From the Desk of the Head of the Department
This passing out batch, i.e., 2020-22 will go in the annals as ‘the Corona Batch’. Among
several disruptions #Covid19 pandemic brought in, the disruption to education system is of a
curious kind. On one hand it gave ample opportunities to explore new dimensions in online
pedagogy, while on the other hand it made us realize several vital pedagogical issues, which
were, hitherto, taken as granted.
The benefits of teaching this batch were innumerable. Right from the beginning, it was
challenging to build a rapport with students as students have never visited department or
teachers, personally. To bridge this gap, we tried our best to make teaching as interesting and
engaging as possible. And hence, we have to ‘revisit & relearn’ pedagogy of teaching in
online remote mode. We also have to try our hands at new technologies like OBS, Live
Streaming, Video Recording, Learning Glass, Video Conferencing etc. It was not only to use
these technologies but also to make it effective and engaging for learners. Going down the
memory lane of screenshots taken during first week of teaching this batch was a good
memory to see how it all began. The Google Class & the Group were introduced in live video
conferencing session – and OBS was used to make it engaging. The learning glass was also
used to see that the teaching does not become dull and boring. The first two pictures in the
below given collage-pyramid (on next page) are telling this story. However, the story of
disruption does not end here. The other side of the story, the students’ side, had also been of
great learning importance.
The students story told from the perspective of teacher has a few significant aspects. The
teacher expects curiosity in the eyes of the students. This curiosity is what is driving force for
the teacher. Well, in this remote emergency, if there is one very challenging thing, it was to
feel the curiosity in the eyes of the students. As most of the students keep their camera’s off, it
was not possible to see even normal gestures, forget the curiosity in the eyes. Somehow, it
was very difficult to make it understand students that keeping camera on while attending the
sessions is necessary. A few students were able to understand this. These students were like
oasis in the desert. These students who kept their cameras own while attending the online
sessions were such a great relief in the troubling and chaotic situation. Among the few
students who understood this, three students deserve special mention. Daya, Nidhi and Riddhi
– they were the most consistent in regularly attending the sessions with camera on. We, the
teachers, expect to have similar students, in troubling times, wherein one can experience if
the attempts made for engaging the learners are materializing or not. The bottom picture of
the screenshot-pyramid (on next page) is the evidence of this. Such a participation by
students in remote teaching is very crucial.
7. 7 | Memorabilia 2021-22 Department of English, MKBU
The number of students in this Corona Batch was also considerably low than normal class
strength. That was like a double whammy. One, virtual existence of all of us and on it, low
number. Some may say it is good. Easy to manage! Well, yes, that’s true but we wanted to do
lots of activities. Without good number of participations from equally good number of
students, it is difficult to carry on the show. We believe, education is not only completing
syllabus and the routine academic rigor. It is all about participating in co-curricular, extra-
curricular activities like reading papers in seminars, publishing research papers, participating
in cultural and sports events. It is not to say that there was complete stand-still to all these
activities. However, it reduced drastically in this passing out batch 2020-22. Even with all
these limitations of second wave of corona pandemic and lockdowns of academic institutes
and activities not happening as such, our students have participated in around 40 events. Have
a look at the chart in Memorabilia 2022 – page number 138/139. In spite of reasonably good
participation in the troubling time, we were not able to get laurels and accolades. Except for
FIRST positions by Riddhi Bhatt in Essay Writing and Khushbu Lakhupota in Research
Paper Writing competitions, the participation did not yield desired result. Apart from this
8. 8 | Memorabilia 2021-22 Department of English, MKBU
sorry state of affairs, even use of library substantially reduced during this year. Normally, all
students have their library card and keep on visiting library occasionally to exchange books.
This time, several students did not open an account with University Central Library. To add
to this sorry state of affairs, several students’ committees remained ineffective or inactive.
This is a great lesson to remembered. This is an example of why education is not only
completing syllabus. When the students are not able to have physical gatherings in an
academic institute, there are innumerable life-skills which are not acquired. Yes, some are
genius and they do not require such training or orientation. Nevertheless, we need to build an
environment wherein all these life-skills are acquired without much effort. We are unhappy to
see that many talented students are passing out without brushing up their talent, many
committee leaders are passing out without learning leadership skills, and many are passing
out without getting the finishing fine touch of our Department of English.
It is not to be concluded that all was dark and dull. We have seen amazing participation from
Kishan, Latta, and Sneha in various events. Apart from Daya, Nidhi & Riddhi, Latta &
Khushboo have displayed an amazing development in their performances from first to the last
semester. Chandani, Sneha, Jignesh, Bhavyang, Pina & Aditi were also very good and
performed as expected. Hiral and Nandita are talented but somehow, they were not able
explore their potential during the studies. Bhumika, Anjali & Stuti are also good in several
things but were not able to perform as per their capacities. You all have incredible spart
within yourself. Had there been no corona pandemic, we would surely have been able to fire
it and see the sparkles that you all are capable of.
With a sense of pastness, we are all supposed to look forward towards future. Bygone is
bygone. No one can amend the past. But future is still in our hand, in our control. From the
pandemic year we learn to be ready for whatsoever befall on us. Without giving an iota of
doubt or an inch of hesitation, we shall be ready to live life it all its fullest capacity.
On behalf of Department of English, MKBU, I wish you all a great future.
Let yourself metamorphose into something so beautiful that we feel proud to say that ‘s/he is
our student’.

