MLA Review
Part 1: MLA In–text Citations – Rewrite the last line of each quote with a correctly formatted MLA
in–text citation.
1. "One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture–a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell
upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees–very gradually–I made up my mind to take the life
of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever."
This is from the text book, Great Writing, which was edited by Harvey S. Wiener and Nora
Eisenberg. It comes from the first page of the short story by Edgar Allan Poe called The Tell–Tale
Heart. The story starts on page 108 and ends on page 111. The book was published by Mc Graw Hill
in Boston in the year 2009.

This is a paraphrase from an article called "Progress for Women and Minorities" in The Tennessean

English Reflection
In my previous English courses, I had no knowledge of writing an essay, or even a proper
sentence. Writing did not seem like anything important in my life, or that it would affect me
anyway in the future. I had despised my own writing and loathed having to write essays for any
of my classes. When I had enrolled in Composition I, I had no idea what I was going to do to pass.
However, in class, we had done collaborative work, which had helped me progress myself.
Collaborative work had consisted of multiple students helping each other, sharing ideas, and
peer–reviews. This was a change of pace for me since I had not done that before. In previous classes,
I had done individual work, which was solely myself correcting and working on my work.
Between collaborative work and individual work, I enjoyed working with partners and sharing each
other's experiences to benefit ourselves. Over this class I have developed my writing skills, learned
from my previous mistakes, and understood the writing process.
To begin with, before taking this class I would have grammar errors, low level word choices,
sentence fragments, contractions, and no sentence variety. The grammar in my essays would be
something that I had never worked on or learned from. My word choices were that of a middle
schooler and would sound childish at times. I had never taken the time to learn about the sentence
variety and combinations that were possible. My knowledge of sentence variety was limited to only
compound and

Also, many professors only teach us MLA style, but this class can teach us two types of essay,
MLA and APA. I think that's great because APA also is popular, it's useful for us to know these
two types of essays. And from this class, I also learned that when we are writing causal
assignment, the most important reason should list at the last of all reasons rather than at the first
position. At last, I have some suggestions about REVEL. I tried to do the quiz on the revel but the
website said the quiz has not been assigned. However, I used it on my society class in the first
semester. So I have some thoughts about it. Frankly, I don't think revel suits for our class, especially
the quiz. The quiz always focuses on the contents in the text book,

The Importance Of Writing An Argumentative Essay
As a student in a beginning English class some elements may seem difficult at the beginning but
with practice they become long lasting skills. Writing an argumentative is not an easy task there is a
lot of elements that have to come together to create a successful essay but as many other things, it
requires constant practice and effort. At the start of this course I wasn't a very good writer myself,
and I can see the huge improvement this course made by looking at my first argumentative essay. I
was able to identify and apply the requisites of a good argument essay. A well thought structure,
reliable evidence, and a counterargument are three essential components of argumentative writing.
The structure of an essay is the foundation to a good argumentative paper. Throughout this course
I learned the importance of having an essay structure, before I started this class I didn't have a
very clear vision of how to correctly format my essay. In my diagnostic essay, which was the first
one I wrote for English 1302, had five paragraphs. That is considered a standard structure of many
essays but it is more of a skeleton. Looking back at that essay I see how poor my introduction was,
I did not even have a clear thesis. One only thing even close to one that I could spot was, "The
"millennials," people born in the last two decades of the 20th century, are failing to reflect Rich's
model for a good education." It merely addresses the topic in a simple way. It did not serve the

MLA Rough Draft
1.When writing, whether you paraphrase or directly quote someone else's ideas anywhere in your
paper, you must document the use of those borrowed ideas with an internal citation notation. In
MLA, there are two basic features of an internal citation. What are they?
In–text citation – This is a parenthetical citation within the paper that refers the reader to a list of
works cited. It commonly includes the author of the source and a page number, and punctuation
separates the author's last name and the page number. Nor is the abbreviation p. (for "page") used.
The period that ends the sentence appears after the closing parenthesis. 2.In MLA, if you work
(include) the identity of the source into the sentence structure, where do page numbers...show more
content...
In MLA, how are the works cited entries organized on the Work(s) Cited page?
пѓ Tell me how to arrange a works cited list on the page. No example required.
пЃ¶Create a new page at the end of your paper for a "Works Cited" list. Center the words "Works
Cited" at the top of the page. Double space after the title and begin entering citations.
пЃ¶Entries are listed alphabetically by the last name of the author or by the first major word of the
title if no author is given. If a source has more than one author, it is alphabetized by the last name of
the author whose name appears first. The entries are not numbered.
пЃ¶Entries are double–spaced.
пЃ¶The first line of each entry begins at the left margin. If more than one line is needed to complete
the entry, additional lines are indented five spaces or half an inch (this is called a hanging indent).
6.In MLA, if the source's identity is not worked into (written as part of) your sentence structure, how
does the internal citation look the first time you create it? Use your last name and page number 123
to illustrate your answer.
To correctly answer question 6, show me (don't tell me) how an internal citation looks the first time
you cite it in your paper, using your name as the source and page number 123 to complete your
response. You don't need to write a sentence first, just show me the

