John Updike's A & P
John Updike's highly popular and studied short story "A&P" was published in the New Yorker in
1961. It told a story of a young man's decision to quit his job at an A&P supermarket after an
encounter with three bikini–clad girls. The story, seemingly mundane and trivial, exemplifies the
type of social context which Updike was widely inspired by. During the story's writing, there were
many elements of societal culture which influenced Updike in his work. This is evident in his usage
of specific world references, colloquialisms, and particular societal movements in his story. In
"A&P", Updike showcased some elements of popular middle class life, thoughts, and movements of
the `60s. In search for inspiration for "A&P", Updike found it in the ... Show more content on

As Jack De Bellis describes Updike's writing style in his book, the John Updike Encyclopedia,
Updike "always contains a desire to describe perfectly an aspect of experience that will be
acknowledged by others as the way we live". This is one of the reasons why Updike included
specific world references in his story. During the time period Updike was writing, there were
specific events that affected the way people thought. An instance where this is represented can be
seen in Sammy's statement "...maybe in 1990 when it's called the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki
Tea company or something" (Updike 142). During the time Updike wrote the story, there was
tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the Cold War. Sammy believing the A&P
supermarket would be renamed due to a Soviet Union takeover is evidence of the middle–class
American thoughts during the time. As world references like this are included, it shows that the
1960s middle class carried much influence on the

Analysis of John Updike's Stories: 'A&P' vs. 'Outage'
In "Outage" and "A&P," John Updike attempts to explore different facets of suburban life through
ordinary and common events. In "A&P," Updike explores how innocent ignorance influences a
young cashier named Sammy and his views of suburbia. On the other hand, "Outage" explores the
seething underbelly of suburbia and the events that occur when no one is looking, or in this case,
when the lights go out. Through each work, Updike counters innocence with knowledge and
rebellion against submission. In "A&P," Sammy is initially drawn to three girls, Queenie, Plaid, and
Big Tall Goony Goony, perusing the grocery store and while he is drawn to the leader of the group,
Queenie, he soon begins to note how they are a contrast of what middle–class suburbanites consider
to be acceptable. Sammy notes, You know, it's one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on the
beach, where what with the glare nobody can look at each other much anyway, and another thing in
the cool of the A & P, under the fluorescent lights, against all those stacked packages, with her feet
paddling along naked over our checkerboard green–and–cream rubber–tile floor. ("A&P") One of
the things that is interesting about Sammy's observation is that the girls are judged harshly because
of how they are perceived "under the fluorescent lights." Ironically, it can be argued that the general
public's disapproval of the girls can be due to the "house–slaves in pin curlers" jealousies. The girls
are representative of

A & P By John Updike Analysis
John Updike aims "to give the mundane its beautiful due" in his works, and this is shown in "A & P"
by how he writes about an ordinary day, in this case in a grocery store, and makes the whole aspects
of that normal event interesting with vivid details so that the readers can see the beauty of life,
which others may easily just think is mundane or dull. His also focuses on the life of a young 19–
year–old man, Sammy, working at the A & P store, having a normal day until he sees three girls
wearing bathing suits and breaking the store's policy by wearing bathing suits. When the manager,
Lengel, comes in the store and tells the girls they need to be decent and embarrassed them, Sammy
shows an act of rebellion and quits his job. Sammy felt that he needed to go forth with his action,
but in the end, he goes through a feeling of ambiguity and wonder of what life has in store for him in
the future to come, just like how any young man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he saw the girls in the store, he points out every detail of the girls' physical appearances and
provides creative insights, based on what he sees, about the people he encounters. For example,
when she finally heard Queenie say that her mother had asked her to pick up a jar of herring snacks,
hearing the tone of her voice immediately made him imagine Queenie's living room with her father
and other people in there socializing and eating. Sammy also has negative aspects about his
personality and attitude as he seems to look at the customers as sheep and thinks badly about his
coworker, Stokesie. Sammy quits and rebels because he wanted to impress the girls and seems to
have the urge to be admired in his life, and his desires to make new experiences and escape his dull
life sparked when he set eyes on Queenie and imagined her sophisticated and high–level

