn of fear. We fear failure; we fear
sickness;we fearthe future. We fear rejection. We are even afraid to invite
someone to the Christmas worship service. Jesuscandefeatthe horn of fear.
Satanpierces us with the horn of despair. We give in to our old bad habits of
lust or alcoholor drugs or pornography or laziness or eating too much, and
we give up in despair. It is Satan’s horn. When we depend on ourselves, we
fail time after time. Despaircomes from the root of pride in our hearts which
28. says, “I think I can run my own life and do my own thing without God’s
help.”Jesus the horn of salvation defeats despairwhen we callon him for help.
Satansometimes pierces us with the horn of bitterness. We become bitter and
feel like victims because ofsomething someone says ordoes to us. The horn of
salvationJesus takes away bitterness and heals our hearts.
A beautiful woman allowedSatanto take hold of her rebellious spirit and
push her into an immoral act. She was pierced by Satan’s horn and could not
be free from slavery to an immoral relationship, even after she married. She
needs to come to the horn of salvation, Jesus and surrender to him. A young
man loved his wife, but when she was unfaithful to him he was pierced by
Satan’s horn. He could not overcome sorrow and bitterness or the grip of
Satanon his life. He needs to call on the horn of salvation Jesus and receive
his help.
A sincere young man, protectedfrom evil influences all his life, saw the ugly
reality of death when his brother killed himself. This young man blamed God
and God’s servants, not realizing that his enemy was the devil. So he became
angry and bitter and finally his wife became a depressionpatient. He needs
Jesus the horn of salvation. A loving mother lost her only sonto cancer. She
acceptedGod’s sovereigntyand love and continued to serve God with all her
heart. But deep in her heart was Satan’s piercing. She needs the healing that
only Jesus the horn of salvationcan give.
One young man really liked a girl. But when she committed adultery with a
married man, he was deeply hurt and attempted suicide. But he could not die
because ofthe fear of death. From that time on, he could not love girls,
concluding that all women were his enemies. He was deeply impaled by Satan.
At a UBF Bible conference,he heard Jesus’prayeronthe cross, “Father,
forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”(Lk 23:34) By the
powerof the Horn of SalvationJesus he forgave his girlfriend and even
himself. For the first time in his life, he tastedtrue peace from God. He
experiencedthat the horn of salvationis mightier than the horn of Satan.
Jesus the horn of salvationcan rescue wounded, powerlessyoung people and
raise them as powerful servants of God. Praise Jesus who is the horn of
salvationfor everybody.
29. The horn of salvationsaves us from all our enemies. Zechariahprophesies
about enemies two times: “salvationfrom our enemies and from the hand of
all who hate us”(71). and “to rescue us from the hand of our enemies...”(74).
He saves us from enemies of doubt, fear, depression, despair, bitterness and
from all our wounds. But our real enemy is Satan. He pierces whoeverhas an
unprotected heart. One young single mother of five could become bitter and
develop a victim’s mentality, but the horn of salvation has protected her and
she is full of faith and joy. We need the shield of faith and the helmet of
salvationand the breastplate of righteousness andthe swordof the Spirit.
Mostof all, we need the horn of salvationto do battle for us. He is stronger
than the ten horns of the devil. He defeats the devil and the power of sin by his
death on the cross and by his glorious resurrection.
Look at verses 70-73. Zechariahsaw the horn of salvationin the context of
God’s history. He said, “[God]has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the
house of his servant David, as he saidthrough his holy prophets of long
ago.”(72)Godpromised to send the Messiahthrough David’s line. (Isa 9:6,7;
11:1) God swore an oath to Abraham (73). After Abraham had offered Isaac,
God swore by himself that Abraham’s descendants would possessthe cities of
their enemies and that through Abraham’s offspring all nations on earth
would be blessed. This promise was fulfilled by Jesus the Messiah. Our God
remembers his covenant. He sent the horn of salvation to rescue us from our
enemy Satanand to enable us to serve God without fear, in holiness and
righteousness before him all our days”(74-75). (No retirement.) Our God is
faithful. What a blessing it is to serve God without fear. We are a holy nation
people because we are clothedin the righteousness ofChrist, our horn of
salvation. We are set free from slavery so that we canserve our God without
fear, in holiness and righteousness allour days.