Schools Need Dress Codes
Dress codes in public schooling have recently been a controversial issue nation–wide.
Mandatory uniform policy's measures and emphasize the benefits of students on specific behavioral
and academic outcomes. The arguments for the issue are just as strong as those against the issue.
There are two main points surrounding school uniforms: performance and school and reduction of
violence due to uniformity.
Uniforms are argued to positively affect student safety by: lowering student victimization, decreasing
gang activity and fights and differentiating strangers from students in school building. Dress codes
in public schools would be good, in order to cut down the violence, which would eliminate the
problems of...show more content...
A dress code will allow students to make friends on their personal qualities, rather than appearance.
Too often students classify other students but the way they dress. Many students avoid some of their
classmates because of the way they dress, rather than trying to be friends with them (Brunsma 5–6).
Students would make friends with people that have the same common interests with themselves,
rather than people that dress like them.
The anonymous author of Rules of Fashion says that the dress code is one thing that has served to
lower crime, violence, and increase attendance and increase learning at a lot of schools. And a dress
code itself and important statement because we want our young children, whether rich, poor, or
middle class, when they're in school to define themselves primarily in terms of what's going on
inside, not what they're wearing not he outside (Anonymous 2).
As with any issue, there are people who are on both sides of this issue. The argument for school
uniforms says that uniforms decrease violence in the schools. People who argue this side of the issue
state that when the students wear school uniforms, that the number of infractions on the rules is
decreased. The argument against the issue says that there are other programs that the schools can
undertake that produce the same effects with out the school uniforms.
Jan Conley, author of the article School and Dress Codes says that people that are against dress
code policies stress the legal and

The Current Mla Format And Guidelines
Mrs. Pruitt's Research Paper Guide Paper Requirements The length of the research paper must be no
less than 1,500–words and no more than 2,500–words. The 2,500–word limit does not apply to notes
or to the annotated bibliography. In–text citations are required. If your sources are not
acknowledged, your paper will receive a zero and will be required to be rewritten for a lower
grade because this is considered plagiarism. No more than five quotations are allowed in your
paper. The research paper must follow the current MLA format and guidelines to pass. See chart
below on how to properly format your paper. Separation of Primary and Secondary Sources are
required. Separate your bibliography into two sections: one for primary sources and one for
secondary sources. Some sources may be considered either primary or secondary so use your
annotations to explain your reason for classifying any sources that are not clearly primary or
secondary. Listing a source under both primary and secondary is not allowed. Each component of
the research paper will be assigned a grade and each component will then become part of the
research paper 's culminating final grade. Grading This grade is calculated to include the
component parts of the paper along with the final product. The research paper is worth 20% of the
final grade.  Topic Chosen–100 points  Brainstorm and Detailed Outline–100 points 

I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write
an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite
better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and
the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the
contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards.

This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand
the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever
received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays
writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

How My Writing Has Improved
After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the
skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at
grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise.
Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further
on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the
poems and stories we experienced this semester. Writing has been an important form of
expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult
for me because I can't always seem to find the right words to say. I feel that I am more expressive
and have more control over what I want to say. While this semester progressed toward its end, I
have learned new writing skills and gradually learned how to engage with audiences. This skill
was very useful in meeting my course goals in English 102. I believe that I have grown at
organization and careful stream my thoughts as well. Before I would just begin writing my papers
without any plans or organization, along with no definite idea of where I would be going with the
assignments, but throughout this course I've learned that you should base your paper around your
thesis statement. Another skill I took from this class was to value my classmate's responses, from
their reactions made me much more aware that my main ideas

