The Threats of Inactivity
Being a couch potato – or the lack of physical inactivity – can be as deadly as
smoking. Reports published on Lancet, a medical and specialty online
journal, showed that the lack of exercise is responsible for 10% of premature
deaths around the world. In addition, it resulted in more than 5.3 million
deaths because of related health conditions such as heart disease, breast
and colon cancer, and Type 2 diabetes.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that more
than 33.3% of Americans are now obese, and risks are higher in women.
According to the American Journal of Medicine, more of them aren’t
engaging in physical activities during their free time anymore. From 19% in
1994 to 52% in 2010, researchers find it alarming that women aged 18 to 39
have a higher body mass index (BMI) than men.
