A suggested eight session sequence for therapist using the concepts presented in the Counseling for Couples Workshop

1. Mid-Course Corrections – An Eight Session Program
Using the Support of the Couple’s Workstation
Session 1. Introduction, Three statements with Mirroring. Hand out the Brief
Relationship Workup and the How to Join the Couple’s Workstation information.
Session 2. Go over the Brief Relationship Work-up, Teach about “Triggers” and have
them fill out a trigger in the Mid-Course Corrections manual. Give the homework
assignment to enter 1-3 triggers on the Workstation. If time, start teaching about the Four
Critical Moments and show them how to Interview each other, practicing “mirroring”.
Session 3. Teach them to fill out the RFE, focus mostly on pages 1 & 2. Teach the
Three Brains and the holding exercise in the last 15 minutes. Homework is to enter the
work they did in the Workstation and to do the holding exercise four times during the
next week, each of the initiating it twice.
Session 4. Teach the Revised RFE, pages 3 & 4, making sure the NBCR’s are well
formed. Finish the Four Critical Moments Exercise. Assignment: enter the completed
RFE on the Workstation and print out the summary and the sharing guides to bring in
next week.
Session 5. Have one partner share their RFE, following the Sharing Guide on the
Website.
Session 6. Have the other partner share their RFE following the Sharing Guide on the
Website.
Session 7. Teach flooding and the Caring Behaviors Exercise. Have them do
spontaneous flooding in the office and get them started with the forms in the Manual.
Assignment: Enter the information into their Workstation and do a flooding exercise at
home. Also be working on another RFE to bring in for fine-tuning next week.
Session 8. Teach the Fun Exercise and the Special Days, get them started in the office on
the Forms. Fine-tune the RFE’s they bring in.
Additional Sessions as needed until they have filled out, fine-tuned and shared 5 RFE’s
each and have all the positive exercises completed.