The Characters Of Maturity In John Updike's A & P
In the short story A&P, Sammy the main protagonist how he changes from a childish teen to a
person that stands up for what he believe is right. The theme in the story that stood out to me the
most was maturity. This story is a coming of age how Sammy grows though out the story. Sammy
makes an immature chose that he believes is the right to do. But, Sammy good action goes
unnoticed by Queenie and her friends. As a result he is left to deal with his chose that he has made.
In "A&P," John Updike shows that Sammy's immaturity stems from his crude personality, sexist
beliefs, and irresponsible attitude. To Start, Sammy first displays crudeness throughout the story is
he demonstrates little respect for experience and age. On one instance, he claims the fifty–year old
woman, who yells at him for ringing her crackers up twice. While he is gauging at the girls, is a
"witch ... [who] if she'd been born at the right time they would have burned her over in Salem." He
should have some respect for her, not only because of the principle that she is a elder but she is also
a women. Sammy claims that the only charastics between him and Stokesie , is that Stokesie has
"two babies chalked up on his fuselage." His rude reference to Stokesie's manliness and his failure
to acknowledge his life experience displays Sammy's complete immaturity. When Sammy makes the
impulsive choice to quits his job, and speaks rudely to his boss Lengel. It is only after Sammy has
quit and openly deny Lengel that

Summary Of A & P By John Updike
The story "A & P" by John Updike constructs a simply characterized, a transition from childhood to
adulthood, searing honest and often wildly funny thoughts of a 19–year old grocery store clerk at a
small town in New England. Eventually teenager develop easily the capacity for falling in a

beginning, the narrator itself is the main character of the story, it's Sammy. He talks about the 'sheep'
or followers in his town. To him, everybody acts and dresses the same way. But one day, three girls
in bathing suits came into the store and making spectacle to themselves and Sammy immediately
notices the most attractive and elegant, he named her "Queenie". The three girls, led by Queenie ...

Sammy suddenly sees how a girl from her world must be like a crummy place run by crummy
people. Lengel then left and told Sammy to ring them up. Sammy finished the checking out of the
girls. Sammy believes that they embarrass the girls and offended by the manager's disregard for the
3 girls. He removed his apron and bow tie and resigned on the spot despite the pain this would cause
his parents. Lengel asks him if he said something and he repeats that he quit, saying "you didn't have
to embarrass them." Lengel says the girls were the one embarrassing them. The narrator mentioned
that Lengel is a friends of his parents and to make him think about his decision, Lengel tells him
how disappointed his parent will be, saying, "you'll feel this for the rest of your life." Sammy
seemingly leaves and looks for the girls but they'd left, not bothering to see his chivalry–and even if
they did they probably would not have cared. He sees the store from the outside with Lengel,
looking hard and cold, and says, as the last lines, "my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the

The Sheep Revolution in John Updike´s A&P
At first glance, "A&P" written by John Updike, looks like a funny, slangy, youthful story about a
young, nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who has the normal problems that come along with his age
group; abhorrence for his job, talking despondently about the older generation, and dreaming about
girls he sees in the store. However, when people look at the history of the 1960's, they find it shows
a change in American social values and morals. Furthermore, the revolution of multiple groups of
minorities through the civil rights movement, such as women, gays, and African Americans just to
name a few who were at the forefront of issues during the 1960's. Also, there was a revolt caused
from the distrust of politicians, and from the 1950's "family ... Show more content on

