School Life / Night School / If Not Now, When?
1. School Life Jake Polonsky
Representation – This film is about youth, and one innocent boy who
struggles at school due to only having one friend who is slightly
rebellious and bunks off. The film represents the problems the boy
faces and how he just want some answers, which he eventually finds
out. The boy is represented as a bit of a geek who no body really pays
attention to.
Institution – This short film was produced by an independent
filmmaker called Jake Polonsky, and was filmed in London.
Values – Dialogue is used which helps communicate to the viewer
what is going on. There are also a lot of close up shots of Stanley’s
face to show how he reacts to certain situations and what his emotion
towards it is, which also helps the viewer to receive the message.
Audience – This film is aimed at young males who can relate to
Stanley, who may be lonely or being bullied.
Language – Realism is represented accurately as an original school is
used, and they are all wearing school uniforms which identifies that
they are all equal and they are all students, except the teachers who
wear smartwear and are seen as more superior. Stanley looks well
turned out and smart, which represents his character well, where as
the bully is more scruffy looking.
2. Ideology – The preferred reading of the film could possibly be that
there’s no guidelines to life, look after yourself even if other people
choose to ignore or pick on you.
Narrative – There is simple continuity, and a real flow to the film from
beginning to end which keeps young viewers interested, and doesn’t
let their mind wander.
Genre - This is a Teen Drama as it is set in a school, and confronts
the issue of bullying.
Night School By Ben Soper
Representation – This short film represents on rebellious male who is
drinking and laughing, and a rather vunerable and naïve girl who
break into an abandoned school at night.
There is a red and blue lighting theme, only when they are inside the
school, the red light could be seen to represent love and lust as the
couple are fooling around. On the other hand it could be portraying
danger and excitement.
3. Overall I think that the film is representing relationships and going into
the unknown.
Institution – A Digiplus project. Made with support of the UK Film
Council New Cinema Fund and the National Lottery through Scottish
Screen.
Values – This film is very abstract and unconventional due to the
lighting effects, and lack of dialogue. The representation of intimacy
could be the directors view.
Audience – Could come under an umbrella of different audiences. My
first instinct was that it was aimed at youth’s as the 2 characters seem
to come under that sub culture. However due to its artistic feel I
believe maybe some adults may be interested also.
Language – The mise-en-scene connotes intimacy as the two are
alone in the darkness together, however as I said before the red could
be seen to portray love. There is rarely any dialogue in the film,
however there is evidence of a foley artist as there are a lot of sound
effects adding to the intensity of the drama.
Ideology – The preferred reading of the director is very abstract,
there is a possibility that it has been mediated so that it is Ben Soper’s
view of love and intimacy. They have planned this romantic setting,
but it does not turn out as they may have planned.
Narrative –
Genre – Teen Drama
If Not Now, When? by Akash Lockmun & Nilesh Bell-
Gorsia
4. Representation – This short film is a representation of ethnic youth
in a working class estate and how one boy wishes to fulfill his
ambitions of escaping urban violence, and use his talent to become a
footballer.
Right from the beginning the protagonist (Daniel) is represented as a
typical teenager, as his sister has to force him to wake up and he
avoids questions and affection from his parents, however considering
the estate he is from Daniel is generally a kind hearted kid.
The boys who attack Daniel are represented in an effective way, which
you can identify by their hooded tracksuits and “slang” language, to be
typical thugs.
Institution – Paper Mannequin Productions. Two Asian born directors,
aiming to highlight socially poignant stories to British film.
Values – There are a lot of close up and medium shots of the
protagonist to monitor his feelings and emotions towards situations.
There is also non-diagetic sound in which Daniels friends describe his
life in the build up to the tragedy.
Audience – This short film is most likely to be aimed at male youths
(teenagers) who can relate to the working class background and are
involved in gangs. All characters are around 16 years old so the
audience will be able to relate to them.
Language – The mise-en-scene is a real set, on a real estate which
adds the the drama. The clothing in which the characters wear allows
you to identify what sub culture the characters are from, eg ; the
thugs who attack Daniel are wearing tracksuits with hoods up, and you
instantly stereotype them.
5. Ideology - As both directors are form ethnic backgrounds the
preferred reading could be seen as the difficulty in staying out of urban
violence and committing yourself to something you are passionate
about, which in Daniels case is football. The directors may also be able
to relate to the protagonist as they are both of an ethnic minority, and
could have experienced this kind of violence first hand.
Narrative – The film starts with Daniels sister waking him up and
insisting that he has to go to football. It then shows him downstair
with his family, it is clear that him and his family get along as he is
joking around with his father. From this he rushes out the door on his
way to football training. He bumps into a few of his friends on the
estate kicking a football around and takes the opportunity to show off
laughing and joking with them. This is when the non-diagetic sound is
introduced and a voiceover starts talking about Daniels life in the past
tense, which disillusions the viewer slightly.
At football training Daniel is portrayed as cocky as he teases his friend.
As they walk home together Daniel shows his kind and compassionate
side as he hold his friends bag and walks him home. When he is by
himself he is approached by the youths and makes a run for it,
however they catch him and stab Daniel in the side. The girl he met
previously appears and trys to call for help, showing that Daniel has
people who care for him. Several times throughout the film we can
hear the voiceover referring to Daniel as a past tense.
Genre - Teen Drama portraying the urban lifestyle.
