The document describes Jesus' crucifixion and fulfillment of prophecies about his death. It notes he carried his cross to Golgotha where he was crucified between two thieves. Signs were placed labeling him the King of the Jews in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. Soldiers cast lots for his clothing and Jesus ensured his mother Mary was cared for before dying. With his final words "It is finished" he fulfilled the plan to save mankind from sin through his sacrifice, as foretold in the Old Testament.
2. Do you like to wear one…?
•Millions of Christians do
•Do you know the differences?
•Today it’s a symbol of our
freedom to worship
•A symbol of victory over death
•But if you were to go back in
time 2000 years, people would
react to you much differently...
3. 17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went
out, bearing His own cross, to the place called
the Place of a Skull, which is called in
Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified
Him, and with Him two other men, one on
either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Pilate
also wrote an inscription and put it on the
cross. It was written, “JESUS THE
NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
20 Therefore many of the Jews read this
inscription, for the place where Jesus was
4. crucified was near the city; and it was written
in [k]Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. 21 So the
chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate,
“Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that
He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate
answered, “What I have written I have
written.”
23 Then the soldiers, when they had
crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and
made four parts, a part to every soldier and
also the [l]tunic; now the tunic was seamless,
woven [m]in one piece. 24 So they said to one
5. another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it,
to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill
the Scripture: “THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER
GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY
CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS.” 25 Therefore the
soldiers did these things.
But standing by the cross of Jesus were
His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the
wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When
Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple
6. whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to
His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your
mother!” From that hour the disciple took her
into his own household.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all
things had already been accomplished, to
fulfill the Scripture, *said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A
jar full of sour wine was standing there; so
they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon
7. a branch of hyssop and brought it up to
His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had
received the sour wine, He said, “It is
finished!” And He bowed His head and
gave up His spirit.
John 19:17-30, NASB
8. Prophecies Fulfilled…
•The final steps of Jesus’ Ministry
was no chance happening…
•It was all part of the Master Plan to save
mankind from damnation and was
prophesied throughout the Old Testament
•Written centuries before, several passages
clearly prophesy the Messiah’s Crucifixion
9. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.
13 They open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water,
And all my bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;
It is melted within me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You lay me in the dust of death.
16 For dogs have surrounded me;
A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
They pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
They look, they stare at me;
18 They divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.
Psalm 22:12-18, NASB
10. Prophecies Fulfilled…
•The final steps of Jesus’ Ministry
was no chance happening…
•It was all part of the Master Plan to save
mankind from damnation and was
prophesied throughout the Old Testament
•Written centuries before, several passages
clearly prophesy the Messiah’s Crucifixion
•Another in Isaiah 53– suffer AND crucified
with sinners
11. Savior’s Death March…
•Vv 17-18, the “most cruel and shameful
of all punishments” said Cicero
•Probably invented by the Persians and
Phoenicians, but Rome perfected it
•No Roman citizen could be crucified, except
if he was an insurgent
•The beam was 75 to 100 lbs, and most
carried their own as Jesus did
12. Pilate has the last word…
•Vv 19-22, Pilate gets a blow
in on the Jews who’d beaten
him so many times
•Politician Pilate understood why the Jews
hated Jesus so much– Envy
•He knew what he wrote would insult and
embarrass them– he got the last word
•Note: location unsure, church or Calvary
13. Fulfilling every prophetic detail…
•Vv 23-24 fulfill the prophecy of Psalm 22
•Most executions had a Centurion with 4
more soldiers to carry out the details
•Their privilege was to keep whatever
possessions the dying prisoners had
•The other Gospels tell of passersby
reviling Jesus– hence the Psalmist’s
description of His treatment by “dogs”
14. “Behold your mother…”
•Vv 25-27, Jesus asked His best friend
John to take care of His mother
•With Him from the beginning of His
ministry, there silent at the end
•Simeon had prophesied what she was
feeling at this moment
•As His mother she might have saved
Him; what a testimony of His Deity!
15. It Is Finished!
•Vv 28-30, the vinegar is enough to
whet His throat for the victorious
shout “Tetelestai!”
•Greek word, dead today, but very
meaningful in the 1st century
•When a servant reported finishing chores
to his master, he would say, ‘tetelestai’
•When an artist finished a painting or
sculpture
16. It Is Finished!
•When a priest examined an animal
sacrifice and found it faultless, this
word would apply
•But maybe the most meaningful is how the
word was used by merchants of the day
•“The debt is paid in full!”
•Tetelestai! Hallelujah!!
•Salvation is complete! No more needs doing!
17. Take Home
1. Jesus came to pay a debt He did not
owe, because we owe a debt we could not
pay
2. Faith in Jesus Christ is not a passive
static thing that we get automatically, it
is a moving dynamic life. We need to
keep on believing in Him
3. At the cross, Jesus fulfilled the law of
God the Father with His own sacrifice,
and dispensed God’s grace to those who
believe in Him through His death
