Comment 1 The Christian concept of imago dei is described by Shelly & Miller (2006) as man being created in the image of God, granting dignity and honor to everyone while separating mankind from everything else on earth. This is important to healthcare because human lives depend on healthcare. By focusing the attention on preserving life and granting each person dignity, we value each human’s life over and above everything else on earth, as God intended. While postmodernism would hold a humans life less valuable since that philosophy believes the humans are simply another organism on earth, with the same value as a rock (Shelly &, 2006). This belief is relevant because if we are all viewed as imago dei, then there are moral consequences if we choose to treat humans as equal to all other animals in creation. As Shelly & Miller (2006) asserts, men may eat other animals in the world, but according to the Christian concept of imago dei, we were placed here as separate and superior beings and it is not appropriate to eat another human being, shoot a person for an illness or disability, and while we are free to choose, it is our responsibility to treat the sick and dying with dignity and respect with hope for a positive outcome. Medicine and Medical Technology in Biblical Perspective · As discussed in Chapter 1, in the Christian worldview, the ultimate foundation for determining the right, the good, and the just is the triune God. The triune God is the ultimate foundation of reality, including ethics. Moral goodness and justice are derived from the very character of God. God is holy and set apart (Leviticus 20:26, English Standard Version), so people are to live lives of holiness and goodness. God is love (1 John 4:10–11), and so love is a virtue and an essential principle for life and relationships. Because God is just toward people (Deuteronomy 15:15), they are to act justly towards the poor, the sick, and the disenfranchised. People are to live in covenant faithfulness to their spouses and to honor covenantal relationships in their professions (e.g., the doctor-patient and nurse-patient relationship) because God is a covenant God, faithful to his people, even when they were unfaithful (Hosea 1–3; Malachi 2:10,14). As discussed previously, all ethics flow from one’s worldview and its basic assumptions about ultimate reality. One’s view of human nature, the fundamental problem of humanity, the solution to that problem, and the ultimate direction and goal of history will determine personal ethics. Every worldview embodies these elements in some sense, and the substance of these elemental conceptions influences everyone’s moral vision. These assumptions deeply influence what one believes to be the right, the good, and the just, and they will direct, whether consciously or subconsciously, one’s individual daily choices and actions. The Christian worldview, which is the focus of this text, is founded on the biblical narrative or story. This narrative is often summarized as the story of the creation, fall, redemption, and restoration of human beings, along with the entire created order (see Figure 3.1). This section will examine how key concepts within this narrative, such as sin, righteousness, and Shalom, provide a framework by which the Christian worldview understands the concepts of health and disease and life and death, as well as provides guiding norms for how one should approach healing and care-giving, the ethical use of medicine and new medical technologies, and justice in health care. Figure 3.1 Biblical Narrative and Christian Worldview Creation The Christian narrative of creation is essential for both Christian theology and for Christian ethics. At the foundation of the biblical narrative is the Christian God who is the creator of everything that exists (Genesis 1–2). Since I published a letter in 1996, critisising the use of preprinted assessment sheet, allowing nurses to work like doctors in the NHS(UK), the number of deaths, complications and wrong doings has escalated to catastrophic proportions. Doctors who continue to work are suffering in silence. The ones who raised concern were systamatically harassed, bullied and ostracised. The institutions, associations, nursing council and the Royal Colleges and the WMA have ignored their duty to protect fellow human. I do not think we can claim to be members of a "Noble Profession" if we allow this un-ethical medical practice continues. The General Medical Has not only ignored their duty to protect fellow human but also discriminated doctors passing out from Non-European medical schools by allowing nurses to work like doctors. This institution has failed to define the word "Doctor" and has inflicted pain and suffering to doctors who defend their moral and ethical duty. Our profession and our lives are threatened by emerging and antibiotic resistant infections. We must join hands and defend our profession. By allowing nurses with no medical school training or skill to clinically examine patients to diagnose and prescribe drugs, we have failed to protect fellow human who trust our profession. This is substandard, un-ethical medical practice that has brought us shame must be stopped. Please leave your comments and criticise me if I am wrong. There has not been a murder there in 6 years, because of an operation Anderton supervises where three pre-cognitive humans (“pre-cogs”) drift in a flotation tank and have their brain waves tapped by computers. These brain waves can pick up thoughts of premeditated murders, so the police can be warned and arrest the would-be perpetrators before they can kill (hence the “Department of Pre-Crime”). Of course, it is not as easy as this, because the pre-cogs can provide only the time and date of the murder, the murderer’s name, and the victim’s name—the other facts can be learned only by clues derived from the various images generated by the pre-cogs around the time of murder. The film is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick. The pre-crime police strategy is going to expand nationwide, and there is personal and bureaucratic jealousy toward Anderton and the pre-crime unit. The movie focuses on a rare disagreement among the “pre-cogs” over a pending murder, and one of the pre- cogs apparently files a minority report disagreeing with the others. Normally, the minority report is disregarded, but the twist is that Anderton himself becomes a target for arrest as a predicted killer, and he is apparently warned of this by one of the pre- cogs. Anderton then is chased by police, assisted by one of the pre-cogs named Agatha (Samatha Morton), and the futuristic police pursuit and search is interesting and compelling. For example, everyone is subject to retina scans, so Anderton has to get an eye transplant to hide his identity while being pursued. The story has several twists, and it raises important issues about the certainty of knowledge and how knowledge should be used. QUESTIONS 1.
