Statement of purpose is not justified by the conclusion. The
3. conclusion does not support the claim made. Argument is
incoherent and uses noncredible sources.
Sufficient justification of claims is lacking. Argument lacks
consistent unity. There are obvious flaws in the logic. Some
sources have questionable credibility.
Argument is orderly, but may have a few inconsistencies. The
argument presents minimal justification of claims. Argument
logically, but not thoroughly, supports the purpose. Sources
used are credible. Introduction and conclusion bracket the
thesis.
Argument shows logical progression. Techniques of
argumentation are evident. There is a smooth progression of
claims from introduction to conclusion. Most sources are
authoritative.
Clear and convincing argument presents a persuasive claim in a
distinctive and compelling manner. All sources are
authoritative.

CHE 1101 Fall 2014 Name
_______________________________
I have neither given nor received help on this exam from anyone
except Dr. Brenner.
Merck’s Vioxx is a COX-2 type inhibitor that has proven to be
highly effective as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller.
In fact, it was the only medication that was effective for my
father’s headaches before it was discontinued because the
lawyers for several patients’ families alleged that Vioxx caused
their clients’ loved ones to have heart attacks or strokes and, in
some cases, die. There is some justification for this allegation,
as Vioxx does cause blood platelets to stick together. The
synthesis of Vioxx is as follows:
Step 1: Aluminum chloride catalyst is completely dissolved in
an excess of benzene, which reacts via Friedel-Crafts alkylation
9. -butyrolactone (also called 2-oxacyclopentanone) as
shown below.
Step 2: After recovering and recycling all excess catalyst and
reactants from step 1, the product from step 1 undergoes a
dehydrogenation/lactonization (ring closing) reaction in a fixed
bed reactor at 600oC over a Cr2O3 catalyst. Note that because
the reaction is in a fixed bed reactor, the Cr2O3 is not contained
in the product stream from step 2. The main product is purified,
and the reactant is recycled to the beginning of step 2. The
leftover hydrogen, after separation from the main product and
the reactant, is sold as a secondary product. Assume that the
main product and the reactant in Step 2 have no measurable
vapor pressure, so that the separation of the hydrogen from
them is straightforward.
+ H2
Step 3: The main product from step 2 is once again exposed to
aluminum chloride catalyst dissolved in an excess of benzene.
This mixture reacts via Friedel-Crafts alkylation again to yield
the three-ring compound below. Excess benzene, aluminum
chloride, and reactant are recycled to the beginning of step 3,
after separation from the three-ring product from step 3.
Step 4: The three-ring product from step 3 is then reacted via
Friedel-Crafts acylation (not alkylation) with a mixture of yet
10. more aluminum chloride catalyst dissolved in chloroform
(CHCl3), and methylsulfonyl chloride. The Vioxx product is
finally purified from the reactants, solvent, and catalyst, all of
which are recycled to the start of Step 4.
1) (25 pts.) Create a Microsoft Word file named
yourlastnameexam1no1.doc (e.g. brennerexam1no1.doc) that
contains a questions & issues sheet for the synthesis of Vioxx.
Credit will be assigned for specificity, depth of insight, and
creativity of the questions asked, thoroughness of category
coverage, identification of the most important issues, and the
number of questions asked.
2) (55 pts.) Based on your questions & issues sheet, develop
a thoroughly process flowsheet for the synthesis of Vioxx in
Microsoft PowerPoint, and save the file as
yourlastnameexam1no2.ppt. Label as thoroughly as possible.
Purge feeds as necessary. If there are any waste products,
recycle them, incinerate them, or explain why they are not
hazardous. Recycle wherever possible. Separations are not
specified, but are necessary. During your first attempt at this
problem, I highly recommend just putting in generic separations
units, and then before turning in your first draft, describing the
potential separations options. Students can ask for any number
of clarifications. Please allow 24 hours for feedback.
BONUS (2 pts.) Use Isis/Draw to draw Vioxx. Right click on
Draw23.exe to save it after going to
http://my.fit.edu/~jbrenner/che11012/Applications/
name = fltech password = brenner
3) (5 pts.) Go to an appropriate web site to find the MSDS for
benzene. What organs inside you, if any, are target organs, for
11. benzene? Save the MSDS information for benzene as a .pdf file.
Find the concentration of benzene in a well-ventilated room that
would be 20% of the lower explosive limit (LEL). Would it be
safe to breathe that high a concentration of benzene? Report
your results in yourlastnameMSDS.doc.
4) (5 pts.) Perform an advanced search using
http://www.bing.com on Vioxx AND COX-2 AND inhibitor
AND legal AND “heart attack”, and report the number of hits
(results) for such a search in a file you name
yourlastnamewebsearch.doc. Put the words “heart attack” in the
exact phrase dialog box when doing the search. Your answer
should be between 10,000 and 1,000,000 hits.
5) (5 pts.) Create a WinZip file named yourlastname.zip
containing all of your files.
6) (5 pts.) Send the WinZip file to [email protected] as an
e-mail attachment.
