Faith - Family - Friendship
Happy Thanksgiving!
Camp Luther has so much to be thankful for! We give thanks for the thousands of people who came to camp this
year, for the staff and volunteers who gave of themselves, and for you! It is you, the people of Camp Luther,
filled with the love of Jesus, who make all this possible. Without your donations of finances, time, and prayers
Camp Luther would not exist.
Above all, we give thanks to God, who gave His only Son to rescue and redeem us from our sin. It is because of
God’s love that Camp Luther has a message of hope and love to share!
~The Camp Luther Year-Round Staff
Start A Fire 2016They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road,
while he opened to us the Scriptures?” - Luke 24:32
This summer at Camp Luther, thousands of campers got to experience the theme “Start A Fire” lived out in their
own lives. Campers, guests, and families looked at how an encounter with Jesus transformed the lives of people
in the Gospels, and how He is still working today. They left knowing that Jesus forgives them, shows them grace,
loves them tremendously, and that they can trust Him in all things. Caring for all these campers were forty
summer staff who joined from locations all over the country for a summer of growing in faith, service,
leadership, and community.
Thank you to the Guest Pastors, Guest Medics, RV Volunteers, Kitchen Volunteers and countless others who
made Summer 2016 an outstanding success. All glory to God!

Volunteers of the Year!
Congratulations to Clay and Louise Reisler, Camp
Luther’s 2016 Volunteers of the Year! “Gator” and
“Weezy” met at Camp Luther in 1992 while serving on
the Camp Luther Summer Staff. That commitment to
serving, which flows from their faith in Jesus Christ,
has continued to be a part of their purpose and vision
as a family.
Last fall Clay and Louise agreed to serve as the chairs
of the 70th
Anniversary Alumni Staff Reunion. Their
leadership was instrumental in the success of that
event. Consistent meetings and coordination took place with an alumni staff as
part of a planning committee from areas all over the county. In previous years, the
Reislers have organized Thrivent Service Teams to assist with maintenance
projects, and were regular volunteers at our annual 5k trail run. Louise has served
on strategic planning committees in the past, and Clay is a member of the Camp
Luther Advisory Council.
Clay and Louise’s commitment to serving extends beyond
Camp Luther. The Reislers are very active in their
congregation, St. Paul Lutheran in Bonduel, and NEW
Lutheran High School in Green Bay. Clay and Louise have
two sons, Brock and Bennett, who are also active at camp,
with Bennett serving as a Junior Counselor this past
summer.
Thank you Gator and Weezy for serving this ministry!
Meaningful Service
In 1982, I joined the ranks of a small, but
proud group of Junior Engineers at Camp
Luther! I had no idea what I was in for
when I agreed to serve that summer for
two weeks, but I went willingly. It was a
chance to be at Camp Luther. Fuzzy, the
Camp Luther maintenance man put us to
work. There was a variety of projects we worked on those
two weeks, but all I can truly remember is pulling stumps! I
was hot. I was dirty. I was exhausted. But I loved it!
For many people, the first time they served, or the most
impactful times they served happened at camp. Serving
requires mind, body and spirit. “Meaningful Service” is one of
our core values at camp. When combined with a supportive,
Christ-centered environment, serving can significantly
impact our faith. And for some, it’s an experience they will
never forget.
For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs
of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to
God. - 2 Corinthians 9:12
Camp Luther offers many opportunities to serve. Here’s a
short list:
RV volunteering
Boards and committees
Workbee Weekends
IMPACT
Side-By-Side
Junior Counseling
Summer Staff
Servant Events at KBC
These programs engage the whole person in serving as a
response to God’s love for us in Christ. I am excited about the
new program Ignite at Keweenaw Base Camp in 2017, which
will focus youth specifically on serving; just as I experienced
as a Junior Engineer.
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Mark 10:45
I encourage you and your family to get involved in serving
through your camp, your church and community. Can you
think of a better way to show the world Christ than by being
his hands and feet to our neighbors? What better way to
give thanks to God?

Lakeview Remodel
Camp Luther continues to upgrade cottages for you! This
winter, crews will be working to completely remodel the
inside of Lakeview
cottage. Starting summer
2017, guests who stay in
Lakeview will enjoy a new
floor plan and furnishings.
In spring 2016, Crows Nest
and Down Yonder received
new floors. Camp Luther
plans to continue to
renovate cottages as funds
become available.
