With this volume, first in a series, Tecno
makes a return to publishing original works
on design. Concept Book is a collec-
tion which deeply explores the workplace,
design research and contemporary society.
It’s a series that Tecno wants to share with
all professionals, designers and whomever
simply loves industrial design, demonstra-
ting that in an open source world, progress
must be available to everyone.
Concept Book, analizzano temi e sugges-

The creative office represents
the actuality of the modern
workplace, now valued more as
a “place” for sharing experiences
and training, than just a “space”.
This is just the first of a series of
premises – collected in this book
– that gave birth to “beta”, the
evolutive office furniture system
designed by Pierandrei Associati
for Tecno.
L’ufficio creativo rappresenta l’attualità
dell’evoluzione dell’ufficio, ora più
importante come “luogo” per la condivi-
sione di esperienze e la formazione che
non come “spazio” fisico. Questa è solo
la prima di una serie di premesse –
raccolte in questo libro – che ha dato
vita a “beta”, il sistema di arredo
evolutivo per ufficio, progettato da
Pierandrei Associati per Tecno.

over a completely new page in terms of
aesthetics, value and function.
Nel 2008, Tecno ha deciso di fare
qualcosa di completamente nuovo
per il mondo dell’ufficio creativo; una
pagina nuova in termini d’estetica,

6. They say the only thing that stays the same is change.
Regardless of place or situation, our lives are fast and
ever-changing and the things that we choose to fill
them with, now more than ever before, must keep up or
quickly become obsolete.
We believe every product has to be able to evolve with its
user. For this we made a proposal, generated by injecting
genes of mutation and adaptation into the Tecno DNA,
with the aim of building a completely new paradigm for
furniture systems in the creative workplace; beta.
Whereas the launch of a new product usually marks the
end of a long journey, this time we find ourselves merely
at the beginning. Thus, we’ve chosen to share our expe-
riences so far with this book, and would like for you to
consider it as an open invitation to join us on this journey.
Welcome to unopuntozero.

cammino.

8. intro | the brief from Tecno 13
contemporaneo, inteso come
“fabbrica creativa”.
soluzioni ambientalmente sostenibili
e un nuovo rapporto con clienti e
professionisti. Hanno chiesto un
approccio completamente nuovo al
design di prodotto che noi abbiamo
inteso semplicemente come:
facciamo qualcosa di innovativo.

from Tecno
Tecno has always been devoted to
quality and innovation. It is this stead-
fast dedication more than anything
else that has been the hallmark of the
company; characteristics that Tecno’s
Management wanted to maintain while
defining a proposal specifically for the
contemporary office, intended as a
“creative farm”.
Their brief included the application of
new materials and technology, product
sustainability and a new relationship
with clients and professionals. They
asked for a completely new approach
to the design we interpreted simply as:
let’s do something revolutionary.

Come al solito non siamo partiti col
proporre un nuovo prodotto, ma
facendo una analisi delle condizioni
socio-culturali in cui sarebbe stato

Alcune parti di questa ricerca sono
state riportate in questo libro sotto
nostri occhi.

As is our method, we did not start by
proposing a new product but with an
analysis of the socio-cultural conditions
in which it would be placed.
Parts of this research are highlighted
here as Join The Evolution – a
reference to the all-inclusive and rapidly
evolving world of work that revealed
itself to us.
13. What will the future office look
like? Will technological improve-
ments lead to the disappearance
of the office as we know it today?
Will there even be a need for office
furniture?
To answer these questions and
more, we considered trends, new
behaviour, the active role of
prosumers, and more. Everywhere,
we detected a constant condition
of living and working in beta: an
indefinite state of adaptation and
flexibility to change, as evident
in the two main themes that we
explored: The creative office and
the role of Nature & technology in
the office.