One of the biggest social groups that had some of the major impacts during the 1960's were the
youths in America, consisting of late teens to the late twenties. However, others that fell into that
age group had already cemented their future with earlier choices in their lives. For example, the
checker that worked next to Sammy, his name was Stokesie, a young twenty–two year old who was
already married with two children. Stokesie also holds the belief that he will become store manager
someday, which fit the mold of the start from the bottom and only with hard work can one move up
style of the out dated ideologies of the past decade. Stokesie represents everything from the 1950's
"suburbiaism" that the youth revolution of the 1960's was against. Many have argued that this story
has a feminist undertone to the main idea. Conceding, that going into public is a bit bold, especially
for the time period shows somewhat of a revolt by the girls. Although, someone can contend that if a
girl or girls went into a grocery store in a bikini during today's time, it would result in the same sort
of reaction. One can also argue that the story is condescending toward women and shows them in a
negative light. Especially, from the main character Sammy, with his description of the girls, also the
nick names he gives the three girls like Plaid, Big Tall Goony–Goony, and Queenie. Moreover, the
assumptions about how a girls

Misfits Analysis
Both Richard Donner's 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies written by Steven Spielberg, and Rob
Reiner's 1986 coming–of–age drama Stand By Me based on Stephen King's novella The Body,
portray several characters to be misfits in society. The Goonies follows the story of a group of
misfits on a treasure hunt to save their home from foreclosure and Stand By Me is a writer's recount
of the death of a friend and a boyhood journey to find the missing body of Ray Bowers. Narrative
perspective, sound, characterisation, camera angles, and symbolism, contribute to various themes
which Donner and Reiner exploit to evoke supportive emotion for misfits.
In diverse methods, both directors seek to engender support for their misfits by the pursuit of their
stories through differing perspectives. Donner refrains from applying narration and solely relies on
dialogue, conversely, Reiner reveals elements of his characters through the eyes of Gordie
Lachance, in first person narration. The lack of narration in The Goonies allows a viewer to
experience the journey of the misfits through a neutral and an unfiltered perspective. Donner
exposes his viewers to the perspective of several characters, which provides him the opportunity to
create characters which relate with the numerous circumstances and personalities of viewers. The
connection a viewer feels towards a character, lulls them to view matters similarly. Dissimilarly, first
person narration provides Reiner the opportunity to immerse his

Disrespectful Character Maturity In John Updike's A & P
In John Updike's coming of age story "A&P," the protagonist Sammy sees what he believes to be an
unfair act to three teenage girls in bikini in the grocery store. He makes an immature decision and
quits in front of his manager that decided to address the girls about their clothing choice in front of
the entire grocery store, instead of talking to them in private. Unfortunately, the teenage girls do not
notice Sammy's heroic act, and he is left alone in the parking lot to face the repercussions of his
childish actions. John Updike chooses to write in first–person, so the reader gets to know the
narrator's real character. In his short story "A&P," John Updike demonstrates that Sammy is an
immature character immaturity from his disrespectful personality, judgmental attitude, and
misogynist beliefs.
To begin with, Sammy shows a rude attitude through the story. He indicates little regard for other
people's age or knowledge. To illustrate, Sammy asserts the old aged customer, who reprimands
Sammy for scanning her item two times while he is gawking at the girls, is "a witch about fifty ...
[who] would have burned her over in Salem" (Updike 320). Sammy's despise toward this old lady–
in fact shoppers–is perceptible. Also, when Sammy quits A&P, he talks discourteously to his
manager Lengel. The readers soom comes to discover that Lengel is a friend of Sammy's parents.

A & P By John Updike Analysis
The story "A&P" by John Updike has a lot of examples of point of view. The story starts off by
saying "In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'm in the third checkout slot..."which tells
us right away that the story is set in a grocery store and that the story is being told through the eyes
of a grocery store clerk . There are some people who could probably figure out that it was set in a
grocery store based on the title but, since the company became defunct in November of 2015 it's
easy to guess that the store wasn't getting as much revenue as it used to back in 1962 when the story
was written. He then goes on to describe the scene around him and how the presence of the girls
throws off his usual work jive. This is very clear because most of the first part of the story is full of
the narrator just describing the way the girls look in vivid detail. He describes one of the girls as the
queen because she pretty much herds the other two around and looks like she holds herself above
the other to, which he conveniently nicknames Queenie. The other two girls he describes as less
attractive as Queenie but not unattractive. They end up also getting nicknames but, not until later
into the story. He calls the girl in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

walk out feeling uncomfortable. As the girls are walking out of the store Sammy, thinking he is

