ten of the Billboard hot 100, which was very successful
for a small record company.
• In 1972, Motown began to expand to television and film
production and had multiple owners until ending up in
the hands of Universal music group in 1994.
• Motown was the highest earning African American
business in the USA for many decades.
3. Sony Records
• Sony Music Entertainment is an American music company owned
by Sony.
• It was founded in 1929, called American Record Corporation, but
renames Columbia recording corporation as of 1938.
• Furthermore, in 1966, it became CBS records before being bought
by Sony Corporation in 1987 and renamed it Sony Music
entertainment.
• In 2014, Sony has phenomenal success, with 11 number 1 singles
and 5 individual awards at The BRITS 2015. Several artists that
won awards were Paloma Faith, Foo Fighters, One Direction and
Pharrell Williams.
• More recently, in 2017, Sony Music UK collected 7 out of the 11
awards at the BRITS, making it their most successful year in terms
of award winning.
4. YouTube
• YouTube is an American platform which allows users to
video-share.
• It was created in February 2005 by former PayPal
employees: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawad Karim.
• In 2006, Google bought the website off them for
$1.65billion.
• Their headquarters are located in San Bruno, California.
• The website allows users to upload, view, like and comment
on videos, and subscribe to other users.
• YouTube broadcast videos such as music videos,
documentaries, short films, trailers, vlogs, and so on.
• It uses technology such as adobe flash player to display
these videos.
5. Vimeo
• Vimeo is a website which allows you to upload, share and
view videos.
• It was founded in November 2004 by Jake Lodwick and Zach
Klein.
• As of 2007, it was the first high definition video sharing
platform.
• The name ‘vimeo’ is a combination of the words ‘video’ and
‘me’, created by Lodwick and is also an anagram of the word
movie.
• Their slogan is ‘film with a passion’.
• Vimeo attracts more than 100 million visitors a month, as
well as 22 million registered users. 15% of these visits comes
from mobile devices.