Reflection Paper About English Composition
English Composition I has developed my style of writing and my skills analyzing and
researching topics to write a piece about a topic. Throughout the course, I got better at analyzing
articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to
use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if
needed. Before taking the English Composition course, I was not one to organize my essays in an
ordeal order to clearly state the point of the work. Now with taking the course, I have learned to
organize my essays, examine research for a topic, and develop an essay with proper mechanics, and
revising skills. In writing my personal, review, analytical, and cultural...show more content...
I then described my life and who I was. After describing this, I explained my experiences in
confronting racism. The point of the essay was to state that racism is still alive and can be present
anywhere. After writing this essay, I learned that my mechanics and style was not where it should
be. Even with the revisions Mr. Heldenfels made in the draft, I still made mistakes with mechanics
and tense shits. I had written comma splice and has several spelling mistakes. I looked to improve
my mechanics after writing this essay.
With writing my review essay of A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's album The Bigger Artist. The essay
took some time to write because of the research I needed to gather. In this essay I used more
citations and quotes. I made mistakes the mechanics in writing the quotes. This was the first essay
in which we used sources, so it was challenging to create my own ideas but I was able to do it.
Writing this essay improved my knowledge of mechanics in citations and quotations.
Through taking the course, I learned to utilizes sources in a more efficient way. In writing my
analytical essay of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly I had to use ten sources. All the sources
I used provided different information, some provided more than others, but all sources were
needed to complete the essay. In collecting all the information for the essay, I had to research who
created the source and decide if it was credible. This essay assignment force me to examine works in

My Journey Of Becoming A Better Writer
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has
been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the
things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what
college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would
be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all
thanks to the composition program. As an international student and going to school in Sweden I haft

I wrote about my journey and how it affected my view of life. In this writing project I learned to
write a story with a purpose and show my readers a learning movement. By using different kinds
of writing tools I could give my readers a more complex story. I learned how to write by showing
and using details (the senses) to really give my readers a deeper understanding and emotions. I also
learned in how you prepare for writing an essay. The importance of building your idea (pre–write),
write, revision, and finally editing the paper. The last writing project I did was an
Argumentative. I choose to write and argue about the television and its effects on children. What
the consequences are on playing violent/aggressive video games in young ages. Using credible
sources and prove by evidence I could convince my reader about my opinion. In this paper I had
to be fare and show both sides of the subject to give the reader a reliable opinion. The most
important thing I learned was how to use all the sources and present them in the text. Using MLA
format was something new and different for me. I realized the importance of presenting the sources
in the correct format to keep the high credibility in my paper. I also understood that the MLA–format
is very useful for paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting in my text. What I believe has helped me
through this year, and made me to a much better writer than I once

The different types of formatting I had to learn in college is getting out of hand. The all of the
different formats are loosely connected. The MLA format and endnotes are very similar in that
they are found at end of a paper, but you do not give put the author last name and page number
after it. I choose to use footnotes, because my laptop cannot decide what it wants to do. Another
difference is the lack of putting your last name before the page number in the header, but is similar

MLA Documentation Style Analysis
According to the MLA Handbook, the in–text citation of MLA documentation style is inserted in the
body of the paper to indicate the source of information that was used. Brief in–text citation direct the
reader to more complete information in the works–cited list. When we quote directly from the
source, we need to add an in–text citation at the end of the quote with the author's name and page
number in parenthesis. If the author's name is mentioned in the text then we can exclude it from the
parenthetical citation. Generally page number is not mentioned in the body of the sentence because
it can disrupt the reader. When the quotation is long, the text looks like a block of text with
indention and without the quotation marks around the quotation.

English Reflection Essay
Over the course of this semester I have learned many different things in English 101 with Dr. Mary
Bell. I have learned about four main things that have helped transform my writing immensely. These
four things are: rhetorical awareness, critical thinking, reflection and revision, and conventions. Each
of these four things I have learned this year have changed my writing for the better in their own
unique way. Through the usage of these different techniques I believe I have grown as a writer.
I learned that the audience and the context really matter when you are writing your essay. The
audiences and the context of the essays completely changed when the writing prompt was changed.
For example, in my literacy narrative I focused on my audience who was women battling with
Breast Cancer. However, in my aspirational essay I had another audience, this audience was college
students who were involved with fraternities. By writing to a specific audience you able to know
that the readers are looking to learn about your writings. Considering the audience and the context of
the essay was something I had never thought about before, but by really thinking and considering
about who my audience was and what the context was it made the essays easier to write. When you
are considering things such as the audience and the context you are able to focus on things you think
would be effective in your writing.
By critically thinking I was able to create a better structure