Volunteers Keep Camp Healthy
Have you ever thought about how many team players Camp Luther needs to be able to
make plays in sharing Christ with others? Over the last 70
years, there have been thousands of volunteer team
players who have come to camp and given their time and
talents. Blaine ‘Beemer’ Welch, Camp’s Director of Guest
Services, shares that thought in a devotion that he led at
the Workbee in October.
Fall is my favorite season for several reasons. The
leaves are changing, hunting seasons begin, and
there is a lot to do in the Northwoods this time of
year. Like many people in Wisconsin and across the country, one of my favorite
parts of the season is football. We all have our teams, from high school all the way
to the NFL. These days it seems like one of the most important things for any team
hoping to win a championship is avoiding injury and getting a healthy team all the
way to the big game.
The more I think about a team staying “healthy,” the more I realize that it isn’t
always about just avoiding injury, but the teams that seem to be the most successful
are the teams that can still function at a high level when injury occurs. When the
Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl in 2010, they had 15 starters listed on
injured reserve, and two more starters got hurt during the game. Still, the team was
able to continue to execute the game plan with whatever players were in the
game. “Healthy” means building a team that can flourish and still win a
championship with whoever is on the field.
Colossians 2:6-7 reads, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to
live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you
were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
One will often hear Camp Luther staff say something like “Camp can’t survive
without the volunteers that donate their time and efforts.”
And so, I began to think about what would actually happen without Workbee
Weekends. Camp staff would have an insurmountable list of projects that would
constantly take away from time that is vital to providing the finest programs
possible, and ultimately Camp Luther would crumble.
Our faith walk is the same. We can all function for awhile but this is a sinful world
and eventually that sin is going to beat us lower and lower UNLESS we take refuge
in God’s Word and build ourselves up in it so that we can not only survive the trials
but that we can thrive in them.
We know that in all these things, God’s grace will hold us up and it is our mediation
on His Word that allows us to see that grace take form in our lives.
Camp Luther had over 80 people present for Workbee this October.

As 2016 nears an end, we are already gearing up for next
summer! Keweenaw Base Camp had another successful year and continues to grow. Everything we
do helps our guests grow emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Whether it is a devotion on the
beaches of Lake Superior, sea kayaking at the top of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Copper Harbor,
hiking through the natural beauty that God has created to a bluff that overlooks Lake Superior, or
simply time for personal spiritual growth, our aim is to help you grow in Christ.
We are very excited to be adding a few new programs for the
summer of 2017! The first, Venture, is perfect for those who
have previously attended The Edge or similar KBC
programming. It will build on The Edge and include one or
two nights camping in the wilderness. We are also adding
Ignite, which is an opportunity for individuals to come to
Keweenaw Base Camp and participate in a variety of service
projects for the week. KBC will continue to offer servant
events that include personal human interaction such as
ministering to shut ins, kids, and the elderly. We also have
options that include hammer and nail projects at Base Camp
and the community.
Many thanks go out to all the wonderful staff that helped
make Keweenaw Base Camp a success this past year,
especially Green, our Interim Base Camp Director, and Kinch
and Radar, our summer Program Coordinators.
Additional opportunities to experience the Keweenaw
Peninsula and KBC include a men's retreat, women's retreat,
staff outings, leadership training, and athletic team
preparation. If you're looking for an opportunity to serve,
participate in leadership or teambuilding activities, or a
mixture of these, we’d love to work with you!
Welcome, Marcus!
Camp Luther is excited to welcome Marcus
Huff as the Keweenaw Base Camp Director!
The oldest of three boys, Marcus grew up
loving Jesus in St. Joseph, Michigan. He
graduated from Concordia, St. Paul as a
Director of Christian Outreach.
Camp ministry is not new to Marcus as he
served as Summer Staff at both Camp
Perkins, and Crooked Creek Ranch. He’s
worked extensively with the British Colum-
bia Mission Boat Society in Parksville, British
Columbia Canada, most recently serving as
their Executive Director.
Marcus is excited to share God’s love, grace
and forgiveness through the outdoor
ministry at Keweenaw Base Camp, and at
Saints Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in
Houghton, Michigan, where he also serves as
Director of Youth and Campus Ministry.
Early this November, Marcus married Laura
at her family’s farm in Iowa. Laura is a
trained Oncology Bone Marrow transplant
registered nurse.