Characters Transition into an Adult
As people will say growing up sucks, you finally realize you aren't a kid anymore. In the coming of
age film, you see the main character emotionally transition into a adult. What makes the coming of
age film special is the relationship the protagonist has with his or her group of friends. The coming
of age film differs in friendships, depending on the gender of the main character. The friendships
help shape how the protagonist is going to be by the end of the film, usually in a positive light.
When the films characters are predominantly woman the film is usually emotional and sarcastic. The
female friendships are not usually compromised and the girls are often loyal to a fault. In the film

Thesis For A & P By John Updike
Essay 1: "A&P" Have you ever seen people just talk about the "point of view" as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
person? Well the point of view is more important than you might think, the point of view sets the
whole story together because without the point of view we wouldn't be able to know who is talking
or how the main character feels. "A & P" is a great example of "point of view". (Thesis statement)–
In this short/Humorous story, "A & P", John Updike includes lots of details on how the viewer's
perspective of the situation matters since the situation mostly surrounds the speaker throughout the
story and main details happen because of them and involves them. Sammy, the main character
talking in the story, gives lots of details to what he sees and what he thinks. He describes the three
girls (Queenie, Plaid, and Big Tall Goony Goony) as wearing only bikinis, how their face looked,
and how they act. Sammy notice all the features of the three girls and explained it very
understandable. " The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two–piece. She

Analysis of A&P by John Updike
"A&P" (supermarket) is a short story written by the hardworking and highly productive John
Updike and narrated in first person by a 19–year–old protagonist and cashier named Sammy. It was
published in 1961 and is about Sammy's change of character and coming of age. Updike uses the
various shifts in tone, great attention to detail, and a great deal of symbolism to portray the
significant change. The opening sentence " In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits" (par.1)
sets up the colloquial tone; it's as if Sammy was talking to a friend. As the story goes on, the tone
shifts from being informal to a little comical. He refers to the people in the checkout lane as "sheep"
and "scared pigs in a chute." However, by the end the tone shifts yet again and becomes heroic. The
act of quitting a job (climax) in defiance of Lengel's (manager and antagonist) unfair treatment of
the girls is a strong indication of change in character. Sammy hoped the girls would notice his act of
heroism. Ironically, the girls do not hear him. Instead, they head out forever disappearing from his
life. Sammy's description of A&P (setting) gives a dull and conventional illustration. On the
contrary, the description of the girls was sharp and bright, characterizing him as a typical hormone–
driven teenager. He describes the first girl, Plaid (nickname), as a "chunky kid, with a good tan"
dressed in a bright green plaid two–piece bathing suit (par. 1). The second girl, Big Tall

Conflict In John Updike's A & P
"'You'll feel this for the rest of your life,' Lengel says, and I know that's true, too." A & P is a short
story by author John Updike. The story is simple, exquisitely put together, and fantastically detailed.
It is told from the character Sammy's point of view. It is set in the A & P supermarket. Basically
what happens is, these three girls come into the store wearing only bathing suits, which presents the
conflict. Sammy describes them and follows their movements around the store. He gives them
names including, Plaid, Big Tall Goony Goony, and Queenie. He took a particular liking to Queenie.
When the manager Lengel took notice and began to berate the girls for their attire, which presents
the crisis, Sammy didn't appreciate it (for he had started to feel somewhat responsible for them). He

Essay about Contrast of Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” and John...
Contrast of Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl" and John Updike's "A&P" "A&P" and "Girl" both symbolized
the protagonists' oppression by an older, more experienced generation. However, Kincaid's "Girl"
was artistic with an undercurrent of selfless love and hope while Updike's "A&P" was uninspiring
with selfishness and lust. The protagonist of "Girl" discouraged her daughter's dreams out of love.
The protagonist of "A & P" encouraged the antagonists' out of a selfish desire for self–promotion.
The short story "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid was a bittersweet warning from a mother to her daughter.

