The thought of exercise can be off-putting for most people. Families today
are so set in their ways and so busy doing tons of other activities it may be
hard finding the time to fit in exercise for an individual, let alone the entire
family.
It has been proven that when an entire family takes to exercising together
they are more likely to continue with an exercise regimen. Why is this? It’s
the team mentality that takes over. Healthy families who go it together are
more likely to encourage the other members when something becomes
difficult to do or interest gets lost. This rallying effort makes exercising as a
family work.
Here are seven tips for getting your family up and on their way to a
better, healthier lifestyle:
1. Competition – A good healthy competition is a great way to get
everyone motivated. You can make it a fun so it doesn’t even seem like
exercise. Create obstacle courses in your backyard and have a prize
available for the one who gets through it faster. Try incorporating your
favorite activity like baseball or soccer and have a contest to see you get
the most goals or hits.
2. Video Games – The Wii has a terrific program called Wii Fit, not only will
this get your couch potatoes off of the couch it can also make your family
laugh like crazy. If you have ever played the Wii and any of it’s games you
know how physical it can be and to be honest those games make you look
silly. This is a great way to not only laugh at yourself, but also laugh
together as a family.
3. Walk – The easiest form of exercise is walking. Set a time each day to
walk around your neighborhood as a family. The best time is right after
meals so you can burn off the calories and have some quality time with
your family as well. You could even make it a game. Before you set out o
your walk, set up a list things you need to find while on your walk, like a

scavenger hunt. Kids will love this idea and will be so engrossed in finding
the items they won’t even realize they are exercising.
4. Explore – Take the entire clan to a local park and explore the area as a
family. Take the dog and give him a good workout as well. Bring a frisbee
or a ball for both you and the dog and be sure to investigate your
surroundings. If there are woods around the park, go for a hike.
5. Bike Rides – This is the perfect alternative to driving somewhere, not
only will it save you money on gas, you will get much needed exercise.
6. Dance – Shake your booties to your favorite songs. This works well for
younger children because they tend to love music. Your older children
may be embarrassed to dance, but once they see everyone is doing it they
may just join in.
7. Old-Fashioned Games – A simple game of tag or hide and seek will get
your children moving in no time. Kids love games, so this is the perfect way
to get them moving without a second thought.
It’s really all about getting your family up and moving together. Once they
see how fun the activities are, the more they will want to do them all the
time.