Come sarà l’ufficio del futuro?
I progressi tecnologici porteranno
alla scomparsa dell’ufficio come lo
conosciamo oggi? Ci sarà ancora
necessità di mobili per ufficio?
Per rispondere a queste domande,
abbiamo analizzato trends, comporta-
menti, il ruolo attivo del consumatore
e altri temi sociali. Ovunque abbiamo
rilevato la costante condizione di vivere
e lavorare in beta: uno stato d’estrema
disponibilità al cambiamento.
In particolare abbiamo approfondito

lavoro creativo?
Molti credono che la creatività sia
una “qualità” misteriosa e scono-
sciuta. Per altri è uno stile di vita.
Abbiamo cercato di definire quali
fossero i gusti dei creativi – nostri
futuri utilizzatori – e come rispon-
dere al meglio alle loro necessità.
the
creative office
What does it mean to be a creative?
Why and how do they do what they
do? What defines the environments
that they work in?
Most people consider creativity to be a
mysterious and unkown quantity. For
others, it’s a way of life. We set out to
define what makes these people – our
future customers – tick, and how we
could best serve their needs.
15. Creatives are tasked with making things that must
stand out, not blend in, and this description usually
applies to the creatives themselves as well. They have
a passion for their jobs, and want to work in an envi-
ronment that reflects that, allowing them to practice
it as freely as possible. They are well-informed and
tech-savvy prosumers who are asked to exhibit both
the ability to think big, and the realism to make their
ideas come to life — on time and within budget.

ziarsi e generalmente devono garantire maggior requi-
accomunano l’ufficio domestico e quello istituzionale.
spazio ufficio.
Creative business environments themselves
must stand out, and generally have more
requirements than normal workplaces.
They must be flexible, and inspiring as
well – attributes of both home offices and
corporate workplaces.
The need for interaction is a key element,
as is the need for personalization, both
in terms of individual work areas and the
corporate image or cultural identity of the
office space.

21. intro | nature & technology in the office 39
I creativi preferiscono spazi reattivi
in cui l’ispirazione viene anche dal
bilanciamento di elementi naturali e
tecnologici.
Abbiamo esplorato i due aspetti non
solo in termini estetici o di funzione,
ma anche come possibili modelli per
costruire un sistema efficiente.
Piuttosto che considerarli separata-
mente, abbiamo indagato come
i due elementi coesistano senza
distinzioni apparenti.
nature &
technology
in the office
Creatives seek responsive spaces in
which inspiration can also be provided
by the healthy combination of natural
and technical elements.
We explored these two aspects not
only in terms of aesthetic or function,
but also as possible models for how to
build an effective system.
Rather than consider each one separate
from the other, we looked at how they
could co-exist as seamlessly as possible.
22. Secondo Kevin Kelly, direttore
esecutivo della rivista “Wired”,
l’insieme di telefoni, computer e
server in rete costituiscono la più
efficiente e affidabile macchina
mai costruita, che non ha mai
subito uno stop. Per dare un’idea
basti dire che ci sono più di 100
miliardi di contatti al giorno, un
consumo del 5% dell’energia
elettrica globale e più di 246
exabytes di dati.
Kelly chiama questa macchina
“the One”.
He calls this machine “the One”.
According to Kevin Kelly,
executive editor of the
magazine “Wired”, all
networked mobiles,
computers and servers are
costituting the most
reliable machine ever
made, with zero down
time, over 100 billion clicks
a day, 5% of the global
electric energy consumed
and 246 exabytes
stored on line.
“the one”
intro | nature & technology in the office 4140 intro | nature & technology in the office
23. Human beings, with their feelings,
emotions and irrational behavior, are
the “natural” extension of this machine.
As a result, our offices – the places in
which we spend most of our day – are
the platforms on which the two
components interact.
According to this vision, “Going green”
represents the need of re-appropriation
of our spaces, beyond the use of green
metaphor or a modern “feng-shui”
approach to human related spaces. It’s
a way of establishing a new relation-
ship with technology; more usable and
“friendly” with a constant attention to
sensorial features. It’s a way of integra-
ting natural logic into technology to de-
fine a new paradigm: the technonatural.
L’essere umano, coi suoi senti-
menti, le sue emozioni e i suoi
comportamenti irrazionali è parte
di questa macchina e ne rap-
presenta l’estensione “naturale”.
Di conseguenza l’ufficio, ovvero
dove passiamo la maggior parte
della giornata, è il luogo in cui
uomo e macchina interagiscono.
Secondo questa interpretazione,
“pensare verde” rappresenta il bi-
sogno di ri-appropriarsi dei propri
spazi, oltre la metafora ambien-
talista o le moderne interpreta-
zioni del “feng shui”. E’ un modo
per stabilire una nuova relazione
con la tecnologia, più facile da
utilizzare ed amichevole, facendo
attenzione agli aspetti sensoriali.
E’ una maniera di cercare di inclu-
dere nella tecnologia le logiche
naturali, per definire un nuovo
paradigma: il “tecno-naturale”.
setting the stage
intro | nature & technology in the office 4342 intro | nature & technology in the office
rudimentali cervelli binari.
Nature can be technical, just as technology can
be natural. Beyond serving as a source of inspi-
ration for many architects and designers, nature
is rich with mathematical constructs that allow
it to create and replicate complex structures.
Such is the case of Theo Jansen, a Dutch artist
and kinetic sculptor, who demonstrates that it is
possible to build life-like, plastic, self-sufficient
organisms, complete with proprietary walking
systems and rudimentary binary brains.

