Editor's Notes
Hello. This is Dr. Arbetter, principal at Walker Elementary School. I am pleased to share with you an update on our progress on our 2nd Achievement Strategy for the month of December.
Achievement Strategy #2 reads: If 2nd-5th grade students support all answers with evidence through reading, writing, or discussion in at least 90 % of instructional activities, and questions at the divergent and evaluative levels are asked of students daily in each content, then we will increase the percentage of students that score 80% or higher on eValuate reading and mathematics.
This graph shows the grade level breakdown of the percentage of students proficient in reading each month this year. As you can see, every grade increased from November. Furthermore, 2nd and 3rd grades have more students proficient than they’ve had in the past 4 years at this time.
On this graph, you can see Walker’s proficiency rate in reading for the last 5 years. As you can see, We had more students proficient this December than we’ve had in the past 5 years.
In math, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades had more students proficient in December than they had in November of this year. While the proficiency rate for 2nd grade decreased slightly from November to December on the eValuate test, we had a higher percentage of 2nd graders proficient this December than we have had for the last 4 years.
Our overall math proficiency rate on eValuate continues to increase and we had the highest proficiency rate since 2008. As you have seen from our progress on eValuate, we believe our current strategy of having students support all answers with evidence through reading, writing, or discussion and asking questions at the divergent and evaluative levels is working. Therefore, we will continue this strategy into 2nd semester.Next week, I plan to share with you our progress on our 3rd Achievement Strategy.