He describes the girls' bodies in terms of the physical features most notable by first glances,
including a reference of one girl being overweight with a large, but attractive rear end (Updike 561).
I was thoroughly disgusted when he compared a woman's empty mind with a buzzing bee in a glass
jar (Updike 561). The girl referred to as "the queen" is the object most attracted by his affection and
his roving eyes. "There was nothing between the top of the suit and the top of her head except her...it
was more than pretty" (Updike 561). At the end of the story, the narrator refers to the "Big Tall

Queenie's breasts to raw scoops of vanilla ice cream (Updike 563). When he loudly announces his
intentions to quit his job, the narrator is upset that the girls don't seem to notice or appreciate him
and he seems disappointed to find "his girls" gone from the parking lot and his life without noticing
his martyrdom (Updike 564). I was offended as I imagined this was a stand easily taken by many

What Does Mikey Believe In The Goonies?
Mikey Welsh is one of the main characters in The Goonies, he could be considered the connecting
link between the rag tag group of kids who call themselves the goonies. Mikey has a jovial and
childlike personality in the opening scenes of the film which he expresses in many ways. While
exploring the attic of Mikey's home the goonies run across a treasure map which explains the legend
of the infamous one eyed Willie and his lost treasure. Mikey full heartedly believes the treasure map
and the stories his father used to tell him about one eyed Willie, while his older brother and friends
remain skeptical. This blind childlike faith mixed with the dreams of adventure capture the jovial

And what motivates him to seriously peruse this despite mild disapproval from his friends? Through
watching the film and careful analysis of the characters I found that Mikey's actions stem from two
things. One is blind faith in his parents, he strongly believes that his father would never lie to him.
And two is the troubling circumstances surrounding his family, he sees a need to stop a pending
foreclosure as the only solution to the dire situation.
The faith and belief of a child can be very powerful things, in the film The Goonies Mikey displays
many childlike qualities which are contributing factors his strong belief in the legend of one eyed
Willie and his pursuit of the pirate's treasure. In an opening scene of the film the goonies stumble
upon a treasure map, this mixed with the bed time stories from Mikey's father creates a strong belief
in the legend of one eyed Willie for Mikey. The other goonies and Mikey's older brother are

The Goonies Movie Analysis
"The Goonies" is a movie I never really enjoyed. Although it wasn't my favorite movie, it was an
interesting movie in the fact that the goonies never gave up. They could have accepted the fact that
their house would be lost but, they instead found a way to save it. Never giving up is the key to
success. Sometimes you don't have to accept the inevitable. My favorite character in the movie were
the two kids, Mikey and Brandon Walsh. They loved their home so much that they were able to
change the circumstances they were in. They could have given up and just sat there, doing nothing.
Also, they didn't have to give their parents the money to save the house. They could have kept in for
themselves. If I was put into that situation I would have tried

Exploring The Mind Of A 1960s Teenage Boy
Paper II Draft III Exploring the Mind of a 1960s Teenage Boy "A&P" (1961), written by John
Updike, explores the social conventions of the early 1960s and delves into the mind of a teenage boy
named Sammy. Over the decades, occurrences that are considered socially "acceptable" have
changed drastically. For example, in 2015, it is nearly commonplace to spy girls walk into stores in
just their bathing suits–even in Thomasville, Georgia, despite the fact that the town is two hours
from the nearest beach. However, in the 1960s, the much more conservative time in which the story
"A&P" is set, such an act was quite scandalous. The short story tells of one summer day when three
teenage girls wandered into a small–town A&P grocery store, wearing ... Show more content on