The U.P. and
Keweenaw Base
Camp are a
perfect fit for
Marcus as he
loves the
outdoors, hiking,
wilderness, and
adventures!

Camp Luther was filled with hugs, laughs, and trips down memory lane July 1-3, 2016 as those who served on Camp’s Summer and Full-time Staff
during the past 70 years gathered for a reunion. Alumni staff in attendance came from 14 states and represented 6 decades! The reunion theme was
Surrounded, coming from Hebrews 12: 1. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that
hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,”
Thank you to everyone who participated in the weekend, and anyone who has served on Camp Luther’s staff!

New Programs!
Camp Luther is excited to announce the addition of FOUR new programs for summer 2017!
More information on these and all of Camp Luther’s Summer Camps can be found at
www.campluther.com/summercamp.
Sailing Camp
Sailing is the best way to travel! At Sailing Camp, you'll learn how to sail and ride the wind
and the waves throughout the week. Each day you'll spend 3-4 hours receiving sailing
instruction, practicing your skills, and having a blast on the water. Instruction is provided by
an adult with extensive sailing experience. Campers should be comfortable in the water.
Sailing Camp is a weeklong program for 6-8 graders. It
runs concurrently with Camp Luther’s youth camp
program, which means when not in sailing instruction,
campers will be able to participate in many of their
favorite youth camp activities throughout the week.
This program is only offered once this summer, so sign
up early!
Quest
Quest is back!! With the same name and adventurous spirit as the past Camp Luther
program, Quest is a weeklong program for 7-9th graders that uses unforgettable
experiences, offsite adventure trips, intentional group building activities, and a close-knit
community to challenge you with what it means to follow Jesus Christ. Quest is a chance to
make friendships that last, to be a part of something that’s real, and to live in a community
that meets you where you're coming from but also pushes you to be something more.
You’ll have counselors who want to be a part of your life, to
go with you on the journey. And you’ll be plunging into an
adventure that's going to be some of the most fun you've
ever had!
Quest will be offered only 3 weeks this summer, and space
is limited to 10 campers each week, so sign up early!

"Working at Camp taught me how to be a leader.
It's more than just teaching kids how to play Gaga
Ball, or making sure no one gets lost (though these
are important). I've learned that to lead others,
you have to lead yourself. Being in that mentor/
role model position gave me a great opportunity
to practice and build these skills. As life goes on, I
find myself using these skills more and more, and
it's cool to look back and see how God has been at
work in this aspect of my life!"
-Rocket
“Building relationships centered around Christ's
love with campers and fellow staff members
reminded me of what really matters. It was so
moving to put aside my stresses of daily life and
refocus my priorities.”
-Soy
“My own faith grew
seeing how God is
working in the lives of
campers.”
-Intro
"Camp Luther broke me out of my comfort zone
and opened the world to me in a light I've never
seen before. The way God works through the kids,
the staff, and me has left me with an everlasting
joyful servant attitude."
-Psych
“I applied to camp as someone who had never
been to summer camp before and it was the best
decision of my life. I learned to be confident as a
leader and learned new ways to show Jesus's love
to those around me. I came to camp as a stranger
and left at the end of the summer with a
family. Apply to work at camp; I personally
guarantee it is a decision you will never regret.”
-Chip
A summer spent working at camp immerses you in
a community where you get to explore together
what it means to love Jesus and love like Jesus. It’s
kingdom ministry that’s intense, and deep, and life
changing. Camp Luther is just one of 26 NLOMA
(National Lutheran Outdoors Ministry Association)
camps that are located around the country.
For more information, or to learn how to apply,
visit www.campluther.com/summerstaff.
New at KBC
Venture
Venture is a week-long program for 10-12 graders, and is recommended for campers who
have previously attended The Edge or similar KBC program. Venture builds on The Edge
with an overnight adventure trip, and new challenge
experiences, all with the same close-knit community feel and
incredible staff who are ready to embrace the adventure
alongside you. Get ready for more adventure, more challenge,
more faith building, and more unforgettable memories.
Ignite
Sometimes the greatest adventure is loving and serving the people around you. Ignite is a
week-long program for 9-12 graders focused on mission and service. Get ready to be
challenged with what it really means to follow the call of Jesus Christ. You’ll serve the local
community, get your hands dirty doing work projects, and dive deep into the adventure of
following Jesus Christ, all with staff leaders who are looking to push you to go deeper in
living out your faith.
