In the past, it was very common for children to get chicken pox, so that it
was almost a rite of passage. Usually, the disease is mild, causing an
itchy rash and fever. However, in infants and adults especially,
chickenpox can escalate, giving rise to serious infections and disfiguring
scarring. In the most severe cases, it can even kill.
Luckily, children need not undergo this dangerous “rite of passage” any
longer, due to the development of the chicken pox vaccine. The
treatment inoculates people against chicken pox by introducing a
weakened form of the virus into the body. The immune system “learns”
from that weakened virus how to fight off the disease.
Children get their first dose of the vaccine between 12 and 18 months of
age. Doctors administer the second dose for children between four and
six years of age.