tall one, with black hair that hadn't quite frizzed right, and one of those sunburns right across under
the eyes, and a chin that was too long (19)..." This girl he refers to as "Big Tall Goony–Goony"
because not only was she tall, but she appeared to fit his prototype ("imagined appearance"–yes, I'm
bringing psychology into my paper) a "goon." Finally, Sammy spotted "...the third one, that wasn't
quite so tall. She was the queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking around and making
their shoulders round (19)." True to the way he described her, Sammy called this girl "Queenie"
because she appeared to be the leader of the group–their queen. It was immediately obvious that
Sammy was drawn to this girl because while he briefly described the other two, he spent a large
amount of time throughout the story describing and assessing the character of Queenie. Throughout
the story, Sammy is quick to make inferences on the people's personalities, including the girls. When
Sammy first noticed the girls, he inferred that Queenie was the leader, and "...you get the idea she
had talked the other two into coming in here with her, and now she was showing them how to do it,
walk slow and hold yourself straight (19)." Sammy viewed these girls as if they were extremely

the 80's. Remember the Superman movies starring Christopher Reeves and the Wonder Woman
television series from the 80s (I grew up in the 80s)? Since we are speaking about films based on
classic childhood favorites, I have another example to add: Goonies. A group of five boys (the
Goonies) live in a town scheduled for demolition but this clique refuses to give up without a fight.
When these Goonies discover One–eyed Willie's hidden treasure map they depart from their normal
life to hunt his treasure in hopes of being able to save their parent's homes. Now,

David Grusin's On Golden Pond
David Grusin is the composer for On Golden Pond. He was the composer for The Graduate and The
Goonies which are films that I recognized but have not yet seen. I selected On Golden Pond because
I had not heard of the movie beforehand. The 1980s was full of electronic music; however, this film
featured no electronic pop. The film is only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film focuses on an
older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named Billy, I believe the
score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of piano and strings are
apparent in both films.
From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the
scenery. It was gentle and non–threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano,
and this is when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues
to be soft. This reassured me that the movie would not be dark or overwhelming. The theme music

This noise is natural and allows the scene to seem realistic, but the music returns when the man goes
into the house and reflects on the items in the household. Throughout the film this transition from
nature to On Golden Pond's theme occurs often. This changeover generally indicated a change in
scene or a resolution to a conflict. There were few moments of conflict where the music fills with
brass sounds and takes on a tense feeling. For example, when the main character goes for a walk in
the woods, I appreciate that the music is heard throughout his walk, it sounds like a harp, other
strings, and woodwind instruments. The audience can hear the leaves crunching and birds; however,
when the music becomes faster and takes on lower pitches, one truly feels the man's stress of
becoming lost in the forest. Additionally, the shift from soft to loud occurs frequently throughout the

Differences Between Stand By Me And The Goonies
There are many 1980's movies about kids going on adventures, but Stand by Me and The Goonies
are two movies that took the idea of the average adventure movie and made it more relatable to
many different audiences. They are both about young, outcasted children, primarily boys, going on a
life–changing adventure with their close friends, but the movies are narrated differently. Stand by
Me and The Goonies offer two very different approaches to the classic "coming–of–age" genre; the
storylines differ greatly because Stand by Me is more serious and realistic, while The Goonies is
hilariously unrealistic and more about the fun of the adventure. Unlike The Goonies, Stand by Me
has many more serious moments, making this movie more relatable to ... Show more content on

The characters in Stand by Me are also very realistic and relatable to the average person. Even
though The Goonies are about kids who are outcasts, the kids in Stand by Me are closer to the actual
definition of an outcast, which is someone who has been rejected by society. Specifically the
character Chris Chambers, who is a perfect example of an outcast. Because his family has a bad
name, he has been labeled as the problem child in the town. Although he has done many bad things,
he is blamed for things that he has not done, which makes him relatable to many children. In The
Goonies, the kids are relatable in a way but Stand by Me's characters go deeper than that. The
Goonies is a hilariously unrealistic movie about a group of young friends searching for a treasure–
filled pirate ship, setting off many booby traps, and running away from money–hungry criminals. In
this movie, a group of young boys find a treasure map in an attic and go on an adventure to save
their neighborhood from being replaced by a golf course. Although there are a few moments in this
movie that could be serious, those moments are quickly changed back to the movie's normal
humerus and fun–loving demeanor. In The Goonies there are many ridiculous booby traps that the
famous pirate One–Eyed Willie set up that the group of friends ran into multiple times. The very