Venture and Ignite are only offered once this summer, so sign up early!
For programs at KBC, campers will meet at Camp Luther on Sunday during registration and
then head up to Keweenaw Base Camp for the week, returning on Friday to be picked up at
Camp Luther.
Thank you, Dodger!
After nine years of leading Camp Luther as
Executive Director, Roger “Dodger” Michelson
retired this June. Thank you, Dodger, for all
that you accomplished for the ministry during
your time at Camp Luther.
Congratulations on your retirement, and may
God continue to bless you as you serve Him in
your life!
Welcome, Sojo!
Hello! My name is Sojo, and I’m thrilled to join the Camp Luther full-time staff as Program and Communications Manager! I call the very small town
of Clear Lake, Wisconsin my hometown, but am enjoying settling into my new home in the Northwoods.
When someone asks me how I’ve come to work at Camp or how long I’ve been working here, I have to laugh a little. My
journey here is full of twists and turns, and different positions, but I can see God working in all of it. As I grew up, Camp
Luther had a clear impact on my social and spiritual life as I participated in youth camps, IMPACT, and youth retreats.
Some of my biggest “aha” faith moments happened during Camp Luther programming.
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication in May 2014.
During the summer of 2015 I served as Camp Luther’s Congregational Day Camp Coordinator. That fall I continued at
camp, but in the position of Program Assistant. In April 2016, I came back over the little bridge, this time as Interim
Program Director and worked with our summer special programs. This fall I was more than delighted to come back once
more in my current position.
One of the great things about my job is that I not only get to work hands on with programming and guests of camp, but I
also have the privilege of sharing the Camp Luther Story with everyone!

We give thanks for the thousands of people who came to camp this year, for the staff and volunteers who gave of themselves, and for you! It is you, the people of Camp Luther, filled with the love of Jesus, who make all this possible. Without your donations of finances, time, and prayers Camp Luther would not exist. Above all, we give thanks to God, who gave His only Son to rescue and redeem us from our sin. It is because of God’s love that Camp Luther has a message of hope and love to share! ~The Camp Luther Year-Round Staff Start A Fire 2016They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” - Luke 24:32 This summer at Camp Luther, thousands of campers got to experience the theme “Start A Fire” lived out in their own lives. Campers, guests, and families looked at how an encounter with Jesus transformed the lives of people in the Gospels, and how He is still working today. They left knowing that Jesus forgives them, shows them grace, loves them tremendously, and that they can trust Him in all things. Caring for all these campers were forty summer staff who joined from locations all over the country for a summer of growing in faith, service, leadership, and community. Thank you to the Guest Pastors, Guest Medics, RV Volunteers, Kitchen Volunteers and countless others who made Summer 2016 an outstanding success. All glory to God! • 2. 2 Volunteers of the Year! Congratulations to Clay and Louise Reisler, Camp Luther’s 2016 Volunteers of the Year! “Gator” and “Weezy” met at Camp Luther in 1992 while serving on the Camp Luther Summer Staff. That commitment to serving, which flows from their faith in Jesus Christ, has continued to be a part of their purpose and vision as a family. Last fall Clay and Louise agreed to serve as the chairs of the 70th Anniversary Alumni Staff Reunion. Their leadership was instrumental in the success of that event. Consistent meetings and coordination took place with an alumni staff as part of a planning committee from areas all over the county. In previous years, the Reislers have organized Thrivent Service Teams to assist with maintenance projects, and were regular volunteers at our annual 5k trail run. Louise has served on strategic planning committees in the past, and Clay is a member of the Camp Luther Advisory Council. Clay and Louise’s commitment to serving extends beyond Camp Luther. The Reislers are very active in their congregation, St. Paul Lutheran in Bonduel, and NEW Lutheran High School in Green Bay. Clay and Louise have two sons, Brock and Bennett, who are also active at camp, with Bennett serving as a Junior Counselor this past summer. Thank you Gator and Weezy for serving this ministry! Meaningful Service In 1982, I joined the ranks of a small, but proud group of Junior Engineers at Camp Luther! I had no idea what I was in for when I agreed to serve that summer for two weeks, but I went willingly. It was a chance to be at Camp Luther. Fuzzy, the Camp Luther maintenance man put us to work. There was a variety of projects we worked on those two weeks, but all I can truly remember is pulling stumps! I was hot. I was dirty. I was exhausted. But I loved it! For many people, the first time they served, or the most impactful times they served happened at camp. Serving requires mind, body and spirit. “Meaningful Service” is one of our core values at camp. When combined with a supportive, Christ-centered environment, serving can significantly impact our faith. And for some, it’s an experience they will never forget. