2. Hi! I’m Emily Pittman from
Clarenville, Newfoundland & Labrador. Please

3. I wish to live in Arts House
because ….
… I want to be surrounded by people who love
to artistically express themselves. I have always
been drawn to artistic communities, because of
the unique people and the freedom to be you. I
have spent my entire life in a small, close knit
community and I love it. This small residence
seems perfect to be able to have a similar
experience, and the family atmosphere will be
just what I need to feel at home in a new
province.
4. I wish to live in Arts House
because ….
… my interests in the arts are quite broad and
include music, theatre and visual arts. LLC Arts
House, will allow me to be involved in a
community. I am looking forward to meeting the
broad range of people who also have a love of
the arts, in addition to the people I will meet
through my degree program. I believe this will
give me a richer experience over the four years I
will attend the University of Guelph.
5. Campus and residence tour:
In August of 2011, I had the opportunity to visit
the University of Guelph on the day before
students were arriving. Although staff were
obviously very busy getting ready for the arrival
of students, they took the time to answer my
questions and show me around. I visited Arts
House, and fell in love with the campus and
concept of the Living Learning Centre. This
directly impacted my decision to apply to U of G.
6. Art
I have been interested in the arts my entire
life, not only for my own enjoyment, but being
able to share it with others. My interests range
from fine arts to music to theatre.
Since a young child I was always drawing and
painting, and I have never stopped. I enjoy
painting with oil and water paint, as well as
charcoal sketching. On the weekends and school
breaks I have taken multiple art workshops, which
I thoroughly enjoy. Also, I have taught art camps
which enabled me to share my love for creativity
7. Music is one of my biggest sources of joy!
• I play piano, guitar, tenor saxophone and
flute.
• In addition to solo vocal performances, I
perform with several high school and
community choirs.
• Also a member of CHS Jazz Band, CHS
Concert Band and Saxophone Quartet
8. Musical Theatre
Performed in many musical theatre
performances for Music Festivals and
School Performances.
9. I enjoy living an active life:
• Lifeguard, swim team
coach, swim instructor
• Cross – country skier;
Downhill Ski Instructor
• Kayaking, Water sports
• Yoga, Hiking, Jogging
10. Friends and Fun!
Some of my other interests
include:
- Hanging out with my
friends
- Watching movies
- Challenging new
rollercoasters
I’m an avid book reader and
love checking out libraries
and bookstores for new
11. Representing and promoting Art
House to the campus community
Since Art House is a small residence, it may sometimes get
overlooked by people applying to the University of Guelph. I
think the promotion of the LLC is important to raise interest in
the LLC experience concept. There are many activities that could
be organised to make people more aware of this section of
campus. For example, Art House could invite sections of other
residences to participate in some of our functions, such as a
movie night or entertainment night, so they could experience the
atmosphere of the building and the community spirit of people
living in it. In winter, the House could create creative snow
sculptures to bring attention to the residence as other campus
members walk past it, or residents could paint banners to hang
around campus promoting LLC.
12. Other ideas…
Art House residents could promote the residence
by working with the university staff and the
residence council to organize an Art House art
auction to raise money for a charity, such as a
food bank. I have been to an art auction and I
have really enjoyed it, so I think that this would
not only allow Art House to get the attention of
the campus community, but showcase talent
from inside the residence as well, while
supporting a good cause.
13. Even more ideas…
Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter are
great tools to promote activities at Art House.
Residents could create a webpage and
communicate regularly though text and photos to
promote the LLC to the wider campus
community and to potential new students. This
can be very effective since a high percentage of
university students have smart phones
and are constantly connected online.
14. Events and programs …
I would definitely love to participate in and help
organize fun events at Arts House. I love being
involved and sharing experiences with people.
Some ideas include:
• a themed party, where people dress up as the
subjects of famous pieces of art or artist.
• organizing a road trips to various art
galleries, such as the Art Gallery of Ontario.
While some might take experiences like this
for granted, coming from a small town, I
would really appreciate such opportunities.
15. Bohemian Nights (BoHo Nights)
Performance
I enjoy performing and look forward to
participating in BoHo nights as a way to meet
people and to get to know my fellow
residence mates. I probably would take the
opportunity to share something from my
Newfoundland culture which could be a
traditional song or a
brief comedy skit.

LLC is a unique
experience and one
that I hope to get to
enjoy. Thank you for
your consideration!
