Why Is My Newly Seasoned Humidor Losing Humidity?
1. Why Is My Newly Seasoned Humidor Losing Humidity?
In order to make sure that your cigars have the best flavor and aroma, you will need to understand
how your cigar humidor works and make sure you take the right steps to keep it working properly.
There are some things that many people may misconstrue as something going wrong, but instead, it
is simply just how the cigar humidor works. For example, when you have a newly seasoned cigar
humidor, when you place cigars in it, chances are, you will see a very big humidity drop. What
causes this? Is it a problem? Is the cigar humidor no longer working? These are all questions that
may run through your head.
Chances are, if you have not been using a humidor, your cigars will be dry. Because of this, when
you place them in a humid environment, they will immediately begin soaking up the humidity around
them. They will do this until they are more saturated. That means, if you have just seasoned your
humidor and it is reading 70%, you could see a drop down to 60% or less when you place the cigars
within it. This will happen when your cigars are dry.
Is there a way you can avoid this? There are a few things you can do. First of all, if you know your
humidor is newly seasoned, then do not place dry cigars in it. These cigars will cause a humidity
drop. If all of your cigars are dry, then you will just need to practice patience. Once you have placed
the cigars in the humidor and the humidity drops, wait a few days. Then, recharge your humidor.
You should notice that the humidity drop does not continue. This is because once the cigars are no
longer dry, they will not continue to pull from the humidity levels and they will stay at a stable level.
One thing you can do to avoid the humidity drop will be to add the cigars a couple at a time.
Completely filling a newly seasoned humidor with dry cigars will guarantee a humidity drop. Adding
a couple of cigars every few days will help you avoid this drastic drop. If you do this and you see that
the humidity is dropping, you may need to let the humidor sit for a few days and then recharge it.
When you are new to the cigar hobby, so many things can seem like they are something going
wrong. However, a humidity drop in a newly seasoned humidor does not indicate this. Instead, it
simply means that you are adding dry cigars to a newly seasoned cigar humidor. After you handle
this issue, your humidor should have no other problems.
