2. ANOTHER BUSINESS GATEWAY
OPENS TO FOREIGN INVESTORS
IN SOUTH AFRICA, WITH THE
ANNOUNCEMENT, DURING THE
BRICS SUMMIT, OF A MULTI-BILLION
RAND MEGA INDUSTRIAL
INTEGRATED TOWNSHIP (MIIT)
DEVELOPMENT
Dube TradePort Corporation, a Schedule 3C Provincial (KwaZulu-Natal) Public Entity and Action
Group, a 40-year-old, highly diversifi ed business conglomerate from India, together announced the
signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 26 March, during the BRICS Summit in Durban, for
the development of a Mega Industrial Integrated Township (MIIT) as part of the aerotropolis project
near Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.
The MIIT is envisioned to be developed on
a 240 hectare site with an investment of
approximately R2 billion. The development
will be undertaken in several phases and will
aim at delivering state-of-the-art industrial
infrastructure, inclusive of industrial
space, commercial space, a logistics hub
comprising truck, bus and container depots,
warehousing facilities, a weigh-bridge
centre, a training institute and a South
African fi rst-of-its-kind industrial retail park.
Both Dube TradePort Corporation and Action
Group envisage that the MIIT will complement
the current TradePort and international
airport, providing easy ‘gateway’ access and
a one-stop-shop approach for, specifi cally
but not exclusively, international investors,
manufacturers and industrialists seeking
to spread their business interests and
associated activities to South Africa.
The development is regarded as an important
step towards effective industrial growth
in South Africa as it would attract further
foreign investment of some R15 to R20
billion into the country and the Province of
KwaZulu-Natal in particular. Such levels of
investment would contribute signifi cantly to
the growth of the region, increase its share
of world trade, play a role in employment
creation, attract modern technologies,
enhance infrastructure, provide benefi ts to
local suppliers and increase benefi ciation of
local products.
