Future of the Library
“The future of the library is that there is no library: the functions that the
library performs have blown up and are scattered throughout the universe”
Steven J. bell and John Shank – The Blended Librarian
Mike Shatzkin: Within 15 to 20 years the physical library will cease to exist;
patrons will access electronic material online, and the meeting places and
cyberbars will have migrated elsewhere.
Above mentioned scenario may not be that alarming but the challenge
stands.

Why go beyond formal methods?
The 95 Percent Solution: School is not where most Americans learn
most of their science by John H. Falk and Lynn D. Dierking
Recent findings challenge the longstanding belief that the place for
science knowledge acquisition is the classroom.
International comparisons of trends in science knowledge over
lifetimes suggests that much if not most science knowledge is
acquired outside of school. American Scientist: v. 98 (Nov-Dec), 2010

We have a window of opportunity
It is estimated that developed economies and even China will face
shortage of about 40 million highly skilled workers by 2020.
12th Five Year Plan, Volume III Social Sector
Current level of GER (Gross Enrolment Ratio) in India stands at a figure of
18.8%. However this is very low compared to world average of 23.2%,
36.5 % for developing countries and 45% for many developed countries.
N. Sundarrajan, (2013) Achieving Target GER: Is Quantity the only Answer? University News, 51(49)
India’s research output as global share of scientific publication was a
mere 3.5% in 2010 where as china’s share was 21 % in 2007.

DSpace is a digital library system to capture, store, index, preserve
and redistribute the intellectual output of a university’s research faculty
in digital formats. Dspace has been developed jointly by MIT Libraries
and Hewlett-Packard (HP). It is now freely available to research
institutions world-wide as an open source system.
Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital
library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and
publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. It is available for both
Windows and Linux O/S. It requires Perl software to build collections.

Digital library software
Eprints is generic archive software under development by the University
of Southampton. It is intended to create a highly configurable web-based
archive. EPrints primary goal is to be set up as an open archive for
research papers, but it could be easily used for other things such as
images, research data, audio archives anything that can be stored digitally
by making changes in configuration.
Omeka is a free, flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the
display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and
exhibitions.

Digital library software
Invenio software developed by, maintained by, and used at, the CERN Document
Server. It allows you to run your own electronic preprint or digital library server, your
own online library catalogue or a document system on the web. It complies with the
Open Archives Initiative metadata harvesting protocol (OAI-PMH) and uses MARC 21 as
its underlying bibliographic standard. It is a free software issued under GNU-GPL license.
Fedora is an Open-Source digital repository management system based on
the Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora).
The Fedora repository system is open source software licensed under the
Mozilla Public License. It requires Sun Java Software Development Kit, v1.4.
Optionaly one can use MySql or Oracale 9i to create relational databse. It
works both on Windows and Unix versions of O/s.

Digitization is?
Digitization is the process of converting analogue
originals to computer-readable form
Digital imaging and scanning are mechanisms for
capturing a digital picture
A digital image is sampled and mapped as a grid of
squares known as picture elements (pixels)
Digital files use a binary format with a series of ‘1’ and
‘0’, ‘on’ and ‘off, to represent data

Concluding Remarks
For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life.
And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to
miss the future – John F. Kennedy (June 25, 1963)
