There are three main types of chemical bonds: ionic bonds, covalent bonds, and metallic bonds. Ionic bonds form between positive and negative ions through the transfer of electrons. Covalent bonds form when atoms share valence electrons to achieve stable electron configurations. Metallic bonds occur via delocalized "sea of electrons" that allows metallic atoms to bond together. Chemical bonds allow atoms to become stable through achieving full outer electron shells.