What I Learned In Mla Format
Reflection Essay
Throughout this semester I have learned many valuable resources, and tools. The big thing you
taught us was how to write and argument paper. Also I have learned different tools on
summarizing, how to better my skills for peer reviews, new library skills, and MLA format. Most of
these I already knew, but you taught us them more in depth, and you gave me better understandings
of them. With writing an argumentative paper, it's important to have all the right facts, and make
sure you have reliable sources. If you don't have the right facts or reliable sources nobody will
want to read your argument; because you wont have the right facts to back up your points. When
writing an argumentative paper, its good to know all the facts about each side. Knowing all the facts
about each side is important, because people want to read...show more content...
Like summarizing, and writing an essay I knew how to do it, but going in and listening to the
speaker explain it to us helped a lot. I learned more on how to use the thesaurus, and all the different
skills he taught us on using key words to looks information up.
MLA format is something I have always kind of needed help with. Until this semester for some
reason I could never really cite my sources that well. Its something I knew how to do, but when it
came time to do it my mind went blank. When you went over everything on the bored that helped
me so much (also because I took notes), but only because you told us to take them. With MLA
format I learned that when quoting, if its more than three lines you have to use block quote. I didn't
know that till I got to this class.
In summary, all these skills will be helpful for my next few college years, and when I go off to get
jobs. Thank you for teaching us everything you have. From something you are supposed to teach to
common sense things. You are a wonderful teacher, and I'm so glad you were my

I Feel As A Writer
I feel as though I have really grown as a writer because of this class. Before taking W131, I always
had a hard time trying to put my thoughts down on paper in a way that made sense. No matter how
many times I would rewrite my past papers I never seemed to be able to convey my thoughts and
beliefs accurately. This course really has taught me the importance of prewriting and revising.
Before, I would simple sit down and stare at a blank computer screen and just kind of start typing
and what I ended up with was extremely unorganized and hard to follow. Now that I have found a
way to prewrite that works for me, I feel as though my writing has really improved and become
more organized. One of my other "weaknesses", when it comes to writing, is my inability to keep
from getting to emotionally involved. If I feel passionately about something then you are going to
be able to tell, no matter which emotion it may be, frustration, anger, sadness, or joy. I know that
being passionate about something and that putting that passion into your work can be a very good
thing, but it can also be bad if you are writing a paper which requires you to be unbiased. For
instance, essay four the synthesis paper, the articles that I chose to write about made me extremely
frustrated and it was very difficult for me to control my emotions while writing it. I know that my
anger and frustration is easily felt by the readers based on the peer reviews that I received, as well as

In 2008, twelve women taking resident in the U.S. died due to legal abortions performed during the

Grit Essay Examples
Grit is a predictor of academic, professional, and personal success. Grit can be defined as strength
of character or the ability to overcome failure and continue to work toward success. People with
grit are not always the people with the most natural ability, but their work ethic and ability to
overcome obstacles allows them to achieve success. Grit is a very valuable characteristic in almost
any venture, as it gives someone an advantage in overcoming the inevitable obstacles they will face.
However, grit is much easier adopted when an individual has a growth mindset. The first step to
obtaining grit is to correlate both self–control and self–confidence when trying to reach an objective.

I had no experience as a runner nor did I have the form. This did not phase me however. That year
I promised myself to push through all the six mile runs, sore legs, gnarly blisters, and at times,
lack of oxygen. At every meet and speed workout practice I pushed myself further and further. I
set a goal every time I kicked off from the starting line and never let myself get discouraged when
I failed. By my senior year, I was the fourth fastest runner on varsity. That year our varsity team
won the district meet, which qualified us to run in the 2016 state meet in Oregon. The
transformation over the years were evident. My determination to accomplish my goal of
becoming a faster runner was complete. If I had simply just given up that first day of practice, I
wouldn't have ran along side of the fastest runners in Oregon or have met the multitude of people
that are now my closest friends. Having a goal sets one up for a challenge, whether it being
physically or mentally, goals keep us active and thinking in more ways than one. Still, if someone
has self–control, confidence, and a goal, they are still not complete. Growth mindset is the cone to
an ice cream. It is the foundation of what I think a successful person is. Without it one couldn't use
the characteristics mentioned above in more ways than one. Someone with a growth mindset believe
that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent
are just the starting point.