A & P By John Updike
Paper 1: A&P by John Updike
In this essay I will be reviewing the six elements of fiction: point of view, plot, setting,
characterization, symbolism, and theme in the story, A&P by John Updike, to see how it constitutes
to the work as a whole.
Sammy, a 19–year–old cashier at the A&P, narrates A&P. In this first–person narrative, the narrator
tells us everything as he sees it, but since it is a limited point of view the narrator is unreliable. But
this allows the reader to notice growth in the character and it helps demonstrate how the narrator is
different than the people around him, as his actions suggest. We notice a change in the point of view
as the story progresses. At first we see the narrator complaining about the conformity in his society
then later acknowledges the problem and acts on it. This occurs with the introduction of the girls,
who are seen as mocking the conformity by wearing bathing suits into A&P. Seeing this, the narrator
tries to show support for this act unconformity by quitting his job at A&P removing his bow tie and
apron in the process when he feels the girls were mistreated and asked to leave store. With the
introduction of the issue of conformity, which is a serious issue, we still notice the use of humor and
irony in the tone though at the end even though the narrator felt he did the right thing by pointing
out that the way the girls were treated was wrong and quitting his job, but he was left lost as his act
was seen unnoticed, ending the story

John Updike's A & P
In the short story "A&P" by John Updike, we are witnesses to a young man named Sammy and his
encounter with "three girls in nothing but bathing suits" as well as the general manager of the store,
Lengel, who Sammy describes as a pretty dreary, observant Sunday school teacher. At first glance,
the short story seems to be just that, but when taking a closer look, we can see that throughout the
story Updike expresses two different themes: desire and the power it wields and the mystery of other
minds. But what does Updike hope to convey to us, the readers, with these themes? As soon as
"Queenie", "Plaid", and "Big Tall Goony–Goony" walk into the A&P they demonstrate their power
of sexuality over all of the men in the store, attracting each and every eye in the building. The three

What Does Dill Mean In To Kill A Mockingbird
Throughout reading To Kill a Mockingbird, we have witnessed various character traits from Dill

various traits Dill portrays are clearly defined within the second half of the book, when matters in

to Dill's traits after hearing Miss Rachel's reaction to the Tom Robinson trial, and while Dill and the

A Story Quitting My Job Due to Mistreatment Essay
Grow Up Already!
Not many people would dare to stand up for what is considered "right" anymore. In Updike's A&P,
Sammy stands up for three girls and quits his job. It all takes place in a town just north of Boston
during the 1960's in a grocery store called A&P where Sammy works. One day three girls walk in
with just swimsuits on, which is forbidden, and he just drools over them like the immature boy he is.
By the time the girls are ready to check out the manager, Lengel, comes to tell them that their
shoulders must be covered. Sammy does not like the way Lengel speaks to them so he quits his job
but by the time he goes outside to meet the girls they were already gone. Sammy's compulsion to

At that precise moment he realized what a terrible mistake he had just made and all for nothing
because the girls had already left. He quit his job all because of some girls. Sammy did not think
things through and now has to face the consequences of not having a job. All that is left to do after
such a mistake is to learn from that experience and not let it happen in the future.
The theme of A&P is about maturity, acting without thinking and standing up for others. Sammy
displayed a great amount of immaturity while the three girls were inside the store picking up the
Herring snacks for the grandmother. When he first spotted the girls he could not stop looking at
them and accidently scanned a customer's item twice; the customer was infuriated. He described the
girls in great detail and gave them nicknames based on how they looked which is a little immature
for a 19 year old. If Sammy had thought about his job as he did about those girls he would have kept
his job. The fact that he quit his job just because of some girls proves that he is immature. But he
deserves some respect because he stood up for the girls when the manager embarrassed and
criticized them. This is just something that Sammy had to experience in order to become more
mature and learn from his mistakes.

