The simple present tense in English is
used to describe an action that is regular,
true or normal.
4. 1. For repeated or regular actions in
the present time period.
• I take the bus to the school.
• The bus to Barranquilla leaves every hour.
• My son sleeps eight hours every night during the
week.
5. 2. For facts.
• The President of Colombia lives in The Nariño
Palace
• A cat has four legs.
• We come from Canada.
6. 3. For habits.
• I get up early every day.
• Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.
• They travel to their country house every weekend.
7. 4. For things that are always /
generally true.
• It rains a lot in winter.
• The Queen of England lives in Buckingham
Palace.
• They speak English at work.
8. VERB CONJUGATION AND SPELLING

We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).
In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.
The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that
verb:
9. 1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -
X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person.
• go – goes We go to class / Anyi goes to the park
• catch – catches You catch the ball / Oscar catches the ball
• wash – washes I wash clothes / Saray washes the dishes
• kiss – kisses I kiss my son / Ivan kisses her mother
• fix – fixes You fix my hair / She fixes your hair
• buzz – buzzes I buzz you in a minute/ your phone buzzes all the time
10. 2. For verbs that end in consonant + Y, we
remove the Y and add -IES.
• marry – marries My sister marries today
• study – studies Ana Sofía studies hard
• carry – carries David carries a bag
• worry – worries Luis worries a lot
11. For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just
add -S.
• play – plays I play the guitar/ Laura plays Chess
• enjoy – enjoys I enjoy playing/ Daniel enjoys
watching tv
• say – says You say hello /Julio says he is happy