Critical Analysis: MLA Format
Critical Analysis
For the past week we have been learning about critical analysis essays. Before coming to
composition I didn't know much about critical analysis essays, I knew they were conducted in
MLA Format and they were basically a comparison between two books. After learning more in class
I was informed more in–depth about critical analysis essays. In class we were taught that critical
analysis essays are to essentially be a comparison between articles, books, and or anything else to
help the reader better understand the work. Critical analysis essays are to incorporate a thesis
statement to give readers something to engage in when reading your essay, it gives some idea of

The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of
the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I
usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my
grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how
many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including
work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write
essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even
though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge
about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve
include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has
definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I
have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do
not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not
find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have
significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too

How Do You Write An Essay In Mla Format

  • 1. MLA Review Essay MLA Review Part 1: MLA In–text Citations – Rewrite the last line of each quote with a correctly formatted MLA in–text citation. 1. "One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture–a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees–very gradually–I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever." This is from the text book, Great Writing, which was edited by Harvey S. Wiener and Nora Eisenberg. It comes from the first page of the short story by Edgar Allan Poe called The Tell–Tale Heart. The story starts on page 108 and ends on page 111. The book was published by Mc Graw Hill in Boston in the year 2009. "Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran...show more content... "Women and minorities make up 52 percent of the workers in American businesses today" ("Progress for Women and Minorities" BI). 5. "Wollstonecraft believes that if a woman submits to a marriage just to remain idle, she has no right to complain of her fate or act like she has a right to disregard rules." This quote is from the Website called Women's Rights and Marriage. The article is titled Mary Wollstonecraft on Marriage and was written by Betsy Michaels. There is no date on the website, but I visited it on May 14, 2010. The address is www.womenandmarriage.com. • 3. English Reflection In my previous English courses, I had no knowledge of writing an essay, or even a proper sentence. Writing did not seem like anything important in my life, or that it would affect me anyway in the future. I had despised my own writing and loathed having to write essays for any of my classes. When I had enrolled in Composition I, I had no idea what I was going to do to pass. However, in class, we had done collaborative work, which had helped me progress myself. Collaborative work had consisted of multiple students helping each other, sharing ideas, and peer–reviews. This was a change of pace for me since I had not done that before. In previous classes, I had done individual work, which was solely myself correcting and working on my work. Between collaborative work and individual work, I enjoyed working with partners and sharing each other's experiences to benefit ourselves. Over this class I have developed my writing skills, learned from my previous mistakes, and understood the writing process. To begin with, before taking this class I would have grammar errors, low level word choices, sentence fragments, contractions, and no sentence variety. The grammar in my essays would be something that I had never worked on or learned from. My word choices were that of a middle schooler and would sound childish at times. I had never taken the time to learn about the sentence variety and combinations that were possible. My knowledge of sentence variety was limited to only compound and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Compare And Contrast Mla And Apa Also, many professors only teach us MLA style, but this class can teach us two types of essay, MLA and APA. I think that's great because APA also is popular, it's useful for us to know these two types of essays. And from this class, I also learned that when we are writing causal assignment, the most important reason should list at the last of all reasons rather than at the first position. At last, I have some suggestions about REVEL. I tried to do the quiz on the revel but the website said the quiz has not been assigned. However, I used it on my society class in the first semester. So I have some thoughts about it. Frankly, I don't think revel suits for our class, especially the quiz. The quiz always focuses on the contents in the text book, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. The Importance Of Writing An Argumentative Essay As a student in a beginning English class some elements may seem difficult at the beginning but with practice they become long lasting skills. Writing an argumentative is not an easy task there is a lot of elements that have to come together to create a successful essay but as many other things, it requires constant practice and effort. At the start of this course I wasn't a very good writer myself, and I can see the huge improvement this course made by looking at my first argumentative essay. I was able to identify and apply the requisites of a good argument essay. A well thought structure, reliable evidence, and a counterargument are three essential components of argumentative writing. The structure of an essay is the foundation to a good argumentative paper. Throughout this course I learned the importance of having an essay structure, before I started this class I didn't have a very clear vision of how to correctly format my essay. In my diagnostic essay, which was the first one I wrote for English 1302, had five paragraphs. That is considered a standard structure of many essays but it is more of a skeleton. Looking back at that essay I see how poor my introduction was, I did not even have a clear thesis. One only thing even close to one that I could spot was, "The "millennials," people born in the last two decades of the 20th century, are failing to reflect Rich's model for a good education." It merely addresses the topic in a simple way. It did not serve the purpose a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. MLA Rough Draft 1.When writing, whether you paraphrase or directly quote someone else's ideas anywhere in your paper, you must document the use of those borrowed ideas with an internal citation notation. In MLA, there are two basic features of an internal citation. What are they? In–text citation – This is a parenthetical citation within the paper that refers the reader to a list of works cited. It commonly includes the author of the source and a page number, and punctuation separates the author's last name and the page number. Nor is the abbreviation p. (for "page") used. The period that ends the sentence appears after the closing parenthesis. 