Acute stress disorder (ASD) is characterized by
acute stress reactions that may occur in the initial
month after a person is exposed to a traumatic
event (threatened death, serious injury, or sexual
violation).
Occurs within 3 days and maximum of 4 weeks.

Symptoms:
A subjective sense of numbing, detachment, or
absence of emotional responsiveness
A reduction in awareness of his or her
surroundings (e.g., “being in a daze”)

Depersonalization
Dissociative amnesia (i.e., inability to recall an
important aspect of the trauma)
