Foundations of Christian Ethics
A man who is chronically ill thinking of terminating his life

2. By Action
EUTHANASIA
By Omission
Voluntary Euthanasia
Involuntary Euthanasia
Physician Assisted Suicide
Non-Voluntary Euthanasia
Assisted Suicide
Intentionally causing a person's death by performing an action
Intentionally
causing death by
not providing
necessary and
ordinary care
conducted with the consent of the patient
conducted where the consent of the patient is unavailable
conducted against the will of the patient
A doctor who helps another person
to kill themselves
3. I would support the Voluntary and Non-Voluntary
Euthansia to be carried out SOMETIMES
4. Voluntary and Non-Voluntary Euthanasia should be morally permissible in
certain conditions such as,
* If the Medical Science has nothing to do more with the Patient’s health
* If the family can not afford the medical expense of the patient
If Jesus is example and not merely redeemer, this understanding implies
that all people should be afforded the same freedom in death that
Jesus was without incurring moral guilt.
5. Jesus himself supports the Voluntary
Euthanasia by his death of the Cross
“The Christian church's aversion to suicide
need not inform its position on voluntary
active euthanasia any more than it informs
its understanding of the role Jesus played in
securing his own death.”
The Example of Christ and Voluntary
Active Euthanasia, W. Royce Clark
6. Pope John Paul II,
Evangelium Vitae, 1995
“Euthanasia is a grave violation
of the law of God, since it is the
deliberate and morally
unacceptable killing of a human
person.True compassion leads to
sharing another's pain; it does
not kill the person whose
suffering we cannot bear.”
CCC 2277
“Whatever its motives and means,
direct euthanasia consists in putting
an end to the lives of handicapped,
sick, or dying persons. It is morally
unacceptable. Thus an act or omission
which, of itself or by intention, causes
death in order to eliminate suffering
constitutes a murder gravely contrary
to the dignity of the human person
and to the respect due to the living
God, his Creator.”
2 Cor 4:16-17
“Therefore, we are not
discouraged; although our outer
self is wasting away, our inner
self is being renewed day by
day. For this momentary light
affliction is producing for us an
eternal weight of glory beyond
all comparison”
The church regards any law permitting
7. “Euthanasia is a crime
against human life,
incurable does not
mean end of care”

8. THREE MAJOR CAMPS
Three major camps with regard to euthanasia.
01. NO: Those who believe that any form of euthanasia is morally permissible
(based on the value of life).
02. SOMETIMES: Those who believe that voluntary euthanasia are morally
permissible but consider involuntary euthanasia as morally impermissible (based
on individual freedom).
03. YES: Those who have no moral objection to any form of euthanasia (based on
good consequences). Looking at euthanasia from the perspective of the modality
of carrying it out, it can be approached as three different types:
I. Allowing someone to die II. Mercy Death and III. Mercy Killing.
9. QUANDARY
Dilemma, to do or not to do
A state of complexity that
just doesn't seem to get solved