Part 3: “And you my child...”(76-77)Let’s readverses 76 and 77. “And you,
my child, will be called a prophet of the MostHigh; for you will go on before
the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of
salvationthrough the forgiveness oftheir sins...”Zechariahfinally turned his
attention to the little baby boy in his arms. His son, John would be a prophet.
He would prepare the way for the Lord. He would not be the Messiah. He
would be the forerunner of the Messiah. How would John prepare the way?
30. First, by exposing the sin problem of all people. John would preach a baptism
of repentance for the forgiveness ofsins. People’s hearts would be prepared
for the coming of the Savior. Second, he would introduce Jesus, the Messiah,
the Lamb of God who takes awaythe sin of the world. May we also prepare
our hearts to come and worship Jesus at our Christmas worship service next
Sunday. Let us prepare by repenting of sin and welcoming Jesus.
Part 4: “The rising sun will come to us from heaven...”(78-79)Readverses 78-
79, “because ofthe tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will
come to us from heavento shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow
of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”Godcouldcrush us for our
sins and our rebellion againsthim, but in his tender mercy God forgives our
sins. (78) Because ofGod’s tender mercy, the rising sun which comes to us
from heaven shines his light into our darkness. People in slavery to sin and
Satanlive in darkness and in the shadow of death. It is the darkness of sin, the
darkness of death, the darkness of depression;the darkness of
meaninglessness.People living in darkness have no peace. The rising sun
shines on us from heaven to guide our feet into the path of peace.
The worstkind of darkness is the darkness of ignorance, especiallywilful and
deliberate ignorance that denies the truth. Romans 1:18 says that men
suppress the truth by their wickedness.Jesus said:“...Light has come into the
world, but men loved darkness insteadof light because their deeds were evil.
Everyone who does evil hates the light...But whoeverlives by the truth comes
into the light...”God’s word is truth. The Bible is a lamp to our feetand a light
for our path. (Ps 119:105)Formany centuries godless people have attacked
the truthfulness and authority of the Bible. They have always failed. They
attack the Bible because they don’t want to acceptGod’s sovereignty. They
want to believe that everything is relative, including moral standards. Those
who read the Bible and seek to live by it, find that God’s word is indeed truth
and that God’s light shines in our hearts. It dispels ignorance and leads us in
the path of peace.
Jesus the rising sun is the true light who gives light to every man. He gives us
this invitation, “I am the light of the world. Whoeverfollows me will never
walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(Jn 8:12) When we accepthis
31. invitation he guides our feet into the path of peace. (79)There can be no peace
in the Middle Eastuntil Jesus the Horn of Salvation, Jesus the Rising Sun
comes into every heart. Jesus made peace whenhe took our sins upon himself
and restoredour relationship with our CreatorGod. At his birth, the angels
sang, “Gloryto God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his
favor rests.”Whenwe accepthis grace and lay our burden of sin on him we
have peace. Godhas come and has redeemed his people by raising up Jesus
the horn of salvation. He has redeemedus by sending Jesus the rising sun to
shine on people living in darkness and in the shadow of death. He has
redeemedus so that we can walk in the path of peace and serve God without
fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
What is the Horn of Salvation? – Remember the Horn!
June 19, 2014 By JeanWise
In my morning devotionals, I have been slowlysavoring the psalms. This
morning I enjoyed the taste of Psalm18 until I stumbled at the phrase “the
horn of salvation.” mmm, I wonderwhat that means? I have learned if a word
or phrase tickles my spirit to laugh and learn its message.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in
whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm18: 2 (NIV)
I found that expressionin two other locations in my NIV Study Bible.