2.In MLA, if you work (include) the identity of the source into the sentence structure, where do page numbers...show more content... In MLA, how are the works cited entries organized on the Work(s) Cited page? пѓ Tell me how to arrange a works cited list on the page. No example required. пЃ¶Create a new page at the end of your paper for a "Works Cited" list. Center the words "Works Cited" at the top of the page. Double space after the title and begin entering citations. пЃ¶Entries are listed alphabetically by the last name of the author or by the first major word of the title if no author is given. If a source has more than one author, it is alphabetized by the last name of the author whose name appears first. The entries are not numbered. пЃ¶Entries are double–spaced. пЃ¶The first line of each entry begins at the left margin. If more than one line is needed to complete the entry, additional lines are indented five spaces or half an inch (this is called a hanging indent). 6.In MLA, if the source's identity is not worked into (written as part of) your sentence structure, how does the internal citation look the first time you create it? Use your last name and page number 123 to illustrate your answer. To correctly answer question 6, show me (don't tell me) how an internal citation looks the first time you cite it in your paper, using your name as the source and page number 123 to complete your response. • 7. Schools Need Dress Codes Dress codes in public schooling have recently been a controversial issue nation–wide. Mandatory uniform policy's measures and emphasize the benefits of students on specific behavioral and academic outcomes. The arguments for the issue are just as strong as those against the issue. There are two main points surrounding school uniforms: performance and school and reduction of violence due to uniformity. Uniforms are argued to positively affect student safety by: lowering student victimization, decreasing gang activity and fights and differentiating strangers from students in school building. Dress codes in public schools would be good, in order to cut down the violence, which would eliminate the problems of...show more content... A dress code will allow students to make friends on their personal qualities, rather than appearance. Too often students classify other students but the way they dress. Many students avoid some of their classmates because of the way they dress, rather than trying to be friends with them (Brunsma 5–6). Students would make friends with people that have the same common interests with themselves, rather than people that dress like them. The anonymous author of Rules of Fashion says that the dress code is one thing that has served to lower crime, violence, and increase attendance and increase learning at a lot of schools. And a dress code itself and important statement because we want our young children, whether rich, poor, or middle class, when they're in school to define themselves primarily in terms of what's going on inside, not what they're wearing not he outside (Anonymous 2). As with any issue, there are people who are on both sides of this issue. The argument for school uniforms says that uniforms decrease violence in the schools. People who argue this side of the issue state that when the students wear school uniforms, that the number of infractions on the rules is decreased. The argument against the issue says that there are other programs that the schools can undertake that produce the same effects with out the school uniforms. The 2,500–word limit does not apply to notes or to the annotated bibliography. In–text citations are required. If your sources are not acknowledged, your paper will receive a zero and will be required to be rewritten for a lower grade because this is considered plagiarism. No more than five quotations are allowed in your paper. The research paper must follow the current MLA format and guidelines to pass. See chart below on how to properly format your paper. Separation of Primary and Secondary Sources are required. Separate your bibliography into two sections: one for primary sources and one for secondary sources. Some sources may be considered either primary or secondary so use your annotations to explain your reason for classifying any sources that are not clearly primary or secondary. Listing a source under both primary and secondary is not allowed. Each component of the research paper will be assigned a grade and each component will then become part of the research paper 's culminating final grade. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. How My Writing Has Improved After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise. Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the poems and stories we experienced this semester. Writing has been an important form of expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult for me because I can't always seem to find the right words to say. I feel that I am more expressive and have more control over what I want to say. While this semester progressed toward its end, I have learned new writing skills and gradually learned how to engage with audiences. This skill was very useful in meeting my course goals in English 102. I believe that I have grown at organization and careful stream my thoughts as well. Before I would just begin writing my papers without any plans or organization, along with no definite idea of where I would be going with the assignments, but throughout this course I've learned that you should base your paper around your thesis statement. Another skill I took from this class was to value my classmate's responses, from their reactions made me much more aware that my main ideas Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Reflection Paper About English Composition English Composition I has developed my style of writing and my skills analyzing