2. Michel Gondry was born on the 8th May 1963 in
Versaillers and is a French film director,
screenwriter and producer. His career began with
the importance he felt on emotion as much of his
inspiration came from the film Le voyage.
He is famous for his creative visual style and
distinctive use of mise en scene. In 2004 he won an
Academy Award for the Bets Original screenplay as
one of the writers of the film Eternal Sunshine of
the Spotless Mind which is often ranked one of the
greatest films of the 2000s.
Other films that Gondry has made consists of the
surrealistic science fantasy comedy The Science of
Sleep, the comedy-drama Be Kind Rewind, the
superhero action comedy The Green Hornet and
the romantic drama Mood Indigo.
Gondry is also well known for his music video
collaborations with artist such as The Chemical
Brothers, Bjork and The White Stripes.
3. Gondry has produced many different types of films such as
narrative films, short films and documentaries. Most of his
popular films are from the narrative category but are also
most of his newest work. All of his films have a
postmodernist theme within them and portray many
different concepts.
Most of the film is
told as flashback
which links very well
to postmodernism,
Puff (Rhys Ifans)
testifies to Congress,
Lila Jute (Patricia
Arquette) tells her
story to the police,
while a dead Nathan
Bronfman (Tim
Robbins) addresses
an unseen audience
in the netherworld.
Eternal Sunshine of he spotes
mind: The emotionally
withdrawn Joel Barish and the
wild free-spirit Clementine
Kruczynski begin a relationship on
a Long Island Rail Road train from
Montauk, New York. The couple
are almost immediately drawn to
each other despite their
drastically different personalities.
Although they do not realize it at
the time, Joel and Clementine
are, in fact, former lovers, now
separated after having spent two
years together. Much of the film
takes place in Joel's mind which is
very postmodernism. As his
memories are erased, he tries to
avoid the erasing effects of the
procedure by hiding Clementine
in remote parts of his
unconscious.
Mood Indigo: Colin has a very pleasant life he is rich, he loves the food
which his cook (Nicolas) makes, he loves his pianocktail (contraction of
piano and cocktail, a word invented by Vian) and his friend Chick. One
day while having lunch with Chick, Chick tells him that he met a girl
named Alise with whom he has a common passion with. The writer
Jean-Sol Partre (a spoonerism of Jean-Paul Sartre who was Boris Vian's
friend). Colin meets Chloe at a party Chick invited him to. They fall in
love, marry, but Chloe becomes ill during their honeymoon. As time
passes, Chloe's condition deteriorates while the relationship between
Chick and Alise turns sour.
4. Distinctive features that re-occur in each of his music videos. One
technique that Gondry uses which brings a zany approach to quite a lot of
hos music videos are props and then editing them for effect. Gondry like to
creates a pastiche when producing music videos. Another technique that
he uses is the loop effect which is used in the music video by kylie
Minogue called ‘come into my world’ in this video the loop creates an
recurring contents.
Gondry’s work are always high concept videos and his best work combines
new technology with a homemade DIY aesthetic. Examples of this are
music videos such as: Chemical Brothers ‘Let Forever Be’, Bjork ‘Declare
Independence’ and White Sprits ‘ The Hardest Button to Button’.