30. intro | defining scenarios 57
Per riuscire a soddisfare i requisiti
dell’ufficio di oggi e di domani,
abbiamo elaborato alcune analisi
a partire dai risultati della ricerca
svolta. Queste analisi hanno dato
vita ad alcuni scenari, qui intesi
come possibili panorami di sviluppo
prodotto di arredo ufficio.
Tutti gli scenari sono stati presen-
tati sotto forma di storie, che, con
un po’ di ironia, raccontano la vita
quotidiana di un creativo in diverse
situazioni lavorative, nella Milano
del 2015, con lo sfondo dell’Expo
Internazionale.
Due di questi scenari – Greenter-
mingle e Working in ß – ancora una
volta incentrati sul mix fra natura e
tecnologia, hanno ispirato il nostro
prodotto e sono riassunti nelle
pagine a seguire.
defining
scenarios
In order to meet office requirements
of today and tomorrow, we elaborated
our extensive research by creating
scenarios, intended as possible frame-
works for future workplaces.
Each scenario took the form of a short
story, telling – with a bit of irony – the
everyday life of a creative in different
situations, set in Milan 2015 with the
International Expo as a backdrop.
Two of them – Greentermingle and
Working in ß – inspired our proposal
and are summarized here.
31. Milan is a successful example of
an industrial city turned “green
city”. Parks and gardens are the
new piazzas, all public transpor-
tation rely on electric or hydrogen
vehicles, and police use horses or
Segway’s to travel around inside
the “Ring”: the new green belt
surrounding the city, closed to
vehicles and a favorite meeting
point for lunch-time joggers.
The backlash against big busines-
ses since the global financial crisis
of 2008 has led to governments
supporting the lower working class
and implementing taxation systems
on consumption rather than sala-
ries and spending. Sustainability
and eco-friendliness are now the
name of the game for these com-
panies, also reflected in the belief
that productivity lies in employees’
positive state of mind and flexible,
non-hierarchical structures and
work habits. Technology is ubiqui-
tous and easy-to-use.
Companies now focus on local
units, merging corporate features
customized with local and per-
sonal interests. Work environments
feature natural light, fresh air and
outside views: “inside-outside”
meeting areas located in spacious
greenhouse-like buildings.
Smaller meetings can take place
anywhere within the central open-
air garden around which personal
hot-desks are arranged, where
everyone is free to choose their
preferred working place every
morning when they arrive.
verde”.
all’ora di pranzo.
e locali. Gli ambienti di lavoro hanno luce
naturale, aria fresca e vista sull’esterno: spazi
spaziosi edifici simili a serre.
Le riunioni più piccole si svolgono dovunque
nel grande giardino centrale, attorno al quale
sono sistemati gli “hot desk” personali a
cui tutti sono liberi di accedere liberamente
quando arrivano alla mattina.