A Message from the Editors:
Editors of Memorabilia: Daya Vaghani, Riddhi Bhatt & Nidhi Jethava
The Documentation Committee Leaders feels a great honour to work on Memorabilia. This
Memorabilia contains students’ constructive interpretations or discussions on literature,
contemporary issues or general areas of interest. It has been an objective, and to give a message
with a brief and clear language is like reporting. Though it is a tedious and a hugely mammoth
task to keep a record of all the events activities of the academic year 2020-21, we enjoyed a lot in
filling the blank word document with all thus decorations of words, borders, text and rectifying
the errors. It was not only the process of collecting and compiling the data but it requires proper
29. 29 | Memorabilia 2021-22 Department of English, MKBU
word to word organization and edition of the collected data. While analysing students’ entries, a
professional, and anelegant approach is be followed. All students have avoided of rough,
pedantic, and pejorative expressions.
This time making memorabilia is a bit tough for us. In the documentation committee, we are
three leaders Daya Vaghani, Nidhi Jethava, and Riddhi Bhatt. At the initial stage, we were
confused because we all are tagged as Corona Batch and we haven’t had many activities. So
documentation committee leaders were worried but when they received committee reports so it
was so positive and we came to know that we did many activities. Making memorabilia is a new
and tough thing for us. Still, leaders did their best. This memorabilia includes information like..
Information about the department of English
Faculty members.

Various committee reports.
Creative corner of department students.
Achievements of department students.
The memory of the academic tour.
One of the most important things about this year's memorabilia is that we included information
about mix mode or hybrid classes, events, and celebrations. While preparing it we learned
lessons about the importance of documentation. It is not only about department but also about
life learning lesson too.
In all activities, events and reports, when question-response time was reached, it was a wonderful
experience to use the golden rule of objectivity which can also prove valid. It has not been
forgotten that authors of originalentries can be invited to respond to any criticisms.Apart from
the usual framework of Memorabilia, this year’s copy of the document also includes the
following matters:
1) Events organized in Hybrid Mode at Department of English.
2) The Information about Research Scholar who has done Ph.D in 2021-22
3) Workshop on Research Methodoly organized by Department of English for Dissertation
Writing.

The Committee Leaders presents their deep gratitude to Prof. Dilip Barad for his encouragement.
We are also thankful to all the committee leaders for their support and co-operation in the
process. It took planning and perseverance to prepare the memorabilia.

Not only is documentation an essential academic skill to be developed but it is also, as the above
quote suggests, an important lesson to be learnt about life.It Marks an important aspect of
learning. With this idea in mind, the Documentation Committee of Department of English,
functions rigorously to document not only the memories of the students but also their academic
achievements.