My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my
salvation.
2 Samuel 22:3
He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.
32. Luke 1:69
The horn of salvationdescribes God in the Old Testamentand Jesus in the
New. The Luke reading is where Zechariah is praising God as our Redeemer
and Savior. All the verses tell us of an important attribute of God.
Severalcommentaries openedthe meaning of this phrase. I thought that it
might be a horn like in a trumpet, but most writers sayit refers to the horn of
a bull or an ox or a goatthat the animal uses as a mean of defense or as a
weapon. Horn symbolizes strength and protection, as this is the source of
strength for many animals.
In the Bible the horns from animals was used as a trumpet blown to show
victory in battle. In this light, God is our song of strength, protection and
victory.
In reading about horns, I remembered a scene in C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe. Lucy is given a horn and told,
“When you put this horn to your lips; and blow it, then, wherever you are, I
think help of some kind will come to you.”
Throughout the story when all seemedlost, they remembered the horn.
Goodreminder for us too: Remember the horn.
The Horn of Salvation.
The Strength and Protectorwho will never let us down.
Remember the horn!

I think my favorite image is when God sYs “He will coverus with His wings.”
When I was young , I heard a story abiut a mother hen on her nest that I will
never forget. ( you probably know it) There was a fire in the barn and mother
hen was on her nest. Her chicks were just beginning to hatch and she knew
there was no way they would have the strength to follow her to safety. Their
only hope was for her to protect them as long as she could and hope for the
fire to be put out. She lay her body over the egfs and chicks and extended her
wings. When the fire was over, the farmer was surveying the damage and
fiund the mother hen still in her box, not having survived the fire.
“Stupid chicken” , the farmer said and pushed the hen over with his foot. To
his amazement, a nest full of fluffy yellow chicks beganto chirp with their
first glimpse of sunlight. The farmer couldnt believe his eyes and wept
instantly realizing the sacrifice the mother had made.
When I heard this story, I couldnt miss how the Lord extends His saving love
over me, to the point of sacrificing His life. I think of the mercy seatwith the
cheribum extending their wings over the sacrificialblood…. and the empty
tomb with the angels watching where He had been laid. …. and yet He
promises to even cover me with His wings…. whom shall I fear?

I love that story!. I remember a former pastorpreaching on a hen being an
odd image of God yet when he shared this story, it become a powerful one and
one of my favorites. I hadn’t remember it for quite a while so thank you for
stirring that image up for me. Amazing God we have!! Hope you have a
wonderful week full of blessings!

The lamb. That there could be so much powerin such a meek animal is just so
representative of the upside down kingdom of God. I remember being at a
petting zoo and encountering a sheepand seeing how meek they really are. If
you walk toward one it simply backs up. It doesn’t seemscared, just
uninterested in conflict. It is the most marvellous thing. They are fairly large
animals but completelywithout offense.

A Horn of Salvation
In category:Devotional
35. How shall we describe God? With what words should we extol His mighty
works? At the birth of John the Baptist, his father Zechariah said, “Praise be
to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemedhis
people. He has raised up a horn of salvationfor us in the house of his servant
David” (Luke 1:68-69 NIV)
Of all the attributes of God, Zechariahchose to highlight the fact that God is
our Redeemerand Savior. Perhaps Zechariah had Psalm18 in mind where
King David wrote, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my
God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my
salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm18:2 NIV)
The Jewishpeople used the word “horn” as a metaphor for power. When
Zechariah saidthat God “has raised up a horn of salvation for us” he meant
that God would use His incomparable power in order to save us. There is no
powerwhich can prevent God from saving us.
How did God do it? The Apostle Paul writes, “You see, at just the right time,
when we were still powerless, Christdied for the ungodly. Very rarely will
anyone die for a righteous man, though for a goodman someone might
possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While
we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8 NIV)
God used His powerto rescue and save us who had no powerto save ourselves
from the consequences ofsin. And, God’s power is still available to the
followers of Christ so that we canlive godly lives. How greatis that power?
