Launching a startup - or starting a business - is challenging and is fraught with pitfalls. This is even more so in the midst of a pandemic and a global recession. Roger Royse, partner at the law firm of Haynes and Boone, LLP in Palo Alto, will discus strategies for building and operating a successful business or startup during a recession. Roger will discuss: 1) What should you expect from your vendors, customers and financiers? 2) How can startup founders protect themselves from predatory creditors during a bad economy? 3) What will financing terms look like now? Is startup investment capital even available? 4) What are some tax traps to avoid when working out debt obligations with investors and creditors? 5) Can startups still get federal stimulus grant money or loans? 6) What will venture capital terms look like now? 7) For existing startup companies -- how can you get venture capitalists to step up and continue funding your startup company? 8) How viable is crowdfunding and other alternative sources of funding in 2020? 9) If you lost your job or have been furloughed, how do you get started doing gig work in a gig economy? What are the legal traps and restrictions for gig workers? 10) What other strategies and tactics should entrepreneurs deploy during a downturn? and more! Please come with your questions, comments and scenarios.

The most successful companies are those that can get value and knowledge out of information. We immediately think of Google, Amazon or Microsoft but even a small company has its own data and can access a variety of external information. In this speech we’ll create a use case around a family company that aims at becoming 3.0. So we’ll see how to enhance the corporate data using business intelligence techniques, but also how to use big data technologies to enrich the knowledge, getting data from open data sources, comparing company business with market researches and matching it with socials.

This talk will be about OpenPaas, an open source collaboration platform built by Linagora which provides a complete solution for emails, agenda and contacts management as well as some nice enterprise social network features such as user communities... I will tell you about the progress we made during the past year, but also the technical challenges we faced and what we did to work around them. I'll then talk about the exciting technologies we're using in the product and how we integrate them to provide a rich experience to our users. The last part of the presentation will be focused on some nice side-projects we have at Linagora, most notably an EcmaScript 6 JMAP client library we're developping.

In November 2015 the European Commission officially lunched the European Data Portal http://www.europeandataportal.eu . The mission of the portal is to become the catalogue of all European public data providing them in all official languages of the European Union. The portal is harvesting metadata from heterogeneous open data portals of 28 EU and other 11 European countries. It lists over 580 000 datasets and it is the biggest Open Data portal worldwide. From the techincal perspective, it is the first official Open Data portal implementing the new DCAT Application Profile specification. The portal is the place to find European public data and it is a basis for other innovative services. One of them is Policy Compass https://policycompass.eu. It brings together open public data, social media, e-participation platforms, causal models, and argumentation technology for constructing, sharing, visualizing and debating progress metrics and impacts of policies. Both portals are Open Source. They provide rich APIs and may become a data source for other applications.

Training developer to accessibility is not enough; they need ready-to-use tools. Responsive Design has been the trigger for many web sites refactoring that gave opportunity for accessibility improvement. By the end of 2014 we compared the major market solutions and Bootstrap appeared to be the best. They benefited from a really big support community, a robust and functional framework, open source and of course with a quite good accessibility level. So we decided to use this framework. We studied how to make its accessibility even better and submitted our improvements to the community. That was a good starting point but not enough, we’ve also got some Orange specific components, our brand is not blue and we want to share our work easily with everybody. That’s why we created an open source fork of Bootstrap, called Boosted, providing the best from native Bootstrap and adding up the Orange Brand, some specific components, and an even higher accessibility level.

Software is eating the world and open source licenses are eating software. This leads to the presence of OSS in nearly all the electronic systems we interact with daily, such as communication devices, cars, trains, healthcare systems, entertainment environments. This entails that the quality of the OSS components we use and produce is getting progressively as important as the quality of the air we breathe. One of the OW2 key missions is to continously design and implement a roadmap for enabling quality and trustworhy open source software, through a dedicated platform named SQuAT. This talk will present the status and the future of this platform, its underlying models and tools, and how you can use it for assessing and improving the quality of your project.

AppHub is the European Open Source marketplace. AppHub identifies and positions software components within the Open Cloud Directory to help users find and implement the software outcomes of your projects more easily. Open source software is a powerful enabler for collaborative innovation. However, making the source available does not automatically attract contributors or grant immediate market access. AppHub is designed to provide an distribution channel that addresses these issues, making it easier for open source projects to connect with their potential markets. Essentially, AppHub brings the market to you. This presentation will provide an overview of AppHub and help OW2 project leaders understand how they can participate in, and benefit from, the AppHub marketplace.

Fundamentals of Taxation 2005 – A Forms Approach Solution s Manual PAGE CHAPTER 14DISCUSSION QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS Discussion Questions 1.Discuss the formation of a partnership. Is any gain or loss recognized? Explain? 2. What entity forms are considered partnerships for federal income tax purposes? 3. How does taxation for the corporate form and the partnership form differ? 4. What is the concept of basis? In your discussion, differentiate between outside basis and inside basis. 5. Elaborate on the term basis-in – basis-out. What does that phrase mean in the context of a partnership formation? 6. How can two partners, each with a 50% interest in a partnership, have different amounts of outside basis at the formation of a partnership? Shouldn’t the two partners contribute the same amount to have the same interest? 7. When a partnership receives an asset from a partner, does the partnership ever recognize a gain? What is the basis of the asset in the hands of the partnership after contribution? 8. Discuss the concept of steps into the shoes. Does how this concept pertains to the partnership, the partners, or both? 9. Why would smaller partnerships (and other businesses for that matter) use only the tax basis of accounting, which does not follow GAAP? 10. How is depreciation calculated by the partnership when a partner contributes a business asset? 11. Discuss the concepts of ordinary income and separately stated items concerning partnerships. When must a partnership item of income or loss be separately stated and why? 12. Can a partner have a salary from a partnership? Why? What is a guaranteed payment? 13. Are guaranteed payments treated as an ordinary income items or as separately stated items? 14. Is the Section 179 expense deduction allowed for partnerships? If so, is Section 179 an ordinary income item or a separately stated item? Why? 15. If a partner owns a 20% interest, does that necessarily mean that he or she will receive 20% of the net income from the partnership? Explain? 16. Is partnership income considered self-employment income? If so, how is it calculated? 17. Why must some income and gain items be separately stated in a partnership? 18. Explain why nontaxable income and nondeductible expenses increase or reduce outside basis? 19. When is it mandatory that a partner calculate his or her partner interest basis (outside basis)? What items affect the outside basis of a partner? 20. How does a partner’s share of partnership liabilities affect his or hers outside basis? 21. The general rule is that partners do not recognize any gain when he or she receives a distribution. In what circumstances might a partner recognize a gain on a current distribution? 22. Define precontribution gain? What causes a partner to recognize it? 23. Describe the rules concerning the basis of property distributed to a partner. How does the concept of “basis-in, basis-out” apply to part.
