This presentation explains what eduTrac is, it's mission and what makes eduTrac different from other student information systems (SIS) that are already out there in the wild.
2. Mission Statement
eduTrac's mission statement is threefold:
eduTrac seeks to provide a quality product that
helps meet any educational institution's need.
Become the go to SIS in the world
And build a strong and lasting
relationship/partnership will all clients
3. So, What is an SIS?
As wikipedia states, “An SIS is a software
application for education establishments to
manage student data.”
Below are examples of data collected:
Enrollment
Courses
Grades
Disciplinary Actions
4. So, Why Another SIS?
Great question. eduTrac seeks to solve three
issues that currently exist.
Issue #1: Scalability
Issue #2: Written in a proprietary language
Issue #3: Lack of extensions and/or API
5. Scalability
There are only a couple of well known PHP
powered student information systems out there.
But they are not built for large universities with
very robust computing needs. Therefore, for
those who opt for it, they can use eduTrac's
cloud data store.
6. What is a Data Store?
It is a secured place where all your SIS data is
stored. Institutions who opt for this service
instead of using their own database server, can
rest assured that there will be no bottlenecks
when their data reaches into the tens of
thousands.
7. Proprietary Language
Software written in a proprietary language is not
available to the general public. What this
means for an institution's programmer is that
he/she must rely solely on the software
company for help and guidance. On the other
hand, when using a software written in PHP, a
programmer has the web, a host of
communities and books to turn to for help.
8. Lack of Extensions & API
For the majority of these systems, they don't fit
every institutions model of how they do things.
So that means hacking the core code. With
extensions, all you need to do is write one to
add any missing functionality you need. Having
an API also allows the system to
connect/communicate with a host of other
systems/software (i.e. Moodle, eFront, etc.).
9. Current State of eduTrac
eduTrac is currently in the planning stage and the
database structure is currently in the works.
The plan is to role out a beta by the beginning
of next year. If you would like to follow
eduTrac's development, please subscribe to
updates via the website @ http://edutrac.org/.