“...Thatpoweris like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in
Christ when he raisedhim from the dead and seatedhim at his right hand in
the heavenly realms,” (Ephesians 1:19-20 NIV)
Someday, the powerwhich saves us from spiritual death will save us from
physical death. The same powerwhich raisedChrist from the dead will raise
His followers as well. “...The body that is sownis perishable, it is raised
imperishable; it is sownin dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sownin
weakness,it is raised in power; it is sowna natural body, it is raiseda
spiritual body...” (1 Corinthians 15:42-44 NIV)
36. Like Zechariah, let us praise God for the “horn of salvation” He has raisedfor
us!

The Horn of Salvation

by Samuel Gill
39. “He has raised up a horn of salvationfor us in the house of his servant
David.”
(Luke 1:69)
Nowadays everybodyis busy preparing for Christmas, to celebrate the
birthday of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. People prepare good food, and
buy new clothes for Christmas. They go to church. Some people, who do not
show their face in church throughout the year, on this greatday go to show
their presence in the church. It is goodand essentialto go to church on
Christmas. However, the most important thing is to getacquainted with the
importance and the person of the Savior. He is the One who is the Creator
and became a creature.
In the Gospelof Luke we read that Zechariah was given the goodnews that he
would have a son. When he doubted, he became dumb (mute). But after the
birth of his son he was able againto speak (Luke 1:13, 18-20, 64).
At this time he was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, “He has raised
up a horn of salvationfor us in the house of his servant David” (Luke 1:69).
Here the horn is used as a metaphor.
In Luke chapter1, there is the mention of redemption, salvation,
righteousness, the forgiveness ofsins, darkness, and the shadow of death (see
verses, 68-70,75, 77, 79). In this situation the Lord raised up a horn of
salvationfor us in the house of his servant David. John, the son of Zechariah,
was the forerunner of the Lord Jesus Christ. He preached, “Repent! For the
kingdom of heaven is near” (Matthew 3:2). He further said, “…whose sandals
I am not fit to carry” (Matthew 3:11)
In olden times oil was kept in a horn for purposes of anointing.
“Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacredtent and anointed
Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet and all the people shouted, “Long
live King Solomon” (1 Kings 1:39).
“Overlaythe top and all the sides and the horns with pure gold, and make a
gold molding around it” (Exodus 30:3).
40. “Take some ofthe bull’s blood and put it on the horns of the altar with your
fingers”
(Exodus 29:12).
In the Hebrew culture the horn was the symbol of strength. “In the Lord my
horn is lifted high” (1 Samuel 2:1).
“… Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar.
Then Solomonwas told, ‘Adonijah is afraid of King Solomonand is clinging
to the horns of the altar’… then king Solomonsent men and they brought him
down from the altar…. And Solomonsaid, go to your home” (1 Kings 1:50-
53).
This was the fulfillment of prophecy, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and
my deliverer; my Godis my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the
horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my Savior” (2
Samuel 22:3).
The Psalmistalso writes, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my
deliverer. My Godis my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the
horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm18:2).
“Here I will make a horn grow for David” (Psalm132:17).
“All the Scripture is God breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16).
“But men spoke from God as they were carriedalong by the Holy Spirit” (2
Peter1:21).
Whateverwas written in the past and fulfilled, in the same way we can see the
future on the basis of the present.
1. THE SAVIOR’S HONOR:Raising the horn is a sign of honor. This is a
picture of the Savior’s honor:
“Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will
reign on David’s throne, and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the
Lord almighty will accomplishthis” (Isaiah 9:7).
