Geoquip were called out to Aintree Race Course following
problems with the borehole pump and a falling yield which meant
all three pumps couldn’t be used at the same time. A survey
revealed extensive iron bacteria contamination which had
clogged the pumps and screens as well as the irrigators and
sprinklers round the entire racecourse.
Geoquip recommended the BoreSaver borehole treatment
programme to return production to the original drilled capacity
and to help maintain a continual, problem free-water supply. The
programme included a downhole camera survey, a bespoke
software programme to analyse the results and the available
water quality data, a purpose built rehabilitation rig and
BoreSaver Ultra C.
Aintree now uses BoreSaver on an annual basis and yield has
improved by 300%. Specific capacity is back up to 90m³ an hour
and all three pumps can be used at the same time to maximise
output. There has also been a significant reduction in operational
problems. Andrew Tulloch, Regional Head of Racing NW and clerk
of the course at Aintree said, “BoreSaver is the treatment that
appears to return yield to the original output whilst reducing any
operational problems with the water supply to an absolute
minimum.”

Case Study – Water Supply (UK)
The Brede public water supply site near Hastings is a
complex system of tunnels, wells and adits. At over 100 years
of age, the facility was in desperate need of rehabilitation
due to the build up of iron oxide residues. The facility
comprises 3 wells with a diameter of 3m and 80m in depth.
400m and 20m long tunnels and adits connect the wells.
Water volume is approximately 1,726,000 litres.
The products were injected into the system and a recycling
loop achieved between two of the main wells. The treatment
liquid was cycled through the adits for a period of days,
followed by clearance pumping which took 5 days due to the
size and scope of the facility. In normal wells and bores, this
can be accomplished in just a few hours.
Pumped groundwater samples were taken throughout the
rehabilitation project. After 5 days of clearance pumping,
the raw water was returned to background values. A GCMS
scan, taken after clearance pumping, showed all iron oxide
residues had been removed, and the adits cleared of the IRB
biofilm .

Case Study – Public Water Supply
A 98m deep bore, used to supply public water for Belfast, had
been abandoned three years previously due to severe iron
oxide and iron bacteria contamination.
A downhole video camera survey revealed that the well liners
were completely clogged, with up to 5cm of film observed
over a 40m length of the PVC liner. The well was unable to
sustain yields of more than 0.2Ml/day, despite an original
yield of around 4Ml/day in the early 1970’s.
Previous remediation attempts using high pressure jetting at a
sister borehole proved unsuccessful, damaging the well liner
and making the well unusable.
BoreSaver Ultra C was added to the well, resulting in removal
of the iron bacteria and iron oxide deposits. The residues
safely pumped away to waste. Subsequent pumping tests
indicated that the original borehole yield of 4Ml/day had been
restored. Within one week of the remediation being
completed, the borehole was brought back into public supply
for the first time in 3 years.

Case Study – Geothermal Plant
The recharge well for a geothermal system was severely
contaminated with iron related bacteria, causing flooding in
adjacent areas and forcing the system to be switched off.
The geothermal plant was used to service an air conditioning
system for the District Council offices in Lodi, with an overall
thermal power of 0.6MW, achieved by one heat pump with
heat exchangers, a 42m deep abstraction well, a 29m deep
recharge well and 100m of pipework.
A video inspection of the system showed that both wells
were completely clogged with iron bacteria and iron oxide
residues. The slots in the screens in the recharge well were
completely sealed, preventing the discharge of purged water
into the ground.
BoreSaver Ultra C Pro was used to treat the system and a
post-treatment inspection revealed the screen slots were
virtually clear of contamination and the system was returned
to full operational use without subsequent borehole
clogging. An ongoing maintenance programme has been
introduced to maintain the system.

Case Study – Slope Stabilisation
The Isle of Wight Council look after the Castlehaven Coastal
Protection Scheme in the Niton area of the island.
They were having trouble with ground water contamination,
possibly from the septic tanks, which was causing iron
related bacteria to grow in the ground stabilisation
dewatering wells.
A solution that was environmentally friendly and easy to use
had to be found to maintain the running of the system and
hence stabilise the cliffs. The system comprised over 100
siphon wells interconnected with 10mm pipes hundreds of
metres in length via a series of deep chambers where the
accumulators were installed.
The Council have used BoreSaver since 2005 and it now
forms part of their regular maintenance programme. Twice a
year the system is flushed through with BoreSaver which
keeps the system from furring up and de-clogs the
accumulators where most of the problem occurs. Cleaning
the abstraction siphon wells also ensures that the wells
continue to yield effectively.

Case Study – Water Supply
One of Geoquip’s partners was asked to rehabilitate a borehole that
supplied a constant water supply for the Scottish manufacturing
plant of a global drinks brand. Production managers had noticed
falling yields and increased production costs. Symptoms indicated
a clogging of the aquifer caused by a build-up of silt, exacerbated
further by iron bacteria contamination, an acknowledged problem
in the area.
An investigation programme was implemented and a CCTV survey
carried out after the submersible pump was removed. This revealed
the borehole had silted up from its original depth of 309 meters to
291 meters and there was extensive iron oxide clogging on the
pump and screens. Sampling of the water confirmed the presence
of iron bacteria.
After removing the silt by scrubbing with a stiff wire brush and
airlifting purging, a careful treatment and purging regime using
BoreSaver was carried out over a 2 day period with on-site
Hydrogeologists monitoring water quality. Following neutralisation
the borehole water was pumped to waste and pumping trials were
performed. Using BoreSaver had returned the borehole to its
original condition with increased yield, reduced drawdown and
reduced pumping costs.
