Advantages and disadvantages composition revision

  1. 1. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES COMPOSITION REVISION
  2. 2. FIRST PARAGRAPH: THE INTRODUCTION • Start the essay with a general introduction on the topic, e.g. by referring to the actual situation. • Don’t make it too long, or too short. • Don’t introduce advantages or disadvantages yet.
  3. 3. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF BEING FAMOUS Nowadays many magazines tell us about the lives of famous people. It seems everybody is interested in them, and that most people would like to be famous. However, there are advantages and disadvantages.
  4. 4. SECOND PARAGRAPH: THE ADVANTAGES • List two or three advantages and explain them. • Remember to use connectors, and/or to give examples to clarify meaning.
  5. 5. One of the main advantages of being famous is probably the lifestyle it gives you. Most famous people are very rich and can afford big houses with swimming pools, and expensive cars. Moreover, they spend a lot of time travelling, visiting different countries, and staying in luxurious hotels.
  6. 6. THIRD PARAGRAPH: THE DISADVANTAGES • List two or three disadvantages and explain them. • Remember to use connectors, and/or to give examples to clarify meaning.
  7. 7. However, there are disadvantages. Every time famous people go out they are surrounded by fans and paparazzi. As a result, it is very difficult for them to have a normal private life. Besides, they often can’t spend much time at home as they have to travel so much, for example if they are making a film or doing a concert tour.
  8. 8. FOURTH PARAGRAPH: THE CONCLUSION • In the conclusion you summarize the content of the essay and give your opinion. • Be careful not to repeat what you have said before using the same vocabulary and structures. • Be careful not to add extra information that you should have included in the previous two paragraphs.
  9. 9. On balance, I think it is probably easier to be happy if you are not famous, in spite of all the money famous people have.
  10. 10. FINAL POINTS TO REMEMBER • Use a formal style (no contractions, colloquial expressions, exclamation marks, etc.) • Use linking expressions.
