1. Evaluation
MESH contacted us and asked our Media
Class to create a promotional video for
their project "Cutting Hedge" where they
cut gardens and green spaces for persons
who are unable to do so themselves. This
fell into the category of our unit "Corporate
Videos" and helped us communicate with MESH to find out their idea of what they
wanted to do and what suited the image they wanted to portray. Firstly, Julie
contacted the college through Jane Palmer and asked us about doing the project
and everyone had different roles to film at MESH. Julie, Justin from GYBC, Tim
Inger from East Coast College and Emma, a councillor from GYBC. The finished
video would be shown at a yearly event hosted by GBYC with volunteers, charity
workers and around 40 local MP’s attend. Julie gave us 2 weeks to complete.
My role within our filming process was to capture 'behind the
scenes' footage with two others, this meant trying to capture every
detail we could about the interviews and filming on all fronts. This
helped me be more confident with a camera and to be able to
appear professional always, providing more courage with working
with clients. We then filmed a review interview where some
members of our media class described what they did and how they
were challenged such as being, it helped the video. After that we
edited our group part of the videos on Adobe PremierePro.
The most enjoyable part of this task was
editing it all together and allowing
myself to learn more about MESH and
what it does for the community. This
provided me with a chance to improve
editing-wise and shuffle/play around
with the right sequence to create
MESH’s story in the best way and our
part to play in its journey.
Also, I enjoyed finding the best angles of the students interviews, which was limited
due to amount of camera’s we had around the interviewees.

2. We interviewed classmates asked the
following questions:
- How are you helping to create the video
- What are you taking out of it?
- How have you found working with a
client?
- Do you feel more confident with working
in a team?
We took adult and child release forms from everyone we
interviewed to make sure the students had all the correct
permissions.
The most challenging part of this project was the fact we had only two weeks and
we only visited MESH twice. The limited amount of filming time did not give us the
best quality footage (footage was
shaky, blurry and /or too bright), but he
had to try to fix/salvage it as much as
possible using effects like stabilising
and also colour correction. We needed
to fit in as much information as
possible and as many 'good' clear
videos as possible. Editing was one of
the more complicated aspects as we
needed to organise the footage, audio and footage together, plus it needed to be
coherent and synced, we had some trouble with it making any sense at the start,
but with the help of our teacher sorted it out. Another challenge was filming ‘Behind
the scenes’ where we could not film certain people so certain shots which could
have been good we were unable to use as we did not have people permission to
film them, we worked our way around it by filming from a distance and trying to
crop them out of shot. This helped me keep to deadlines however and get things
done in a quicker time frame.
If I were to improve it, I would
make sure I got closer and
even video shots. Our tripod
was being used and we did not
have a spare, so we shot
freehand which had many
good aspects as it gave us free
rein, however some shots
came out shaky which we tried
to solve by using the stabilizer effect, next time I would have brought a second

3. tripod. I would ask interviewees to repeat the question every time they give an
answer as it became harder to understand what they were talking about.
Overall, working with MESH has made me make time for deadlines and stick to the
task at hand. Editing helped me understand
the community more, but also become more
confident with the camera. Working with an
outside company made me push myself and
keep focused. I am able to widen my
knowledge and confidence in working with
others, helping me to work well and keep
professional which prepares me for the real film industry and working with future
clients. This helped me keep to deadlines and get things done in a quicker time
frame. It has also improved my editing ability including colour correction, this will be
used continuously in the future as it’s an essential necessity when working with
editing. MESH helped me to see sides of the community I've never seen before and
has provided me with skill I will continuously use.
