This document discusses different data storage technologies and their properties. It asks which was designed to support information exchange, which would be more space efficient representing a dept-course-instructor model, and which have data typing abilities and require the most understanding of underlying data storage. Relational DBMS was designed for information exchange. Hierarchical DBMS would be more space efficient than network DBMS for the given data model due to supporting one-to-many relationships. Permanent data storage and relational DBMS have data typing abilities and require the most underlying data storage understanding, respectively.