32. The market is in the hands of a
few international corporations that,
now more than ever, are fighting
each other over the scarce resource
of competent employees. Con-
sequently, current salaries allow
employees to enjoy higher quality
lifestyles as well as the many com-
pany benefits. It is for these reason
that working for a corporation is a
status symbol.
In return, employees dedicate
everything to their jobs. Creative
employees spend 80% of their
time working individually, with all
meetings performed virtually, so as
not to lose time, even with others
in the same building. “Moving is
time and time is money”.
Workers want their state-of-the-art
flat screen TV’s linked directly to the
company server in order to be con-
stantly updated on what’s going
on in the office, even while they’re
watching the Late Night Show.
The company controls and displays
the efficiency of every worker,
discouraging unnecessary personal
interaction and even suggesting
when to eat and sleep.
Intense competition is encouraged
and employees believe in this way
of life: the majority of them don’t
consider it as a heavy duty, though
they choose to take performance-
enhancing drugs, which have be-
come morally accepted by society.
i migliori professionisti.
I creativi trascorrono l’80%
del loro tempo lavorando individualmente,
facendo riunioni in video conferenza, per
non perdere tempo, anche con i colleghi
che lavorano nello stesso edificio. “Spostarsi
loro show preferito.
La società controlla e rende noti i rendimenti
dei lavoratori scoraggiando l’interazione per-
sonale in ufficio e suggerendo anche quando
mangiare e dormire.

siamo trovati a trattare queste entità
come elementi dinamici e non statici:
ci siamo ritrovati a riconfigurare lo

as dynamic quantities, due to the
condition of living and working in beta.
Our project became an exploration of
how to reshape space, adapt to

The creative office represents the
actuality of workplace history. The
Digital Revolution has radically changed
work habits, by reducing repetitive
tasks and giving more value to the
office as a place for sharing experiences
and training.
More than a “space” where employees
gather, the office of today must
provide a complex “place”, where
different functions can be performed:
a contemporary “agora”.
L’ufficio creativo rappresenta
l’attualità nella storia dell’ufficio. La
rivoluzione digitale ha radicalmente
cambiato le abitudini di lavoro, ridu-
cendo le mansioni ripetitive e dando
maggior valore all’ufficio come
“luogo” complesso dove differenti
funzioni possono essere svolte: una
forma contemporanea di “agora”.

47. Contemporary office buildings are icons
of the 20th
century. Just think of the New
York skyline: skyscrapers were symbols
of economic power, monuments to
corporations.
Even today, such buildings continue to
serve as visual manifestations of growth,
particularly in emerging economies.
Very often, these offices were based on
a model where maximum efficiency was
paramount and the workplace was
intended as a “working machine”.
Employees were nothing more than
units of production.
Gli edifici ad ufficio, nati soprat-
tutto per l’esigenza di gestire
la produzione industriale e
l’aumento della moderna burocra-
zia, sono le icone del 20° secolo.
Ci basti pensare allo skyline di New
York: i grattacieli ad ufficio erano
simbolo di potere economico
e veri e propri monumenti alle
corporations.
Anche oggi, tali edifici continua-
no a servire come manifestazioni
visive di sviluppo, in particolare
nelle economie emergenti.
Molto spesso questi uffici erano
impostati sul modello taylorista,
dove regnava l’idea di massima
efficienza e l’ufficio non era altro
che una “macchina per lavorare”,
in cui i dipendenti erano conside-
rati unità di produzione.

48. Many historical events contributed to
change this vision of the office, modifying
the perception of the employee, no
longer a “mechanical component” but
a “sensible extension” of the working
process, complete with personal identity,
needs and opinions. The computer
especially, took over the task of carrying
out low-skill, alienating and repetitive jobs.
This led to the increased value of the
workforce, allowing companies to attract
and retain more creative people.
The design of office spaces also changed
as a result, looking for the perfect balance
between working efficiency, physical
comfort and psychological support.
Molti fattori storici contribuirono
a cambiare radicalmente questa
visione dell’ufficio, innestando

space…
It used to be that every space in the office
was dedicated to a particular function, such
as meeting rooms, kitchen and food areas,
and most of all, individual work cubicles.
Now, on the other hand, we find that
spaces no longer have specific functions,
so that a given space can be used for any
purpose deemed most appropriate or
convenient at any given time.
These spaces, often contaminated with
domestic elements, allow creative work-
places in particular to exist without walls
– both figurative and physical – and give
employees the ability to transition easily
between solo and group activities, and the
flexibility to work in whichever way suits
them best.
Nell’ufficio tradizionale ogni spazio
aveva una sua funzione, dalle sale
riunioni, alla caffetteria, fino agli
spazi di lavoro individuali (si pensi
al modello a cubicolo).
Al contrario nei modelli attuali
più avanzati che abbiamo analiz-
zato abbiamo riscontrato che gli
spazi hanno perso la loro funzione
specifica e possono essere utiliz-
zati nelle maniere più diverse a
seconda delle necessità.
Questi spazi, spesso contaminati
con elementi di arredo domestico,
permettono all’ufficio creativo
di riuscire a configurarsi senza
pareti - figurate o reali - dando agli
impiegati la possibilità di modulare
il grado di interattività con gli altri
e la flessibilità di lavorare nel modo
che preferiscono.