Today's digital age demands everything to be photographed. We all are keeping our regular diary
in the form of photographs. This photographing is not the final step but writing our expressions,
adding our own thought to any event of our life makes it more worthwhile.
Any work receives real success only when it is shared with the world. How will we come to
know after years what we were before five years? Well, remarkable evidence from the past can
serve as a piece of document to clarify our testimony! Similarly, at the Department of English,
we believe in overall development of students which can best be possible through interaction and
communication. Students utilize their interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, leadership skills, and
their talent to work collaboratively in making each and every day of department, the best
possible day to celebrate something productive.
Here, all the work is carried out into different groups. This classification is done not to make a
difference or divide students but to maintain the quality of the work. Even though each task is
done separately, the students have done each task together. The students are assigned 12
Committees and are given the role of leaders to plan, manage, maintain, organize, arrange-
rearrange, and fulfill the demands which the Committee is expected to. The main committee
which labours throughout the year by keeping a record of each and every event as well as in
drafting and shaping the memorabilia is the documentation Committee.
It is also the responsibility of the Documentation Committee to prepare memorabilia, which
includes each student’s academic and non-academic achievements. The method and medium of
documentation involve the use of social media platforms like Facebook.

There is no universally accepted definition of art. Although commonly used to describe something of

piece of handmade sculpture, and a mass-produced but visually attractive item. We might say that art
some kind of creative impulse - but this raises more questions: for example, how much
thought is required? If someone flings paint at a canvas, hoping by this action to create a work o
result automatically constitutes art?
The dictionary definition of art says that it is “the conscious use of skill and

But the thing about art is that it’s so diverse that there are as many ways to understand it as there
are people. That’s why there are scholars who give their own special definition of the word, such
the one penned by this famous Russian novelist, which goes:
“Art is the activity by which a person, having experienced an emotion, intentionally
transmits it to others”
– Leo Tolstoy
During his life, Tolstoy was known to write based on his life experiences, such as his most
famous work, “War and Peace” that used much of his experience during the Crimean War.And
whether or not his definition of art is the best, the point is that people look at art based on how
they have experienced it.
Any creative work of a human being
A form of expressing oneself
Resides in the quality of doing; the process is not magic
An act of making something visually entertaining
An activity that manifests the beauty
The mastery, an ideal way of doing things
Not a thing — it is a way (Elbert Hubbard)
The most intense mode of individualism that the world has known
Discovery and development of elementary principles of nature into beautiful forms
suitable for human use (Frank Lloyd Wright)
All art is but an imitation of nature.
-Lucius Annaeus Seneca
Why is Art Important?
Probably, the best theory that I like all which best explains – Why is art important – is from Van
Jones, subtly provides a great response to What is art? Van Jones presented a graph that
accurately represents the interaction between the four aspects of society and its different
members.
35. 35 | Memorabilia 2021-22 Department of English, MKBU
Art and its definition will always be controversial. There will always be debates about what art is
and what is not.But no matter what the definition may be, it has been around us for as long as
humans have existed (i.e. cave paintings, hieroglyphics).
Whether or not we are aware of it, we allow arts to affect our lives one way or another, and the
reasons why we make art are many! We use the arts for our entertainment, cultural appreciation,
aesthetics, personal improvement, and even social change. We use the arts in order to thrive in
this world.
In our Department we organized many activities for Art and
creativity. We organized this kind of activity with the aim
to increase the enthusiasm and to encourage them. so that
students get the chance to perform and become confident
and without fear they can perform. This way they get a
chance to show their talent.
Every situation gives us new opportunities to learn something
new and in that we are very lucky to be the students of the
Department of English, the place where each and every
student gets a chance to explore their thoughts and shine
themselves. Every year students get the chance to participate
in many events. In this year visited Shri Khodidas Parmar Art
Gallery, Spark event,Excel_expression event, Sociology
Department elocution competition,Elocution Compilation on Sardar Patel by Commerce
Department, Poetry Competition by Gujarati Department, Art exhibition and many other
activities.
In this year at the beginning of the year students visited Shri Khodidas Parmar Art Gallery on 26
Sept.2021. Shri Khodidas Parmar Art Gallery has held an exhibition on the paintings of Ajanta
Caves. Many artists displayed various paintings and art of the caves. Though the caves have
worn out, the artists have brought the beauty of these ancient caves through their artwork.
Swami Sahajanand school of management had organized #SPARK from 16th December to 19th
December 2021. Students of various Departments and Colleges have participated in numerous
activities.Students of our Department participate in rangoli, poetry, mehndi , face painting, book

colleges and Department has participated. From our department,..many students from sem 1 and

“Education is the most powerful weapon,
which you can use to change the world.”
- Nelson Mandela
These words of Nelson Mandela set the idea that with an education you can alter society for the
better. Education is usually thought of as a tool to help you learn to get a great career, but it is
more than just that. Education is the solution to many of the world’s problems as well as internal
problems. Most of history’s philosophers would agree with Nelson Mandela. They would say
that you can change with education.
Education will lead you far in every aspect of life. It can open many doors for you and you can
change politics on a global scale or on a personal level help you get a career to support yourself
and get the money that you can use to better your life and better the lives of those around you.
But the purpose of education is not just for jobs and money. The purpose of education is to better
your situation and to better yourself. Education is to help you become a righteous and virtuous
being and to help liberate yourself from the injustices that you face.