and researching topics to write a piece about a topic. Throughout the course, I got better at analyzing articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if needed. Before taking the English Composition course, I was not one to organize my essays in an ordeal order to clearly state the point of the work. Now with taking the course, I have learned to organize my essays, examine research for a topic, and develop an essay with proper mechanics, and revising skills. In writing my personal, review, analytical, and cultural...show more content... I then described my life and who I was. After describing this, I explained my experiences in confronting racism. The point of the essay was to state that racism is still alive and can be present anywhere. After writing this essay, I learned that my mechanics and style was not where it should be. Even with the revisions Mr. Heldenfels made in the draft, I still made mistakes with mechanics and tense shits. I had written comma splice and has several spelling mistakes. I looked to improve my mechanics after writing this essay. With writing my review essay of A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's album The Bigger Artist. The essay took some time to write because of the research I needed to gather. In this essay I used more citations and quotes. I made mistakes the mechanics in writing the quotes. This was the first essay in which we used sources, so it was challenging to create my own ideas but I was able to do it. Writing this essay improved my knowledge of mechanics in citations and quotations. Through taking the course, I learned to utilizes sources in a more efficient way. In writing my analytical essay of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly I had to use ten sources. All the sources I used provided different information, some provided more than others, but all sources were needed to complete the essay. In collecting all the information for the essay, I had to research who created the source and decide if it was credible. • 12. My Journey Of Becoming A Better Writer A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program. As an international student and going to school in Sweden I haft to admit that it has not been easy. We have a totally different education system and it has therefore taking me some time to understand the new American school...show more content... I wrote about my journey and how it affected my view of life. In this writing project I learned to write a story with a purpose and show my readers a learning movement. By using different kinds of writing tools I could give my readers a more complex story. I learned how to write by showing and using details (the senses) to really give my readers a deeper understanding and emotions. I also learned in how you prepare for writing an essay. The importance of building your idea (pre–write), write, revision, and finally editing the paper. The last writing project I did was an Argumentative. I choose to write and argue about the television and its effects on children. What the consequences are on playing violent/aggressive video games in young ages. Using credible sources and prove by evidence I could convince my reader about my opinion. In this paper I had to be fare and show both sides of the subject to give the reader a reliable opinion. The most important thing I learned was how to use all the sources and present them in the text. Using MLA format was something new and different for me. I realized the importance of presenting the sources in the correct format to keep the high credibility in my paper. I also understood that the MLA–format is very useful for paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting in my text. What I believe has helped me through this year, and made me to a much better writer than I once Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Compare And Contrast Apa And Mla Format The different types of formatting I had to learn in college is getting out of hand. The all of the different formats are loosely connected. The MLA format and endnotes are very similar in that they are found at end of a paper, but you do not give put the author last name and page number after it. I choose to use footnotes, because my laptop cannot decide what it wants to do. Another difference is the lack of putting your last name before the page number in the header, but is similar is APA Format. • 14. MLA Documentation Style Analysis According to the MLA Handbook, the in–text citation of MLA documentation style is inserted in the body of the paper to indicate the source of information that was used. Brief in–text citation direct the reader to more complete information in the works–cited list. When we quote directly from the source, we need to add an in–text citation at the end of the quote with the author's name and page number in parenthesis. If the author's name is mentioned in the text then we can exclude it from the parenthetical citation. Generally page number is not mentioned in the body of the sentence because it can disrupt the reader. When the quotation is long, the text looks like a block of text with indention and without the quotation marks around the quotation. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. English Reflection Essay Over the course of this semester I have learned many different things in English 101 with Dr. Mary Bell. I have learned about four main things that have helped transform my writing immensely. These four things are: rhetorical awareness, critical thinking, reflection and revision, and conventions. Each of these four things I have learned this year have changed my writing for the better in their own unique way. Through the usage of these different techniques I believe I have grown as a writer. I learned that the audience and the context really matter when you are writing your essay. The audiences and the context of the essays completely changed when the writing prompt was changed. For example, in my literacy narrative I focused on my audience who was women battling with Breast Cancer. However, in my aspirational essay I had another audience, this audience was college students who were involved with fraternities. By writing to a specific audience you able to know that the readers are looking to learn about your writings. Considering the audience and the context of the essay was something I had never thought about before, but by really thinking and considering about who my audience was and what the context was it made the essays easier to write. When you are considering things such as the audience and the context you are able to focus on things you think would be effective in your writing. By critically thinking I was able to create a better