At Melewi's first ever workshop event in Manila, this talk and workshop focuses on the crucial need for a designer to know about business and revenue models when designing a product. Here we dive a little into understanding the business, revenue, users and their purchasing mindsets, as well as how that influences your product goals. We also cover ways to design for these purchasing mindsets and product goals, examining quick case studies on Amazon and Slack. --- MELEWI - UX Design & Validating Your Startup Mar 19 2016 at 47 East, Manila by Melissa Ng (@thedesignnomad) Founder of Melewi www.melewi.net

Is Design Thinking important? We think it is - it’s one of our 8 building blocks for digital transformation. But what it is it, and why? In the run up to the Global Legal Hackathon, we thought we’d distil our workshop slides and ideas with an associated blog post to explain it. Let’s set the scene with five quotes from experts and artists you will recognise explaining what design really is: "The ultimate defense against complexity” - David Gelernter, Professor of Computer Science, Yale "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” - Leonardo da Vinci "Design is a way of changing life and influencing the future” - Sir Ernest Hall. Pianist, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist “Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer - that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” - Steve Jobs “Design-thinking firms stand apart in their willingness to engage in the task of continuously redesigning their business… to create advances in both innovation and efficiency - the combination that produces the most powerful competitive edge.” - Roger Martin, author of the Design of Business

“They have no idea how to work with a real design team.” We’ve all heard or said something like that about people on our product teams, especially developers. While that’s a natural response to a breakdown in communication or a road bump during implementation, over time it can create an “Us vs. Them” mentality that does more harm than good. So how do we avoid scratching the itch. How do we keep avoiding giving in to the cynicism? As a design leader, how do you balance your team’s frustrations and continue to motivate them to deliver quality user experiences?

I watched 1800+ TED talks. I watched all those published on ted.com. Why? Because I am a TED addict. And because each of these talks reminds me that storytelling is essential in everything we do. Facts are important, but facts alone have no value. They have to be consumed to worthwhile. Stories make this happen by getting us involved. This applies to researching novel ways, it applies to creating products, it applies to leading people, it applies to educating kids, and it applies to marriage proposals. Essentially, it applies to anything worth doing. Storytelling is what makes stories happen. But, storytelling is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learnt. For example, an easy way to learn is to listen to good examples. Like TED talks. But, there are many ways to learn. And, there are even more ways to apply. It only takes us to invest in it. Why? Because storytelling is essential.

I use this set of slides for a talk I gave at ESUG 2014. Abstract: Moose is a platform for software and data analysis (http://moosetechnology.org). It runs on Pharo and it can help you figure out problems around software systems. In this talk, I show several real-life examples of how custom tools built on top of Moose helped solve concrete problems. The examples vary both in scope and in the kind of problems. For example, we talk about how we fixed a caching problem in a Java system by analyzing logs, or how we fixed a Morphic problem by means of visualization and interaction. Even if these problems are so different, all of them were solvable with one uniform set of programmable tools. That is the power of Moose, and it is now at the fingertips of any Pharo programmer.

We cannot continue to let systems loose in the wild without any concern for how we will deal with them at a later time. Two decades ago, Richard Gabriel coined the idea of software habitability. Indeed, given that engineers spend a significant part of their active life inside software systems, it is desirable for that system to be suitable for humans to live there. We go further and introduce the concept of software environmentalism based on a simple principle: Engineers have the right to build upon assessable systems and have the responsibility of producing assessable systems.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

We present an architecture of embedding models, vector databases, LLMs, and narrow ML for tracking global news narratives across a variety of countries/languages/news sources. As an example, we explore the real-time application of this architecture for tracking the news narrative surrounding the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny coming from Russian, French, and English sources.

Terragrunt, Terraspace, Terramate, terra... whatever. What is wrong with Terraform so people keep on creating wrappers and solutions around it? How OpenTofu will affect this dynamic? In this presentation, we will look into the fundamental driving forces behind a zoo of wrappers. Moreover, we are going to put together a wrapper ourselves so you can make an educated decision if you need one.

The action of the next cyber saga takes place in the mystical lands of the Asia-Pacific region, where the main characters began their digital activities in the middle of 2021 and qualitatively strengthened it in 2022. Corporate espionage, document theft, audio recordings, and data leaks from messaging platforms were all a matter of one day for Dark Pink. Their geographical focus may have started in the Asia-Pacific region, but their ambitions knew no bounds, targeting a European government ministry in a bold move to expand their portfolio. Their victim profile was as diverse as a UN meeting, targeting military organizations, government agencies, and even a religious organization. Because discrimination is not a fashionable agenda. In the world of cybercrime, they serve as a reminder that sometimes the most serious threats come in the most unassuming packages with a pink bow.

Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.