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. - 2 Corinthians 9:12 Camp Luther offers many opportunities to serve. Here’s a short list: RV volunteering Boards and committees Workbee Weekends IMPACT Side-By-Side Junior Counseling Summer Staff Servant Events at KBC These programs engage the whole person in serving as a response to God’s love for us in Christ. I am excited about the new program Ignite at Keweenaw Base Camp in 2017, which will focus youth specifically on serving; just as I experienced as a Junior Engineer. “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Mark 10:45 I encourage you and your family to get involved in serving through your camp, your church and community. Can you think of a better way to show the world Christ than by being his hands and feet to our neighbors? What better way to give thanks to God? In His Service, Gary “Woody” Vought Executive Director Advisory Council Thank you to the Camp Luther Advisory Council for your time and dedication to always making Camp Luther better. Brian Parker, Marshfield, WI Meranda Eggebrecht, Marshfield, WI Emily Schuette, New Praque, MN Joel Brandt, Wausau, WI Mike Henning, Appleton, WI Renae Miracle, Mequon, WI Thane Bublitz, Neenah, WI Karla Arrigoni, Rice Lake, WI Judy Hintz, Appleton, WI Nathan Schwanz, Wausau, WI Camp Luther Board of Directors Thank you to the Camp Luther Board of Directors for your leadership and wisdom in guiding this ministry. Please remember the camp board in your prayers. *Special thanks to these members whose term will be ending January 2017. • 3. 3 Lakeview Remodel Camp Luther continues to upgrade cottages for you! This winter, crews will be working to completely remodel the inside of Lakeview cottage. Starting summer 2017, guests who stay in Lakeview will enjoy a new floor plan and furnishings. In spring 2016, Crows Nest and Down Yonder received new floors. Camp Luther plans to continue to renovate cottages as funds become available. Volunteers Keep Camp Healthy Have you ever thought about how many team players Camp Luther needs to be able to make plays in sharing Christ with others? Over the last 70 years, there have been thousands of volunteer team players who have come to camp and given their time and talents. Blaine ‘Beemer’ Welch, Camp’s Director of Guest Services, shares that thought in a devotion that he led at the Workbee in October. Fall is my favorite season for several reasons. The leaves are changing, hunting seasons begin, and there is a lot to do in the Northwoods this time of year. Like many people in Wisconsin and across the country, one of my favorite parts of the season is football. We all have our teams, from high school all the way to the NFL. These days it seems like one of the most important things for any team hoping to win a championship is avoiding injury and getting a healthy team all the way to the big game. The more I think about a team staying “healthy,” the more I realize that it isn’t always about just avoiding injury, but the teams that seem to be the most successful are the teams that can still function at a high level when injury occurs. When the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl in 2010, they had 15 starters listed on injured reserve, and two more starters got hurt during the game. Still, the team was able to continue to execute the game plan with whatever players were in the game. “Healthy” means building a team that can flourish and still win a championship with whoever is on the field. Colossians 2:6-7 reads, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” One will often hear Camp Luther staff say something like “Camp can’t survive without the volunteers that donate their time and efforts.” And so, I began to think about what would actually happen without Workbee Weekends. Camp staff would have an insurmountable list of projects that would constantly take away from time that is vital to providing the finest programs possible, and ultimately Camp Luther would crumble. Our faith walk is the same. We can all function for awhile but this is a sinful world and eventually that sin is going to beat us lower and lower UNLESS we take refuge in God’s Word and build ourselves up in it so that we can not only survive the trials but that we can thrive in them. We know that in all these things, God’s grace will hold us up and it is our mediation on His Word that allows us to see that grace take form in our lives. Camp Luther had over 80 people present for Workbee this October. Prayer Requests For all applying for 2017 Camp Luther Summer Staff positions. For all applying for Junior Counselor positions. In thankfulness for all Camp Luther Volunteers! For wisdom and guidance to members of the Camp Luther Board of Directors. For the Camp Luther year-round staff. In thankfulness for all who support Camp Luther through their prayers and financial support. For the future of Camp Luther as the Filled with the Spirit Campaign is shared with more people. • 4. 