GBYC managesall things inGreatYarmouth fromCouncil Tax to RubbishClean
upsto Parkingto Tourism (whichisimportantaswe are a seaside county) and
the Community.They have three neighbourhoodofficeswhichincludesMESH
witha teamwho organises andhelpsoutinthe local community,listentotheir
ideasandstart communityprojects.

MESH isa neighbourhoodprogramme thatisrunin
Gorleston.Theyassistlocals andallowthemtobe
more resilientandlessreliantonservices,whichgive
themcore skills. Theyworkwithavarietyof
organisationsandpartnerstobringgood servicesto
the community.âWe buildupona sense of community
by supportinggroupsandactivities.âThislinkstoCuttingHedge asitisone of theirprojectsstarted
and whatthe whole classassignmentisabout. MESH hostseventswithinthe communitytoallow
anyone andeveryone tosocialiseandbetterthe area,evenssuchasyouthgroups,familydays,
feminismtalks andalongwiththattheyhave ayearlymeetupwithGBYC to discusseventsandhow
to betterthe community.

CuttingHedge wasstartedwhena residentwasissuedaneviction
warningnotice due toan overrun garden and an ideawasplantedto
helpthe resident,alongside withCommunityRoots,VoluntaryNorfolk
and Neighbourhoods ThatWork,theycreated CuttingHedge,a
voluntarygroupwhichhelpsresidentsorthe communitywith
overgrowngardens (orgreenareas) whotraintheirvolunteers and
provide themwithcore verbal andpractical skills suchasidentifying
planta,usinggardeningtoolsandworkingwithothers.Thishelps
otherto leadon to findjobsforthemselves,itgivesthemreal life
applicationskillslike socialising,all the whilehelpingthe community
as well.
Thiswas the mainfocusfor our projectand allowedusto show they
wayMESH buildconnectionswiththe communitythroughEastNorfolkSixthFormCollege. Notonly
didwe helpthem,buttheyhelped ustocreate our veryowncorporate videomade myFilmand TV
Students.

Our college became involvedwithMESHand theirCuttingHedge
projectbyJulie Woodsgettingintocontactwithour communityand
progressionadviser, Jane Palmer.Juliehadhercontact as theyhad
2. previouslyworkedtogether.Inregards,of the projectitself,the mediastudentshelpedcreate the
videobyfirstlytalkingtoJulie abouthow she wantedMESHto be portrayedandhow the students
couldhelp portrayMESH ina positive light.We plannedoutwheretofilmandhada deadlineto
complete,MESHcontinuedtocollaborate withEastNorfolkbycontinuouslyinvitingustothe
showingof the completedprojectandintroducingustothe board of volunteers andMPâsinthe
room.
