Mama gives blanket; jerky (food); father’s coat, riffle

One by one, his father’s things gone

4. PLOT
EXPOSITION
Mama Torres is a widow and have three children. They are Pepe, Rosy, Emilio.
Pepe is the lazy oldest child. He has a knife which was his dad’s.
Mama Torres told Pepe to go to town to buy medicine & salt.
Pepe was very happy when his mother told to buy medicine and salt.
Pepe comes home in the middle of the night.
Pepe told his mother that he killed a man. Because they insult Pepe by saying that he could not allow as a man.
Pepe can’t handle this, and he killed with his knife the person who called him such names.
Mama Torres told Pepe to flee.
RISING ACTION

5. Mama Torres gives Pepe the father’s rifle and his black coat, jerky, a sleep roll, the gun with ten bullets and the fresh horse.
She states “Pepe is a man and he has a man’s thing to do”.
Pepe flee into a high mountain. Mama Torres beliefs if Pepe is not coming back.
Pepe is on the trail into the mountains.
One by one his father’s things gone.
Pepe sees one of the “dark watchers”. He struggles with the forces of society and nature. He sees dark figures.
Pepe see a dark watcher for a second time. He rest because afraid and tired.
Had a fight and he is wounded in the hands by a silver of granite.
CLIMAX

6. Pepe awake with his armpit hurting and his arm swollen.
He hears horses with dogs coming his way and he hides away for another night.
Pepe awakes again, he uses a sharp stone to break the flesh and squeeze out the infected area.
Pepe makes a prayer, he hears the bay of hounds.
Then he has shot and topples off of the cliff dead.
Pepe is dead.

RESOLUTION

7. THEMES
INNOCENCE
Pepe does not understand what is means to
be man and therefore is looked at as a boy
that shouldn’t be doing things requiring the
abilities and the mental attitude of man.
DEATH
The black handle, the black jerky he chews on
and last but not least his father coat. With all
these things combined, he is literally welcoming
death in his future with the darkness

SETTING TIME
Monterey, California (the place where Torres family
lived and the killing time happened)
High mountain (when Pepe had ‘the flight’)
Author time: Published by John Steinbeck about a
young boy named Pepe in 1951.
Plot time: Pepe must escape and sets out east into no
where to escape the men seeking revenge on him for
his mistake.

11. NATURALISTIC
Naturalistic is a literary genre that write
stories based on the idea that environment
determines and governs human character.
When Pepe left his home, his mother already
knew his fate and she already knew he was
going to die even before it happen.

12. POINT OF VIEW
The mode of narration that an author employs to let the readers “hear” and “see” what takes place in a story
• Mama thought him fine and brave , but
she never told him so. (In paragraph 3)

13. MORAL VALUE
The moral value contained in Flight is that in real life it
never gives up if we have a problem. We must try to find
a way out of the problem and be responsible for what
has been done.
Pepe's character describes someone who runs away from
a problem and accepts the consequences of his actions.
Pepe realizes what will happen to him. Pepe has no
choice but to keep going.
