2. Coughing is the body's way of removing foreign
material or mucus from the lungs and upper
airway passages or of reacting to an irritated
airway.
3. Recent upper airway infections, such as the common
cold and flu, can cause coughs. Other common causes
include:
ACE inhibitors (medications used to control blood
pressure)
Allergic rhinosinusitis (inflammation of the nose or
sinuses)
Asthma
Cigarette smoking
Exposure to secondhand smoke
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Lung disease such as bronchiectasis, interstitial lung
disease, or tumors
Lung infections such as pneumonia or acute
bronchitis
4. A cough can be classified by its duration,
character, quality, and timing. The duration
can be either acute (of sudden onset) if it is
present less than three weeks, subacute if it
is present between three and eight weeks,
and chronic when lasting longer than eight
weeks. A cough can be non-productive (dry)
or productive (when sputum is coughed up).
5. Thesymptoms are high fever with stiff
muscles of the body, sneezing, nasal
congestion, and sore throat.
6. If left untreated, excessive coughing leads to
certain effects.

Headache

7. Don't smoke and stay away from secondhand
smoke.
If you have seasonal allergies like hay fever,
stay indoors during days when airborne
allergens are high.
If you have allergies year round, cover your
pillows and mattress with dust mite covers,
use an air purifier, and avoid pets and other
triggers.