50. The freedom to move away from one’s
desk without losing access to voice and
data communication enables office workers
to perform in a variety of collaborative and
informal settings, such as break-out and
soft seating areas, cafes and restaurants.
“Soft work”, intended as constraint-free
rather than less intensive space, is the
leading concept, and are the informal areas
preferred by intellectual staff.
These (once) ancillary enclaves are now
the clichés of contemporary office design,
shifting the question from “how much
space do we need?” (geometrical) to “what
kind of space do we need?” (emotional).
La libertà di spostarsi dalla
propria scrivania, senza perdere
l’accesso alle connessioni dati e
voce, permette al lavoratore di
svolgere la propria attività in vari
contesti collaborativi e informali,
quali area relax ed attesa, caffè
e ristoranti. E’ il concetto di “Soft
work”, non nel senso che sia
meno intenso, ma perché libero
dai vincoli dello spazio, essendo
queste aree le preferite dai
lavoratori intellettuali, già abitua-
ti ad un agire informale.
Queste “enclavi” (una volta)
accessorie sono diventate il cliché
dell’office design contempora-
neo, spostando la domanda da
“quanto spazio ho bisogno?”

problema) a “di quale tipo di

51. The need for creativity forces us to
rethink not only the office space but the
objects as well.
Desk dimensions, for instance, stayed
more or less the same even if we went
from using typewriters to wireless
laptops, regardless of the need to fit
huge monitors or adjust to new ways of
working. Office furniture will play a ma-
jor role in this sense, being able to grant
the necessary flexibility, the potential
to accommodate future technological
implementations and the capability to
integrate all personal belongings.
Il bisogno d’attività creativa
nell’ufficio porta a ripensare non
solo lo spazio di lavoro, ma anche
gli oggetti.
Le dimensioni delle scrivanie, per
esempio, sono rimaste più o
meno le stesse, anche se si è
passati dalla macchina da scrivere
ai portatili wireless, indipendente-
mente dalla necessità di ospitare
sul piano un enorme monitor o
di accogliere un nuovo modo di
lavorare. I sistemi di arredo per
l’ufficio hanno un ruolo fonda-

in grado di garantire la neces-
saria flessibilità, la capacità di
prevedere future implementazioni
tecnologiche e la capacità di inte-
grarsi a tutti i beni personali.

72. Se la tecnologia ci permette di
lavorare ovunque… perché dovrem-
mo avere ancora bisogno di andare
in ufficio? La risposta a questa
domanda è fortemente legata ai
comportamenti umani e alla neces-
sità di condividere conoscenze ed
esperienze nel lavoro di gruppo
all’interno di uno spazio fisico.
Di conseguenza il luogo di lavoro
contemporaneo è un’entità di natura
molto complessa dove aspetti
razionali ed emozionali si mescolano.
the
emotional office
If technology allows us to work any-
where… then why do we still need to
go to the office? The reply to this
question is strongly related to human
behavior and the need to share knowl-
edge and experiences within teamwork
in a physical space.
As a result, contemporary workplaces
are complex entities formed by a mix of
rational and emotional aspects.

terizzano i nostri tempi: ogni convinzione
tradizionale (buono-cattivo, on-off) cessa
Individuals’ identities, once shaped by personal
origins, are now molded by careers,
values and lifestyles.
Moreover this consideration has to be combined
with the strong social dynamics, which are
characterizing our times: any conventional belief
(good-bad, on-off) ceases to be an axiom as it
is replaced by a “fuzzy logic” in order also to
welcome in the same place people of different
culture, sex and age. As a consequence, the office
cannot provide an abstract way of work to be ap-
plied to employees, but has to adapt to workers’
lifestyles and behaviors, being highly customizable
and supporting changes and culture sharing.