41. “Therefore Godexaltedhim to the highest place and gave him the name that
is above every name, that at the name of Jesus everyknee should bow, in
heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11)
2. THE SAVIOR’S BEAUTY: Beautiful horns add to the beauty of an
animal. Our Savior is very beautiful because ofhis character, miracles, and
compassion. The greatestthing is this, that he joyfully accepteddeath on the
Cross that through his death we may have life eternal. He suffered that we
may have joy. He went through all this pain that we may have peace and
comfort. He experiencedthe shame on the Cross so that through his shame we
may be honored before the Father. This is His everlasting beauty.
“My lover is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among ten thousand” (Song of
Songs 5:10).
Stephen, the first martyr of the church, saw the beauty of his Savior. He was
so devoted in his love for the Saviorthat he presentedhis life unto Him (Acts
7:59). And the beauty of his Saviorwas so deep in the heart, mind, soul and
spirit of the Apostle Paul, that he sethis eyes on the face of death and declared
his faith with great boldness before the king and witnessedaboutthe Savior.
Becausehe saw the beauty of the Savior, he was ready to die. He said,
“Forme to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
Peterobservedthe beauty and the glory of the Savior,
“… (he) was transfigured before them, his face shone like the sun, and his
clothes became as white as the light.” (Matthew 17:2)
The first century Christians offered their lives because they personally
experiencedthe beauty of the Savior. The blood of the martyrs is the seedfor
the Church. This is still occurring and will continue until Jesus comes back.
3. THE SAVIOR’S POWER:The absolute power and strength of an
animal is situated in his horns. Our Savior owns greatpower.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).
42. The Saviorhas powerover Satan, sickness anddeath. All the evil powers run
awayin the mighty name of Jesus. World organizations come and go. The
Church is a divine institution which was establishedby the Savior and will
never come to an end. The Savior manifests His powerthrough the Church.
“The gates ofHades will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18).
4. THE SAVIOR AS A REFUGE:By holding onto the horns of the altar, a
life was spared. This was a place of refuge.
“But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the
altar. Then Solomonwas told, “Adonijah is afraid of King Solomonand is
clinging to the horns of the altar… king Solomonsent men and they brought
him down from the altar…. And Solomonsaid, ‘Go to your home’” (1 Kings
1:50-53).
For us, the Lord Jesus Christ is the place of protection and refuge. Anyone
who comes to Him is safe. He gives shelterto his people. Nobody can be
snatchedawayfrom Him. He protects, delivers, and saves us from
destruction, sin, death and Satan.
“…and you are to give him the name Jesus, becausehe will save his people
from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
5. THE SAVIOR AS AVENGER:“He raised the horn of salvation for us.”
The animal uses his horn to take revenge. The horn is a terrible weapon. With
this weaponan animal defends himself as welltakes revenge by attacking his
enemy.
Our Saviorcame into this world and was placed in a manger some 2000 years
ago. He was the creator, sustainerand provider of the whole universe.
“There was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7).
“Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Sonof man has
no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:21).
43. He did not have His own donkey to ride, boat to travel in, house to live in or
even a grave in which to be buried. He gave his life to save mankind from sin
and death. He died, was buried; He was raisedfrom the dead. He ascendedto
heaven, and He will come back to this earth to judge. He will throw the evil
ones into the lake of fire and sulpher. This is His revenge and this will be the
punishment for sinners, while the righteous will live with Him for evermore.
“BeholdI am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone
according to what he has done” (Revelation22:12)
“He has raised up a horn of salvationfor us in the house of his servant
David.” Luke 1:69
We have seenthe Savior’s honor, beauty and power. He is our refuge and our
avenger. He is coming soonto take revenge on the evil ones. Have you
receivedsalvationthrough this Savior? If your response is positive, then you
must praise God. And if your answeris negative then this is a very precious
time for you, that at Christmas you get deliverance and forgiveness ofyour
sins. Through this Savior you will receive eternal life. This is the true purpose
of Christmas.
THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IS THE HORN OF SALVATION FOR US
We wish you a blessedbirthday of the Savior and all His blessings throughout
the coming year.

What Is the “Horn of Salvation” in the Bible?
