7. Prof. Patricia Mace-Leonard
Introduction
A goal is a personal commitment to achieve something
Goals act as roadmaps to the future in terms of what a person
intends to achieve
Goals provide a specific road map which should guide people to
achieve
They provide the direction where a person should move
Types of goals
Goals can be either;
Short term
Medium term
8. Long term
Short term goals could relate to those that should be achieved
within a shorter time like getting a degree while long term goals
could be getting married
Smart Goals
Goals should be smart in the sense that they must be;
Specific in order for them to be easily executed
Measurable for easy evaluation
Attainable so that one does not get frustrated as he or she
pursues them
Relialistic –They should make sense (Peter 2009)
Timely –to be achieved within a time line
9. Short term goals
Short term goals are those which would take a shorter time
They can be achieved quickly
They can be easily executed because they do not require much
time and efforts
They can act as supporters of the long term goals
Long term goals
Long term goals take longer time to achieve
They can be made of short term goals which have been
successful been followed
An example of a long term goal is building a successful career
(Daniel 2009)
Others could be loosing weight or starting a family
They require much time and efforts
10. Education goals
Education goals can be both long term and short term
The short term part of education goals is passing exams
The long term part is graduating from university and building a
career
These goals are defined by the duration in schools
Resources
The resources that are required include time, money and health
The budget include school fees and time for reading
The cost of books and boarding depending on where education
will take place is crucial (Miriam 2009)
There is also need to invest in career guidance for marketability
11. Conclusions
All goals can be achieved so long as there focus and
determination
All goals must be SMART
Goals should be well defined
It requires the same amount of energy to be successful as it does
to be unsuccessful.
One needs goals in order to succeed.
