Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Online Learning (AVPAAOL)
Job Summary: The Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Online Learning (AVPAAOL)
provides visionary leadership for and rigorous oversight of the University’s efforts to achieve innovative,
high quality teaching and to develop fully and maintain excellence in all online and blended courses and
programs, consistent with the University Mission and priorities. This is a full--‐time, 12--‐month
administrative faculty position that reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA).
Essential Functions
1. Promote distinctive program and curriculum design and innovative teaching throughout the
University.
2. Lead the Center for Teaching and Learningin creating and maintaining a culture of excellent,
innovative teachinggrounded in the Catholicintellectual tradition and the values of the
Congregation of Divine Providence, and universallyreflective of OLLU’s expertise in providing
educational opportunitiesto first-generation Mexican-American and other underserved
populationsof learners.
3. Work with faculty to develop and maintain a highly effective general education curriculum that
optimallypreparesundergraduate studentsfor success and continued service, and that promotes
spiritual, personal, and professional growth.
4. Work with senior leadership and faculty to create, implement, assess and revise a Strategic
Plan for Online and Blended Learning at OLLU that is consistent with the overall University
Strategic Plan.
5. Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer (COO), VPAA, Academic Deans, and faculty
governance to establish, maintain, and communicate appropriate policies and procedures
to ensure academic excellence, accessibility, integrity, and usability for all online and
blended courses and programs.
6. Identify key performance indicators (KPI) for online and blended courses and programs.
Create, maintain, and make available to senior leadership KPI dashboard and reports.
7. Monitor and work with faculty and academic support staff to maintain consistently high rates
of retention and student success in all courses and programs.
8. Review, and advise the VPAA on all online and blended course and program assessments that
are completed by academic units and compiled by the Office of Institutional Research and
Effectiveness.
9. Stay aware of and keep senior leadership informed of regional, state, national and
international trends, opportunities and threats in online learning.
10. Stay aware of, keep senior leadership informed of, and ensure compliance with all SACS
and program accreditation regulations related to online and blended courses and
programs.
11. Work with Communication and Marketing, Enrollment Management, Mission and Ministry,
Information Technology Services, academic support units, Student Life, and Houston and Rio-‐‐
Grande Valley leadership to create and maintain robust, hassle--‐free online learning experiences.
12. Collaborate with the COO, VPAA, Vice President of Enrollment Management, Houston and
Rio Grande Valley campus Directors, Academic Deans, Department Chairs, and faculty to
identify appropriate opportunities for expansion of existing online and blended offerings.
13. Create an optimal online teaching and learning environment through the administration of the
Learning Management System (LMS) on which all courses have a presence and blended and
online courses are hosted.
14. Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the usage of the LMS, other instructional
systems and software, and the Center for Teaching and Learning that reflect the University’s
core values, enable administrative efficiency, reflect careful stewardship of university
resources, and ensure compliance with all laws, regulations, and university policies.

15. Ensure that all OLLUfaculty members are provided with high quality development
opportunitiesthat are reflective of University priorities and values and that empower the
faculty to become highly effective and innovative teachers.
Other Responsibilities:
1. Assist Department Chairs and other academic leadership in recruiting, hiring, and retaining
excellent faculty (full--‐time and adjunct) who are prepared and eager to develop and teach high-‐‐
quality online and blended courses.
2. Lead, supervise, and promote professional development in the Center for Teaching and
Learning staff.
3. Collaborate with stakeholders (including alumni, faculty, corporate friends, etc.) to
identify and/or create innovative, engaging online learning communities that support our
academic programs and/or enhance our academic reputation and reach.
4. Monitor costs and revenue associated with online and blended courses and programs and
report to senior leadership as requested.
5. Collaborate with Information Technology Services to identify and prioritize technology needs
related to teachingand learning, to implement an academic technology request and evaluation
method, and to design and implement appropriate instructional technology training and
documentation.
6. Serves as a member of the academic leadership team and promotescohesiveness, systems
thinking, and collaboration amongteam members.
7. Serves as the Academic Affairs liaison to and Ex-Officio member of Faculty Assembly standing
committees, including Graduate Curriculum Committee and othersas assigned.
8. Behave in ways that are consistent with the University core values of community, integrity, trust
and service.