4 As 2016 nears an end, we are already gearing up for next summer! Keweenaw Base Camp had another successful year and continues to grow. Everything we do helps our guests grow emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Whether it is a devotion on the beaches of Lake Superior, sea kayaking at the top of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Copper Harbor, hiking through the natural beauty that God has created to a bluff that overlooks Lake Superior, or simply time for personal spiritual growth, our aim is to help you grow in Christ. We are very excited to be adding a few new programs for the summer of 2017! The first, Venture, is perfect for those who have previously attended The Edge or similar KBC programming. It will build on The Edge and include one or two nights camping in the wilderness. We are also adding Ignite, which is an opportunity for individuals to come to Keweenaw Base Camp and participate in a variety of service projects for the week. KBC will continue to offer servant events that include personal human interaction such as ministering to shut ins, kids, and the elderly. We also have options that include hammer and nail projects at Base Camp and the community. Many thanks go out to all the wonderful staff that helped make Keweenaw Base Camp a success this past year, especially Green, our Interim Base Camp Director, and Kinch and Radar, our summer Program Coordinators. Additional opportunities to experience the Keweenaw Peninsula and KBC include a men's retreat, women's retreat, staff outings, leadership training, and athletic team preparation. If you're looking for an opportunity to serve, participate in leadership or teambuilding activities, or a mixture of these, we’d love to work with you! Welcome, Marcus! Camp Luther is excited to welcome Marcus Huff as the Keweenaw Base Camp Director! The oldest of three boys, Marcus grew up loving Jesus in St. Joseph, Michigan. He graduated from Concordia, St. Paul as a Director of Christian Outreach. Camp ministry is not new to Marcus as he served as Summer Staff at both Camp Perkins, and Crooked Creek Ranch. He’s worked extensively with the British Colum- bia Mission Boat Society in Parksville, British Columbia Canada, most recently serving as their Executive Director. Marcus is excited to share God’s love, grace and forgiveness through the outdoor ministry at Keweenaw Base Camp, and at Saints Peter & Paul Lutheran Church in Houghton, Michigan, where he also serves as Director of Youth and Campus Ministry. Early this November, Marcus married Laura at her family’s farm in Iowa. Laura is a trained Oncology Bone Marrow transplant registered nurse. The U.P. and Keweenaw Base Camp are a perfect fit for Marcus as he loves the outdoors, hiking, wilderness, and adventures! The reunion theme was Surrounded, coming from Hebrews 12: 1. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” Thank you to everyone who participated in the weekend, and anyone who has served on Camp Luther’s staff! Where is Everyone Now??... • 6. New Programs! Camp Luther is excited to announce the addition of FOUR new programs for summer 2017! More information on these and all of Camp Luther’s Summer Camps can be found at www.campluther.com/summercamp. Sailing Camp Sailing is the best way to travel! At Sailing Camp, you'll learn how to sail and ride the wind and the waves throughout the week. Each day you'll spend 3-4 hours receiving sailing instruction, practicing your skills, and having a blast on the water. Instruction is provided by an adult with extensive sailing experience. Campers should be comfortable in the water. Sailing Camp is a weeklong program for 6-8 graders. It runs concurrently with Camp Luther’s youth camp program, which means when not in sailing instruction, campers will be able to participate in many of their favorite youth camp activities throughout the week. This program is only offered once this summer, so sign up early! Quest Quest is back!! With the same name and adventurous spirit as the past Camp Luther program, Quest is a weeklong program for 7-9th graders that uses unforgettable experiences, offsite adventure trips, intentional group building activities, and a close-knit community to challenge you with what it means to follow Jesus Christ. Quest is a chance to make friendships that last, to be a part of something that’s real, and to live in a community that meets you where you're coming from but also pushes you to be something more. You’ll have counselors who want to be a part of your life, to go with you on the journey. And you’ll be plunging into an adventure that's going to be some of the most fun you've ever had! Quest will be offered only 3 weeks this summer, and space is limited to 10 campers each week, so sign up early! 