2. 1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
• My trailer follows and uses the forms and
conventions set by other film trailers of the genre.
• Which involves establishing a character and what
their average day to day life is like, then showing
an event that changes their life, or at least
unbalances it for a period of time, and the effects
of that event.
3. • However, these factors are all shown in a minimalistic way, as it
is the trailer’s job to create excitement for the film, and to make
people want to see it.
• This is present in the trailer for ‘Cloverfield’, as it shows the
normality of the character’s world crumble from one event.
4. • Another convention we have followed is that the events shown in the trailer
are not necessarily in the order in which they appear in the film trailer
itself, this is because if a trailer was completely linear, the story and plot of
the film would ne given away, causing people to not feel the need to see the
film, as they already know what will happen.
• A good example of this is the trailer for ‘The Road’, a film released in
2009, during this trailer, many events and scenes are shown, however it is
very easy to say that the events are not in sequence, as the trailer shows a
child being taken away from his father in one shot, then in the next they are
together as if it never happened.
5. • To use the film trailer of ‘Cloverfield’ again, and the trailer of
‘Chronicle’, a pattern within these two trailers is that they appear
to be shot in a ‘home movie’ style, and look as if they are
footage found on someone’s personal camera.
• we too followed this pattern as we believe that this style of
filming fits the story we want to tell, in that it seems more
personal to the characters and comes across as being grittier
then when films are shot in the standard way.