structure Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. What I Learned In Mla Format Reflection Essay Throughout this semester I have learned many valuable resources, and tools. The big thing you taught us was how to write and argument paper. Also I have learned different tools on summarizing, how to better my skills for peer reviews, new library skills, and MLA format. Most of these I already knew, but you taught us them more in depth, and you gave me better understandings of them. With writing an argumentative paper, it's important to have all the right facts, and make sure you have reliable sources. If you don't have the right facts or reliable sources nobody will want to read your argument; because you wont have the right facts to back up your points. When writing an argumentative paper, its good to know all the facts about each side. Knowing all the facts about each side is important, because people want to read...show more content... Like summarizing, and writing an essay I knew how to do it, but going in and listening to the speaker explain it to us helped a lot. I learned more on how to use the thesaurus, and all the different skills he taught us on using key words to looks information up. MLA format is something I have always kind of needed help with. Until this semester for some reason I could never really cite my sources that well. Its something I knew how to do, but when it came time to do it my mind went blank. When you went over everything on the bored that helped me so much (also because I took notes), but only because you told us to take them. With MLA format I learned that when quoting, if its more than three lines you have to use block quote. I didn't know that till I got to this class. In summary, all these skills will be helpful for my next few college years, and when I go off to get jobs. Thank you for teaching us everything you have. • 17. I Feel As A Writer I feel as though I have really grown as a writer because of this class. Before taking W131, I always had a hard time trying to put my thoughts down on paper in a way that made sense. No matter how many times I would rewrite my past papers I never seemed to be able to convey my thoughts and beliefs accurately. This course really has taught me the importance of prewriting and revising. Before, I would simple sit down and stare at a blank computer screen and just kind of start typing and what I ended up with was extremely unorganized and hard to follow. Now that I have found a way to prewrite that works for me, I feel as though my writing has really improved and become more organized. One of my other "weaknesses", when it comes to writing, is my inability to keep from getting to emotionally involved. If I feel passionately about something then you are going to be able to tell, no matter which emotion it may be, frustration, anger, sadness, or joy. I know that being passionate about something and that putting that passion into your work can be a very good thing, but it can also be bad if you are writing a paper which requires you to be unbiased. For instance, essay four the synthesis paper, the articles that I chose to write about made me extremely frustrated and it was very difficult for me to control my emotions while writing it. I know that my anger and frustration is easily felt by the readers based on the peer reviews that I received, as well as some of the initial Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Abortion should be available to all females living in the United States, but must be a legal citizen to have late abortions, which are during the second or third trimesters of pregnancy. • 19. Grit Essay Examples Grit is a predictor of academic, professional, and personal success. Grit can be defined as strength of character or the ability to overcome failure and continue to work toward success. People with grit are not always the people with the most natural ability, but their work ethic and ability to overcome obstacles allows them to achieve success. Grit is a very valuable characteristic in almost any venture, as it gives someone an advantage in overcoming the inevitable obstacles they will face. However, grit is much easier adopted when an individual has a growth mindset. The first step to obtaining grit is to correlate both self–control and self–confidence when trying to reach an objective. By doing this, one can focus on the task at hand...show more content... I had no experience as a runner nor did I have the form. This did not phase me however. That year I promised myself to push through all the six mile runs, sore legs, gnarly blisters, and at times, lack of oxygen. At every meet and speed workout practice I pushed myself further and further. I set a goal every time I kicked off from the starting line and never let myself get discouraged when I failed. By my senior year, I was the fourth fastest runner on varsity. That year our varsity team won the district meet, which qualified us to run in the 2016 state meet in Oregon. The transformation over the years were evident. My determination to accomplish my goal of becoming a faster runner was complete. If I had simply just given up that first day of practice, I wouldn't have ran along side of the fastest runners in Oregon or have met the multitude of people that are now my closest friends. Having a goal sets one up for a challenge, whether it being physically or mentally, goals keep us active and thinking in more ways than one. Still, if someone has self–control, confidence, and a goal, they are still not complete. Growth mindset is the cone to an ice cream. It is the foundation of what I think a successful person is. Without it one couldn't use the characteristics mentioned above in more ways than one. Someone with a growth mindset believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, brains and talent are just the starting point. • 20. Critical Analysis: MLA Format Critical Analysis For the past week we have been learning about critical analysis essays. Before coming to composition I didn't know much about critical analysis essays, I knew they were conducted in MLA Format and they were basically a comparison between two books. After learning more in class I was informed more in–depth about critical analysis essays. In class we were taught that critical analysis essays are to essentially be a comparison between articles, books, and or anything else to help the reader better understand the work. Critical analysis essays are to incorporate a thesis statement to give readers something to engage in when reading your essay, it gives some idea of what this essay is going to be about. • 21. Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe...show more content... The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