Every year, students in our Department have the opportunity to develop their ability to think and
speak by participating in DS. Our Department's daily schedule is a tradition, and we consider
ourselves extremely fortunate to be given the opportunity to work as leaders. And, of course, we
cannot forget the Corona, which provided us with a new opportunity to test our technological
abilities and skills.
We were labeled as a "corona batch" from the start of the semester, and the majority of our Ds
were done online. It was physically impossible to do the thing. As a result, we had completed
many special DS virtually. In between, we had the opportunity to physically organize many DS,
during which we learned how to set up a laptop and other things with the assistance of the ICT
committee. During the year, we completed 40 DS, including 9 special DS in Hybrid mode.
Here is a table of Special DS that we completed this year.
No. Date Name of DS Special
1. 4th August 2021 Sem -2 Exam Experience
2. 8th August 2021 Teacher's Day Experience
3. 13th September 2021 Learning Experience about Farewell

physically at the Department this time due to the Corona Pandemic. We had completed the
majority of the special DS in online mode.

Sem -2 Exam Experience
On this day sem 2 students share their experiences related to exams that what kind of
questions were there, and how much too difficult to write the paper at that time, also sir
gave the idea of that how can we write a paper to get some good grades.
Teacher's Day Experience
It was a very great experience because on this day students had made a personal
presentation and make a video of that and that what kind of difficulties were faced by the
students so it was a very good and tough experience that day.
Learning Experience about Farewell
The junior students gave a farewell to their seniors. On this day the best and most
important thing was to learn how to give a farewell. Also, there were students in the
English department who were seniors and had shared their learning experiences of that
two years.
Hindi Day Special
On this day students were coming with some information about the Hindi language and
also present their views see the Hindi language and what kind of idea to see that Hindi is
our main language to speak by the people the majority.
Sem -3 Results Experience
The day was fantastic because all the students got first class in this sem. Also, Dilip sir
talked too much about how results are not very important as learning so on this day
students had to share their experiences about the exam and paper.
Welcome Function
A daily schedule that is consistent and has step-by-step routines results in a predictable
day. Have a schedule that determines your priorities so that you can spend the appropriate
amount of time on that day. So, why do we have a Daily Schedule Committee and a daily
schedule every day? To answer the following question, I would say that in order to
50. 50 | Memorabilia 2021-22 Department of English, MKBU
improve our skills and gain knowledge of specific topics, we need a daily schedule. What
is the significance of various columns in the DS, as described in the following details:
Thought for the Day:
It gives new insight to begin the day with fresh, exciting ideas along with the
comprehensive lesson. Every individual has a new way to start their day in
that way new thoughts can be more effective to start a day with positively.
Vocabulary Drill
improves all areas of communication, listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. Helps to Expand a knowledge of words which provides unlimited
access: the new information.
News Reading
We have this important column in the Daily Schedule which provides a great
sense of educational value and knowledge of all the latest news and events
happening in the world. It carries information about politics, economy,
entertainment, sports, business, industry, trade, and commerce.
Poetry Recitation:
Poetry is a unique language that combines and uses words to convey meaning
and communicate ideas, feelings, sounds, gestures, signs, and symbols. It
helps us understand and appreciate the world around us. Poetry's strength lies
in it ability to shed a "sideways" light on the world.
Regional Literature
It will help us to value our language and understand our culture. By learning
& reading literary pieces from the regions, the power of the native tongue
intensifies the words and provides knowledge of the regions. Everyone always
comes with different and innovative literary pieces.
Personal Presentation
Personal presentation is just as important as a skill or qualification.
Overcoming the lack of self-esteem and confidence of the students helps to
convey their message effectively or fully utilize their skills and abilities
because of the way they present themselves.
51. 51 | Memorabilia 2021-22 Department of English, MKBU
Photograph of the day
We always preserve the important events, things, and people in our lives
Photography is a depiction of something with meaning. Photography is
important because it allows people to see the world from different
perspectives. Essentially, the purpose of photography is to communicate and
document moments in time, and also students can connect it with the various
events to share their experiences.
Singing
Singing is an important part of our life which makes us happy and fit!
improves your mood. It is very effective as a stress reliever if we are not good
at it. At least we like to listen to songs. Therefore students also can enhance
their singing skills.
Announcement
This column is for special announcements as well as to summarize a
discussion or point out something that the instructor wants to discuss with the
students to make them aware of certain events. Here are the charts of the
participation of students in DS during the year.

