Rebel Without A Cause
The film Rebel without a Cause masterfully juxtaposes two characters that have seemingly opposite
conditions: Jim Stark and Judy. Of the many differences that these two characters share, their
contrasting family structures are perhaps the most interesting aspect of the movie. Rebel without a
Cause displays a snapshot of how the family structure of the 1950s functioned with Judy's family. To
counter this, the movie depicts the Stark family, which is a direct opposite of the accepted family
structure at the time. Making a social commentary on this topic of the household ranking could have
been one of the main intentions of the movie's director, Nicholas Ray, in producing the film. Even
though the 1950s were just over 60 years ago, the social...show more content...
In making the movie's main themes teen estrangement and paternal issues, the filmmakers, either
intentionally or not, created a film that shows how the average family functioned in the 1950s
with Judy's family. Whether or not we realize it, almost all forms of art depict in some way the
time period in which they were created, from the works of the Shakespeare to the paintings of
Pablo Picasso. And, while Rebel without a Cause may not stack up to those pieces of art, it
certainly does share in their ability to reflect the day in age in which it was

plan to talk about пѓ friendship Friendship is represented in both the 1967 novel 'The Outsiders' by
S.E. Hinton and the 1955 film 'Rebel without a Cause" directed by Nicolas Ray. The value
friendship is represented in 'The Outsiders' through the Greasers gang, this includes; Pony boy,
Johnny, Dally, Darry, Soda, Two

without a cause' through Jim Stark, Judy, Plato and Jim's dad. Part 1: –Overview of the what the

Although they are all different ages they all stay friends. They support each other through hard
family times, for example; during the novel. Friendship is especially shown when Ponyboy runs
away to hide with Johnny, so that Johnny don't get into trouble with the police after killing a socs.
Johnny shows that he cares about Ponyboy, but taking him back home to be with his two brothers.
At the end of the novel, friendship is shown by Dally, committing suicide, as he can't handle to live
without Johnny. –How is it conveyed? (refer to language techniques) –How does the context of the
novel affect the way this value or idea is represented This novel was set during the post war period,
this was a time when independence and rebelling against parents and law was more important than
doing the right thing, during these times of independence, and teenagers needed friendship more
than anything else. –What is the author's purpose in representing the value in the way? –Is the novel
making the same point about the value or ideas as the film? If so, how? If it is making a different
point about the value or idea, how is it different? The novel 'the outsiders' is making the same point
about friendship as the film 'rebel without a cause' as they both convey the idea that during this
time, friendship was very important to all teenagers as they are more independent and spend more
time away from their families, and aren't as close.

Rebel Without a Cause
One of the major themes that are presented throughout the whole entire movie is the dysfunctional
relationship between one of the characters and their fathers. The movie portrays father figures as
problematic which then shape the actions and the characters themselves as the movie progresses. We
can see all three dynamics of the father figure presented through Jim, Judy, and Plato. Through Jim,
the father figure that he is presented with is a father who is weak allows himself to be walked on
by JimВЎВЇs mother and grandmother. JudyВЎВЇs father, on the other hand, is quite the opposite
of JimВЎВЇs father in that he is the overbearing, masculine, and insensitive. Lastly, we see the
absence of a...show more content...
Now, Jim sees this in his father and swears to himself that he will never be the ВЎВ°chickenВЎВ±
his father is. This leads to the decisions he makes in the movie, for example, going to the
ВЎВ°chickenВЎВ± run to uphold his honor. He begins to take charge of hisown life, being that
strong man himself, going to the mansion with Judy to live on their own in order to not become like
his father.
The audience is then presented with the complete opposite, through the relationship Judy has with
her father. We can see that the father is masculine and insensitive through the way he treats Judy.
When Judy tries to show her love to her father by giving him a kiss on the cheek, he goes on to
slap her on the face and tells her girls her age are not supposed to do things like that. Then we see
the father pick up the son and give him all the attention completely ignoring Judy. Some may say that
JudyВЎВЇs father is a chauvinist. The fatherВЎВЇs actions then explain why Judy became involved
with Buzz and his crew. It can be argued that because at home she is ignored by her father, she
seeks for attention through a manly figure, that being Buzz. After Buzz dies, however, she then
moves into a relationship with Jim. What attracts her to Jim is the fact that he is strong man, yet is
sensitive and sincere at the same time. He gives her what she has been striving for and looking for
from her dad and that fact makes her

Rebel Without a Cause
1955 marked the year in which Nicholas Ray's film Rebel Without a Cause was released as the
latest Hollywood success. With its revolutionary acting and modern style, Rebel Without a Cause
proved to be an ideal example of progressive, contemporary cinema. Amidst these factors is the
intricate screenplay regarding a rebellious adolescent and his troubled relationships with his family
and new found friends. Unfortunately, this was a film that was produced in the mid–1950s, a time
when the self–censorship board in the U.S. did not permit certain political and societal issues to be
addressed in films. As a result, various controversial matters could only be suggested or implied,
opposed to directly dealt with. One such issue that Rebel...show more content...
Fundamentally, point of view and the gaze provide an early establishment of Plato's В‘rebellious'
character as an emerging homosexual.
The framing of this particular scene also manages to accentuate Plato's sexual insecurities, which
could have contributed to his failure to peacefully cope amongst his peers. The sole picture that
Plato has hung in his locker and that the frame is centered upon is one that could most likely be
perceived to be taken of his estranged father. In a fairly indirect manner, Plato is making a bold cry
for help for guidance and parenting. In doing so, understanding is made clearer in regards to his
character's uncertainty. Consequently, his identity issues become evident to be a matter of his
lacking guidance. As Plato suffers from parental attachment, he is unsure of who his parents are as
people, while he is also uncertain of who his friends are and ultimately who he is. In essence, the
framing of Plato's locker picture conveys his overwhelming anxiety and his uncertainty in own
sexuality.
From a psychological perspective, Plato's notion of friendship and personal identity also links with
his apparent civil and sexual insecurities. In understanding that the picture in Plato's locker suggests
his lack of a definitive father figure, it may be assumed that he is unaware of the basic societal
conventions with which he is expected to uphold. Essentially, he is inept in terms of social customs,