6 Apply for Summer Staff! "Working at Camp taught me how to be a leader. It's more than just teaching kids how to play Gaga Ball, or making sure no one gets lost (though these are important). I've learned that to lead others, you have to lead yourself. Being in that mentor/ role model position gave me a great opportunity to practice and build these skills. As life goes on, I find myself using these skills more and more, and it's cool to look back and see how God has been at work in this aspect of my life!" -Rocket “Building relationships centered around Christ's love with campers and fellow staff members reminded me of what really matters. It was so moving to put aside my stresses of daily life and refocus my priorities.” -Soy “My own faith grew seeing how God is working in the lives of campers.” -Intro "Camp Luther broke me out of my comfort zone and opened the world to me in a light I've never seen before. The way God works through the kids, the staff, and me has left me with an everlasting joyful servant attitude." -Psych “I applied to camp as someone who had never been to summer camp before and it was the best decision of my life. I learned to be confident as a leader and learned new ways to show Jesus's love to those around me. I came to camp as a stranger and left at the end of the summer with a family. Apply to work at camp; I personally guarantee it is a decision you will never regret.” -Chip A summer spent working at camp immerses you in a community where you get to explore together what it means to love Jesus and love like Jesus. It’s kingdom ministry that’s intense, and deep, and life changing. Camp Luther is just one of 26 NLOMA (National Lutheran Outdoors Ministry Association) camps that are located around the country. For more information, or to learn how to apply, visit www.campluther.com/summerstaff. New at KBC Venture Venture is a week-long program for 10-12 graders, and is recommended for campers who have previously attended The Edge or similar KBC program. Venture builds on The Edge with an overnight adventure trip, and new challenge experiences, all with the same close-knit community feel and incredible staff who are ready to embrace the adventure alongside you. Get ready for more adventure, more challenge, more faith building, and more unforgettable memories. Ignite Sometimes the greatest adventure is loving and serving the people around you. Ignite is a week-long program for 9-12 graders focused on mission and service. Get ready to be challenged with what it really means to follow the call of Jesus Christ. You’ll serve the local community, get your hands dirty doing work projects, and dive deep into the adventure of following Jesus Christ, all with staff leaders who are looking to push you to go deeper in living out your faith. Venture and Ignite are only offered once this summer, so sign up early! For programs at KBC, campers will meet at Camp Luther on Sunday during registration and then head up to Keweenaw Base Camp for the week, returning on Friday to be picked up at Camp Luther.
  • 7. Thank you, Dodger! After nine years of leading Camp Luther as Executive Director, Roger “Dodger” Michelson retired this June. Thank you, Dodger, for all that you accomplished for the ministry during your time at Camp Luther. Congratulations on your retirement, and may God continue to bless you as you serve Him in your life! Welcome, Sojo! Hello! My name is Sojo, and I’m thrilled to join the Camp Luther full-time staff as Program and Communications Manager! I call the very small town of Clear Lake, Wisconsin my hometown, but am enjoying settling into my new home in the Northwoods. When someone asks me how I’ve come to work at Camp or how long I’ve been working here, I have to laugh a little. My journey here is full of twists and turns, and different positions, but I can see God working in all of it. As I grew up, Camp Luther had a clear impact on my social and spiritual life as I participated in youth camps, IMPACT, and youth retreats. That fall I continued at camp, but in the position of Program Assistant. In April 2016, I came back over the little bridge, this time as Interim Program Director and worked with our summer special programs. This fall I was more than delighted to come back once more in my current position. One of the great things about my job is that I not only get to work hands on with programming and guests of camp, but I also have the privilege of sharing the Camp Luther Story with everyone! If you’ve called Camp Luther or walked into the Welcome Center within the last 13 years, you’ve likely talked to Mary Ann “Welcome” Watt., Camp Luther’s Administrative Assis- tant. This November Welcome moved to sunny Florida! Thank you, Welcome, for your years of service and greeting everyone with a smile! May the Lord bless your next adventure ! Thank you, Weaver! Ann “Weaver” Weaver served Camp Luther as Business and Finance Manager for a short time, but made a big impact. After working to update Camp’s budget this summer, she and her family moved to Southern Wisconsin to care for family. Thank you, Weaver, for all you did during your time at Camp Luther, and may God continue to work through you each and every day! 7 Welcome, Kristina! Hi, my name is Kristina (I’m still looking for the perfect camp name). My family (husband Aaron, seven year old daughter Samantha and our chocolate lab Caddie) moved here a year ago from Eau Claire. We love living in the Northwoods, enjoying the outdoors and being close to family. I worked the last 8 years in government administration, working on projects, budgets and HR. I am excited to be a part of the Camp Luther team as Business and Finance Manager!