In his “Expositionof the Bible,” John Gill illustrated the horn as being the
force used to push, scatter, and destroy Israel’s enemies and save them from
harm. In Psalms 18:2, the power of the horn is describedas “[t]he Lord is my
rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will
trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”

50. What does the horn of salvationmean?
In his “Expositionof the Bible,” John Gill illustrated the horn as being the
force used to push, scatter, and destroy Israel’s enemies and save them from
harm.
In Psalms 18:2, the power of the horn is describedas “[t]he Lord is my rock,
and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
Through this Scripture, we are able to see God’s stability and strength to
protect:
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people
and redeemedthem. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house
of his servant David” (Luke 1:68-69).
In order to understand the early significance of the “horn,” it is helpful to
study its usage in the Old Testamentsacrificialceremonies.
Horns in Old TestamentCeremonies
Horns in the Ark of the Covenant
In Exodus 27:2, we find the instructions for building of the altar in the temple:
“And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns
shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass.”
The horns were used to indicate the corners of the altar. The horns and the
altar were to be made of the same wood. The brass overlaywas required so
that the horn could endure the fire and preserve the woodfrom destruction.
51. Our bodies are representedby the wood, and Christ’s blood is the brass
overlay, which brightens and protects us from divine wrath.
Horns as God’s MultifacetedPower
The “Horn” is a symbol reflective of our Lord’s multifaceted powers. Godhas
and will conquer every evil whether the opposition is spiritual or physical. He
establishedthe law for His people, which allowedman to realize his sinful
nature. He sent forth this Son who provided the perfect sacrifice by being
born of a virgin. This was of utmost importance, as sin was not imputed on
Him.
Throughout his 33.3 years oflife, he was sinless despite being tempted in every
way as man is today. His final act as a physical man was freely offering
himself to death. He then conquered physical death by way of His resurrection
which provided the path of our spiritual salvation.
The horn is representative of this perfectsacrifice. Our Lord also has the
powerto govern, protect, and preserve his believers on a present basis. His
spirit leads, guides, and directs us when we allow His presence.
The “horn” also promises a future protection of all believers. When Christ
returns to the earth for all believers, we will be ultimately delivered from the
presence ofall evil. The flesh of the believer will no longer be tempted by any
of the things, princes, or principalities of this Earth.
In 1 Samuel 2:10, these powers are eloquently setout by saying, “[t]he
adversaries ofthe Lord shall be broken to pieces;out of heavenshall be
thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall
give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
52. This scripture notes both the existence ofevil and the omnipresence of God.
The supremacy of His strength results in a great proclamationfrom his
believers who testify of the victory through his power.
Horns in Prophecy: Daniel and Revelation
The prophet Danielin 7:24 proclaims, “[a]nd the ten horns out of this
kingdom are ten kings that shall arise:and anothershall rise after them; and
he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.”
The “horns” in this instance are symbolic of the powers createdby the
formation of nations following the division of the Roman Empire. These
nations are the “ten toes” seenby Nebuchadnezzar in the secondchapterof
Daniel.
The book of Revelationin 17:12, also mentions the prophetic illustration as
well, by stating, “[a]nd the ten horns which thou sawestare ten kings which
have receivedno kingdom as yet: but receive poweras kings one hour with
the beast;and their powershall be of one hour.”
Notice these horns are missing crowns as the beasthas yet to be revealedwith
which they were to reign. The reign of the beastis to be establishedquickly
but will likewise be short lived as referred by John in his usage of “one hour
with the beast” and “their power shall be of one hour.”
The “horn of salvation” from Jesus Christ reflects an eternal and everlasting
reign. His redemption results in salvation of souls in the present state and will
ultimately result in the rapture and transformation of the physical body as
well. Jesus conqueredboth death and the grave by the crucifixion and
resurrection.
After the tribulation, the temptation and presence of sin will be likewise
eliminated by the captivity of Satan. He will have conquered sin, the law,
53. depravity of man, and Satan. For these victories and the anticipation thereof,
we who place our faith in Jesus Christ are granted “The Horn of Salvation.”
