The term “Mentor” comes from Greek mythology….
Phases Features of each phase
Planning • getting acquainted
• exploring reasons for wanting to be in a mentoring relationship
• clarifying expectations within the relationship
Initiating • negotiating and agreeing on learning goals, content and process
• overcoming awkwardness and getting beyond first impressions
• determining preferred learning styles
• committing to a plan for addressing mentoring goals
Facilitating • comfort level reached - the “real work” of mentoring takes place
Transitioning • preparing for closure through celebration of successes
(towards • reflecting on experiences
closure) • acknowledging and redefining a transition in the relationship

2 Share information that is based on facts but may be sensitive
3 Share information that reflects your thoughts, feelings and values
4 Share information about sensitive personal issues
5 Share information that is very personal or intimate about yourself
or someone else
