PerouAssignment 4
Bio
• Born in Newick in East Sussex as Ralph John Perou, Perou graduated
from the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL) and went on to work at
Click Studios, where he learnt the basis of his photography. Whilst
working at Click, he met some of the world’s leading photographers. He
started shooting for bands like Elcka (a friend’s band) and editorial clients
such as ‘Time Out’, ‘Skin Two’ and ‘Dazed and Confused’ magazine. He has
also been on the other side of the camera and done occasional modelling
jobs. He has walked the catwalk for Commes des Garçons in 1995, Sonja
Nuttall in 1996, Evisu in 2000 and Vivienne Westwood’s Tie Campaign S/S
in 2005 as well as the album cover for Cyclefly’s Generation Sap. He has
had multiple exhibitions from 1991 to 2008 such as Torture Garden,
Bosozoku and a Private View by Pike and Perou, and he has worked on tv
and directed a documentary following Marilyn Manson on tour.
• This photo has a very soft,
whimsical feel to it with a sense
of immaturity due to the
purposefully poor drawing. As it
is a portrait, I feel it is of a
comedian or someone along those
lines, as the childish nature of
the photograph reflects the
personality of the subject.
• The lighting appears to be
natural lighting coming from a
window to the right of the
subject, leaving a very light
shadow on the face but not strong
enough to be a focus, as any
shadows are on minor features of
the picture.
• This photo has a very dramatic
sense to it, due to it being in
black and white and the bold,
contrasting shadows against the
white of the subject’s face. It
clearly has religious ties and is
very powerful due to the subject’s
expression which displays fear
and worry.
• The photo has been created by
using a very strong light to the
left of the subject, in the
direction of where the model is
looking, leaving little light to
illuminate the background. The
black and white filter emphasises
the shadows caused by the sharp
lighting and I feel is an artistic
choice.