76. A peculiarity of the creative office is to be intended as the
place of knowledge sharing where solo tasks and shared
activities are fully interrelated.
Individual activities although usually done alone, may include
moments of sharing – discussing or exchanging info. Group
activities can be very permanent or temporary, with very low
interaction (presentations) or high interaction (brainstorming
sessions). The traditional division between personal desk and
meeting room now needs to be integrated with spaces
suitable for group activities of two or three people. An evident
trend is the inclusion of such facilities into office common
areas such as cafeterias, waiting areas and smoking corners.
o smoking corners all’interno dei layout uffici.

85. an interaction platform
Another essential element of beta is the personal desk, which
has been re-thought for the creative office. We basically work
on a desk whose dimensions were defined to host huge CRT
monitors. Part of that surface is under-utilised and we decided
to reshape it to make the desk the basic unit of interactivity.
Since we spend more and more time meeting people at our
table around a computer screen, or a document, we purpose-
fully shaped the desk to welcome small informal meetings. As a
result the desk becomes a hybrid between a meeting table and
a personal workplace, able to store personal belongings as well.

role of “natural selectors”. We’d like to, in effect reclassify
“clients” as “partners”.
In particular for everyday use products such as office
furniture, this process of natural selection is what allows
them to perpetually improve and update themselves to
stay relevant to the needs of you, the consumer.
Ci piacerebbe, in effetti, ri-classificare i “clienti”
come “partner”.

sustainability
Sustainability is no longer an option in designing a product: it
is a responsibility towards future generations and a moral
requirement. On the other hand every “produce less – consume
less” strategy has been shown to be unattractive to consu-
mers. We think that matching manufacturer and prosumer in
an open-source problem-solving platform could be a power-
ful tool to improve the eco-friendliness of products, especially
when combined with the ability of the web and social blogs to
bring virtual propositions into the real world.

beta è un toolkit per lavorare che
unisce tecnologia avanzata e mate-

beta is a toolkit for work that merges
cutting edge technology and recyclable
materials with a natural logic which
allows the entire system to evolve over
time. Supported by an accurate prod-
uct service system, provided by Tecno,
every single element of beta could be
easily updated and has a variety of ver-

110. beta accessories
Around the backbone and desks, the beta
landscape consists of accessories which range
from customizable personal elements to tools
to enhance performance within the office.
performance lavorative nell’ufficio.

112. beta recyclability
Every single part of which beta is composed
has been conceived to be made out of a single
material and easily recyclable. All parts can also
be effortlessly replaced in case of damage or at
the request of the user.
materici e facilmente riciclabili. Ogni parte può essere
sostituita in caso di danneggiamento o su richiesta dell’utente.

product service system
Many proposals of recyclability often fail for
lack of the appropriate services to help the user
re-process used elements. For this reason we
specifically designed a service department for
beta, whose goal is to replace and collect used
or broken parts and take care of recycling.

brand evolution
Currently, Tecno stands out from
its competitors for its “client-
oriented” service. We think this
capability could be taken to a
higher level, making Tecno a point
of reference in the office furniture
sector as a user-oriented company.
settore arredo ufficio, particolarmente
attenta all’utente.

reshape.

evolve.
With this volume, first in a series, Tecno
makes a return to publishing original works
on design. Concept Book is a collec-
tion which deeply explores the workplace,
design research and contemporary society.
It’s a series that Tecno wants to share with
all professionals, designers and whomever
simply loves industrial design, demonstra-
ting that in an open source world, progress
must be available to everyone.
Concept Book, analizzano temi e sugges-
This book is free and you can get your own
copy by contacting Tecno.
The next Concept Book – TCB02 –
will be available from April 2010. Check
www.tecnospa.com regularly for updates.

The creative office represents
the actuality of the modern
workplace, now valued more as
a “place” for sharing experiences
and training, than just a “space”.
This is just the first of a series of
premises – collected in this book
– that gave birth to “beta”, the
evolutive office furniture system
designed by Pierandrei Associati
for Tecno.
L’ufficio creativo rappresenta l’attualità
dell’evoluzione dell’ufficio, ora più
importante come “luogo” per la condivi-
sione di esperienze e la formazione che
non come “spazio” fisico. Questa è solo
la prima di una serie di premesse –
raccolte in questo libro – che ha dato
vita a “beta”, il sistema di arredo
evolutivo per ufficio, progettato da
Pierandrei Associati per Tecno.
