CONSTIPATION
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH),
constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal (GI)
problems, affecting about 42 million people in the U.S. and
28 cr. people in India

CONSTIPATION
Constipation is very common, some people experience chronic constipation that can interfere with their
ability to go about their daily tasks.
Constipation is generally described as having fewer than three bowel movements a week.
Chronic constipation is infrequent bowel movements or difficult passage of stools that persists for
several weeks or longer.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHRONIC CONSTIPATION
 Passing fewer than three stools a week
 Having lumpy or hard stools
 Straining to have bowel movements
 Feeling as though there's a blockage in your rectum that prevents bowel movements
 Feeling as though you can't completely empty the stool from your rectum
 Needing help to empty your rectum, such as using your hands to press on your abdomen and using a
finger to remove stool from your rectum

AETIOLOGY OF CONSTIPATION
Basically, constipation occurs when the muscles of the large intestine are not properly
moving matter through and out of the colon. Slow movement can result in too much
water being absorbed by the colon, causing hard, dry stools.
In general, “normal” bowel movements should be soft and easy to pass, and should
happen daily. However, it is not at all uncommon for people to have painful constipation
and only go a few times a week, or have even less frequent bowel movements (severe
constipation).

FUNCTION OF LARGE INTESTINE
The large intestine has 3 primary functions:
absorbing water and electrolytes.
Producing and absorbing vitamins.
Forming and propelling faces toward the rectum for elimination.
By the time indigestible materials have reached the colon, most nutrients and up
to 90% of the water has been absorbed by the small intestine. The role of the
ascending colon is to absorb the remaining water and other key nutrients from the
indigestible material, solidifying it to form stool. The descending colon stores
faces that will eventually be emptied into the rectum. The sigmoid colon contracts
to increase the pressure inside the colon, causing the stool to move into the
rectum. The rectum holds the faces awaiting elimination by defecation.

LUNGS AND LARGE INTESTINE
Eliminating is related to the concept of letting go. letting go is a quality
affiliated with the lungs and the large intestine. making sure we are keeping
the valuable and are letting go of what is not needed – physically,
emotionally and mentally.
On a physical level, the lungs take care of the relatively esoteric gas – the air.
They are in charge of using the separating the oxygen from the rest so the body
can use it and are eliminating the by-product of the metabolism in the body, the
CO2 – this process has a short cycle and it is repeated many times throughout
the day. The large intestine deals with more substantial material which is what
is left from the food after it is passing through the digestive system which
occurs once a day, eliminates all that is not needed anymore and absorbs back
water and key nutrients. When our body is done extracting the valuable
resources from the air or the food – it is letting go of the waste.

SPLEEN
The Earth element, one of the 5 elements, is
associated with Spleen and its partner organ,
Stomach which are in-charge of digestion.
Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation,
diarrhoea, IBS is all related to the Earth element.
Earth is also responsible for Dampness. The
spleen is incapable of transporting and
transforming body fluids, leading to an
accumulation of excess moisture within the body.
Water retention, hard to lose weight due to water,
sluggishness, brain fog is all due to damp.

LIVER
The Liver is responsible for
maintaining the smooth flow of
energy and blood. This isn’t just in
a physical form, but also
emotionally, helping our emotions
to flow smoothly. Mood swings,
bad moods and anger can come
from unbalanced Liver energy.

of constipation.

HEART
The Fire element manifests in our body through the heart, small intestine, regulates
internal body temperature.. The lungs can lose their ability to expand and contract
fully and easily, resulting in poor oxygenation of the blood, coughing, and nasal
congestion. We may experience sluggish digestion, abdominal pain, and watery
diarrhoea, constipation because the digestive organs lack the heat needed to process
and assimilate nourishment.
Excessive heat can result in painful inflammation of the joints, hypersexuality,
chronic infections, dryness of the lung, inflamed throat and sinus, burning urination.
Affecting the heart, cause anxiety and sleep disturbance. Too much heat dries up our
internal reservoirs and waterways, Excess heat can also dry out the stool and cause
constipation

KIDNEY
Kidney is powerhouse of the body, Its
function is regulating and maintaining
the body’s fluid balance and the
excretion of wastes via the urine. the
kidney is also traditionally understood
to govern other body fluid. Excess
urination and less secretion of intestinal
epithelial fluid may be a cause of
constipation

STRESS
The effects that stress hormones have on the body
can cause constipation. In addition, when a person is
stressed, they are more likely to eat an unhealthful
diet, get less exercise or sleep, or forget to stay
hydrated. These factors can lead to constipation.
Stress may affect the normal healthy bacteria in the
gut. According to an article in the journal Expert
Review of Gastroenterology & Hepatology,
researchers have identified several ways in which
stress can cause constipation

RISK FACTORS
Factors that may increase risk of chronic constipation include.
 Being an older adult.
 Being a woman.
 Being dehydrated.
 Eating a diet that's low in fiber.
 Getting little or no physical activity.
 Taking certain medications, including sedatives.
 pain medications, some antidepressants or medications to lower blood pressure.
 Having a mental health condition such as depression or an eating disorder.

COMPLICATIONS OF CHRONIC CONSTIPATION
 Swollen veins in your anus (haemorrhoids). Straining to
have a bowel movement may cause swelling in the veins in
and around your anus.
 Torn skin in your anus (anal fissure). A large or hard stool
can cause tiny tears in the anus.
 Stool that can't be expelled (faecal impaction). Chronic
constipation may cause an accumulation of hardened stool
that gets stuck in your intestines.
 Intestine that protrudes from the anus (rectal
prolapse). Straining to have a bowel movement can cause a
small amount of the rectum to stretch and protrude from the
anus.

PREVENTION
The following can help you avoid developing chronic constipation.
• Include plenty of high-fibre foods in your diet, including beans, vegetables, fruits, whole grain cereals and bran.
 Eat fewer foods with low amounts of fibre such as processed foods, and dairy and meat products.
 Drink plenty of fluids.
 Deep breathing exercises.
 Stay as active as possible and try to get regular exercise.
 Try to manage stress.
 Don't ignore the urge to pass stool.
 Try to create a regular schedule for bowel movements, especially after a meal.
 Make sure children who begin to eat solid foods get plenty of fibre in their diets.
 Avoid cold and raw food as this will put out the digestive fire and make digestion sluggish.
