B. Read and order these paragraphs (1 to 3) about Elijah Toten´s life. Use the answer
      sheet to write your answers.

0 - While most high school students are watching television or playing video games; Elijah
Toten is sitting at his computer writing novels and short stories. Toten, a 17-year-old senior at
Ethel High School, who recently released his first novel, The Age of the Asteroids, has completed
his second novel, The Choosing, and is working on a third.

__- In the seventh grade, he became more serious about his writing
when a special teacher encouraged him to follow his dream. “She saw
my potential and encouraged me to write,” says Elijah. “I have
dedicated my first book to her.”

__- At the age of six, Elijah and his family moved from Georgia to
West, a small town in Mississippi. Growing up, he always enjoyed reading and writing and
would spend hours reading science fiction novels and writing short stories. “I started writing
when I was about six and have been doing it ever since,” says Elijah.

__- “He’s been writing since he could hold a pencil,” says Elijah’s mother Theresa, who keeps a
file cabinet of his work. “He’s been writing short stories for years.”

                                                                                         /3

C. Read the text in Section B again and find words or expressions related to Elijah’s a.
education and b. free time activities. Write them on the separate answer sheet.

D. Say if the sentences below are TRUE or FALSE. Provide the evidence by writing the key
words of the sentence on the separate answer sheet.

That teacher, Bobbie Ray, would read his stories and give him suggestions on ways to improve
his writing. “She told me that everybody has a story to tell, but they just
have to get it out there,” he says. “She told me I would be the next
                       Stephen King.”

On a typical day, Elijah goes to school and then comes home and writes
until 10 p.m. “I´d say he spends six or seven hours reading and writing
every day,” says Theresa. “As soon as he gets off the bus, he heads for the computer.”

                                     ~4~
His main passion may be writing, but Elijah also has other interests. He loves playing the drums
and is drum head of the Ethel High School Tiger Band. “I’ve been playing drums since the sixth
grade and I really enjoy it,” says Elijah. “But it takes a lot of discipline to balance out writing and
school activities.”

His first novel is an adventure science fiction tale that centres on a character named Isaiah, the
captain of a ship that has been lost in space and must fight the evil Asteroida to save the
universe. Along the way, the ship is sucked into a spacial rip, the crew mutinies, and Isaiah is
haunted by a terrible curse.

“He’s always had a vivid imagination,” Theresa laughs.