Our Professor Dr. Dilip Barad sir has profound knowledge in using ICT tools, particularly for
Language and Literature Learning. Throughout the year students use different ICT tools under
the guidance of Dr. Dilip Barad to make learning more engaging and effective. Along with the
Academic Syllabus, students showcase their talents in literary learning through different ICT
tools including Blogger, SlideShare, Google Sites, Scribd, Linked In, Google Classroom, Online
quiz, YouTube, E-portfolio, Webquest, etc.
The ICT Committee at our department is supposed to take care of all the technological
equipment which is used to make Computer-Assisted Literacy Learning possible. Things that
come under the supervision of the ICT Committee are taking care of laptops, keeping laptops
updated, and keeping the mic, podium, and projector ready for any guest lecture or Special class.
ICT Committee is also there to guide students in the usage of various ICT tools.

Virtual celebration of Teacher’s Day
Teachers are the foundation stones for
student's life. They hone the unexplored
skills of students and bring the best out of
them. While studying in the Department of
English at MK Bhavnagar University, we
learned the importance of integrating
technology into education. The future will
demand more dynamic, tech-savvy, and
versatile teachers. To meet the needs of the
future, this department caters to students
with a blend of technology-enabled study of
language and literature. So at our department
of English, we celebrated virtual teachers'
day. ITC tools helped to arrange things
perfectly. So in each part of our life ICT
tools helps alote and especially after
pandemic we all understand the importance
of ICT tools in academic life.
New Learning Mix Mode/Hybrid Events
As we all know that covid-19 is responsible for the disaster and because of covid our academic
life is more disturbed but it also provides us new opportunities to work with the digital world.
Our department of English also grab these opportunities and we learned to work online as well as
mix mode classes, events, and celebrations. Many events we did in mix mode so it was a great
experience for us. Here are some of the major glims connected with mix mode events.

Hindi Day Celebration Mix-Mode:
On September 14, India is celebrating Hindi Diwas, also known as
Hindi Day to mark the declaration of the Hindi language as an
official language in India. The then Union Government of India had
adopted Hindi as an official language of India on September 14,
1949. Hindi is the 3rd most spoken language in the world. We
celebrated this day on mixed-mode so some students were
physically presented and some of is were online. So with the help of ICT tools, this is only
possible.

Library Committee Report 2021-22
A library in the middle of a community is a cross between an emergency exit, a life-raft and
a festival. They are cathedrals of the mind; hospitals of the soul; theme parks of the
imagination. On a cold rainy island, they are the only sheltered public spaces where you
are not a consumer, but a citizen instead. —Caitlin Moran

Central Library visit of semester four students
We all sem 4 students visited our central library to review a
Ph.D. thesis. With our batch syllabus changed and we have
dissertation writing and for selecting topics and ideas about
the content and texture sir suggest us to look at the thesis. It
helps a lot and it's a very fruitful visit for us. We got the
idea as well as new things about our field. A process library

Book Pratha Visit
Reading is a very good habit that one needs to develop in life. Good books can inform you,
enlighten you and lead you in the right direction. There is no better companion than a good book.
Reading is important because it is good for your overall well-being.
Vinod Joshi sir has given the grant to the department_of_English to purchase books for our
library. He is an Indian poet, writer, and literary critic
in the Gujarati language from Gujarat, India. semester
2 4 students visited Bookpratha, Bhavnagar to
purchase books from his grant. We had purchased
many books of Gujarati Literature. It will be useful for
the department students. Because reading helps you to
develop positive thinking. Reading is important
because it develops your mind and gives you
excessive knowledge and lessons of life. It helps you understand the world around you better. It
keeps your mind active and enhances your creative ability. Sidney Sheldon perfectly describes:
“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and
