Social media tactics for your brand from lady gaga
1. Social Media Tactics for your Brand from Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has captured the attention of the music world and established her devoted fan base
across the globe. Seemingly beyond that, she serves as a case study for communications and
marketing professionals.
ThinkTank Digital served as the pop superstar's digital agency of record for two-and-a-half years,
ending in November 2010. The New York-based digital media agency, founded in 2006, develops
and executes plans to maximize online exposure for brands specializing in social media
promotions, online brand awareness, and application design and promotions.
The digital agency behind Lady Gaga was tapping into digital platforms to gain fan loyalty and
ultimately sell product in a way that's yielding success that few brands have done during those
times.
Today, Lady Gaga maintains her record as one of the top celebrities in every social media
platforms specifically Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter. Below are examples of social and digital
tactics to learn from and how you can generate some online excitement that propelled Lady Gaga
into the social spotlight over the years.
Go where your audience is
Lady Gaga has now more than 46 million Facebook fans and her Twitter followers exceed 18
million as of 01/2012. There’s no real advantage to having several platforms completely
independent of one another. Fragmenting your own audience for the sake of keeping up is not a
wise strategy. Pay close attention to which platforms you can leverage to help others grow in the
same ecosystem.
Personality
It's encouraged to add personality to posts/tweets so followers see a person behind the Twitter
handle. Lady Gaga once tweeted to her fans from her dressing room: “warming up for the show. i
can hear u screaming from my dressing room. little monsters.” This doesn’t mean reveal personal
details every moment. You just need to show you're human.
Consistency
You need to consult clients to be consistent and establish ongoing credibility with Twitter and also
other social media platforms and blogs. In Gaga's case, she tweets at least once a day, often
every few hours. Keep this in mind with clients. Tweeting only when you have an announcement,
new blog post or coverage isn’t going to accomplish much.

2. Authenticity
Social media is all about being authentic and transparent. This helps followers relate, connects
people and encourages dialogue. Be cautious to strike a balance, so you're not too transparent to
the point where it makes followers uncomfortable or may unveil negative info about the brand.
Digital distribution
The pop icon streams her music and videos for fans at no-cost on sites like Facebook, VEVO and
YouTube. They're also channeling blogs and music sites most specifically a link to purchase and
download on Itunes or any online music stores.
Exclusivity
These people know the business of exclusivity when launching their product.
Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video with Beyonce on March 11, 2010 during the show’s 11:30
p.m. broadcast. The video then made its online debut at midnight that evening on VEVO.com and
LadyGaga.com before it was released elsewhere. This was all announced days prior via a press
release on PR Newswire. Tweet estimates are at 28K and it has been shared on Facebook 121K
times, according to the widget on LadyGaga.com. YouTube page views are more than 27K to date.
While Lady Gaga's tactics may not be a fit for every brand out there, her social strategy fits well to
how a client and customer cooperation would be and she has the proven music sales to back them
up. As marketing and/or communications professionals, we should look on her larger strategy as
an example to drive sales of a product or service. Above all, know our target audience, where they
are, and what they want.