Horns as Trumpets
In Joshua 6:4, the sevenpriests who carriedthe Ark of the Covenant around
the city were required to “bearbefore the ark seventrumpets of rams’ horns:
and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seventimes, and the priests shall
blow with the trumpets.”
Some commentators refer to these instruments made of reamed out ram’s
horns as “jubilee trumpets.” These trumpets were used to remind the
Israelites to remember and keepthe law.
David, in Psalms 18:2 could not hide his excitement found in the protection
and provision of his God. Once we fully comprehend the greatness and
perfection of a believer’s salvation, we are unable to cease praising our Lord.
We are to sound and warn a lost and dying world by resonating our “Horn of
Salvation.”

The Horn of My Salvation
May 7, 2010 by Gaylyn Williams
God’s Name of the Day: The Horn of My Salvation
Psalm18:2—The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my Godis my rock, in whom I take refuge.
54. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Some things you can do today with God’s name:
The horn in Hebrew is a sign of strength and a means of victory. In Micah
4:13 God says to Jerusalem, “Rise andthresh, O Daughterof Zion, for I will
give you horns of iron; I will give you hoofs of bronze and you will break to
pieces many nations…” Our God is powerful. He is our offensive weapon. In
this verse, Godis both our defense (shield) and our offense (our deadly and
powerful horn).
Think about how your salvationtoday is as strong as the One who provides
it—the Creatorof the Universe Himself. Could anything or anyone provide
more security than Him?
In Luke 1:69, Jesus is called the Horn of Salvation. Think about how Jesus is
your Horn.
Try to say Psalm18:2 without looking at it today. It’s ok if you need to look at
it.
Your Scripture passage to read today is Psalms 13-16.

Horn of Salvation

He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David –
Luke 1:69
Jesus as the horn of salvation. The kind of horn meant here is not a musical
instrument but the deadly weaponof the wild ox. This is the only place in the
New Testamentwhere Jesus is called a horn, so we must go back to the Old
55. Testament, where no doubt Zechariahgot the image for his song in the verse
above, to see what it means.
Psalm92:9-10 gives us a picture of what the horn stood for: “Forlo, thy
enemies, O Lord, for lo, thy enemies shall perish; all evildoers shall be
scattered. But thou hast exaltedmy horn like that of the wild ox.”
The horn is a sign of strength and a means of victory. In Micah 4:13 God says
to Jerusalem, “Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion, for I will make your
horn iron and your hoofs bronze; you shall beatin pieces many peoples.”
Jesus is a horn of salvationbecause he uses his powerto secure and protect his
people. Jesus is the horn of salvation because he is a deadly weaponand
tremendous power which, according to verse 71, Goduses to save his people
from their enemies.
This is the goodnews of Zechariah’s song, God has raised up a horn of
salvation. Jesus is the greathorn of salvation for all those who callupon him
and trust him. https://www.jtdyer.com/horn-of-salvation/

The theme of the “horn of salvation” has important Old TestamentBiblical-
Theologicalimplications, yet, before we delve back into the Old Testament
history of this language, it is important that we setthe contextof the passage
and make severalobservations:
Note that this statementis part of the prophesy of Zechariah at his son,
John’s, birth. It is prophetic in its scope, but note the use of the pasttense
with the verb “raised.” This is what is called the “prophetic past,” and it is a
common element in Hebrew prophesy. Rather than speak ofwhat God will
do in the future tense (which the prophets do as well), the prophets speak of
what God will do in the future but use past tense verbs to communicate the
absolute nature of this event coming to pass. In other words, the prophet is
saying that we canbe so sure that God will fulfill this event that we can speak
as if it has already takenplace even though it is yet to take place. Such
language is always used with prophesies that are unconditional and
irrevocable. Here, Zechariah is prophesying about the reality of God having