Consequences And Symbolism In John Updike's A & P
In "A&P", the author John Updike utilizes symbolism, point of view, setting, and imagery to convey

immature decisions that he believes that's what adults do. But what he thinks is an act of courage
and chivalry doesn't catch Queenie and her friends' attention, but he still facing the consequences of
his child–like behavior. Throughout the story the author John Updike depicts Sammy's character as
someone judgmental towards other people. Such as his co–workers, customers and even family. He's
constantly judging others, whether it be their looks or their way of being; "She's one of those cash–

that this woman has nothing better to do with her daily life than to be there to bother him. In
addition, Sammy also refers to one of his coworker's attitude towards the girls. Sammy seems to be
criticizing them; forgetting that he himself has been doing the same thing to the girls since they
walked in the store. "All that was left for us to see was old McMahon patting his mouth and looking
after them sizing up their joints." He later goes on and says he's starting to feel sorry for the girls.

A + P Feminism
Feminism in the 1960s There is an apparent biased view against women in the short story "A+P" by
John Updike. Society is male–dominated and women are discriminated against, whether they know
it or not. Such a restrictive culture and societal views are indicated by the inner thoughts of the
narrator, Sammy, who is the clerk at the supermarket. The interactions of three girls with the rest of
the townspeople are documented in Sammy's mind. Sammy's descriptions of people, the dialect of
the characters, and the actions that are noted converge to reveal the nature of the time and place of
the A+P supermarket. The majority of the story takes place in 19–year–old Sammy's mind. Here he

Furthermore, the girls only speak when spoken to. This all indicates that the men of the society in
"A+P" assume a superior role over the females. It is prudent not to miss the fact that the only time
dialect is directed at the girls is when it is coming from a male and is against them, i.e. against what
they are wearing and where they are, and there are no niceties towards the girls in this conversation
in any way, shape, or form. The only occurrence of anyone defending the girls is when they have
already been discriminated against and have exited the premises. The actions/interactions/reactions
of the characters in this small setting also point to a female– suppressed environment. The males
have the gall to stare openly at the girls as they go about their errands, while the women are shocked
and "their eyes snapped back" to their respective business. Some might argue that this is normal for
men to stare while the same sex–oriented people quickly avert their gazes. However, this is also
indicative of a patriarchy. The status of the characters also indicates that even the store, an
insignificantly small thing, follows the status quo of society. The males are the only ones with jobs,
while the females are commented to be "houseslaves." The naming of the characters is also blatantly
slanted against the females. Sammy gives the three girls names instead of taking the time to ask
them if they even have

  • 3. John Updike's A & P John Updike's highly popular and studied short story "A&P" was published in the New Yorker in 1961. It told a story of a young man's decision to quit his job at an A&P supermarket after an encounter with three bikini–clad girls. The story, seemingly mundane and trivial, exemplifies the type of social context which Updike was widely inspired by. During the story's writing, there were many elements of societal culture which influenced Updike in his work. This is evident in his usage of specific world references, colloquialisms, and particular societal movements in his story. In "A&P", Updike showcased some elements of popular middle class life, thoughts, and movements of the `60s. In search for inspiration for "A&P", Updike found it in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Jack De Bellis describes Updike's writing style in his book, the John Updike Encyclopedia, Updike "always contains a desire to describe perfectly an aspect of experience that will be acknowledged by others as the way we live". This is one of the reasons why Updike included specific world references in his story. During the time period Updike was writing, there were specific events that affected the way people thought. An instance where this is represented can be seen in Sammy's statement "...maybe in 1990 when it's called the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki Tea company or something" (Updike 142). During the time Updike wrote the story, there was tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the Cold War. Sammy believing the A&P supermarket would be renamed due to a Soviet Union takeover is evidence of the middle–class American thoughts during the time. As world references like this are included, it shows that the 1960s middle class carried much influence on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Analysis of John Updike's Stories: 'A&P' vs. 'Outage' In "Outage" and "A&P," John Updike attempts to explore different facets of suburban life through ordinary and common events. In "A&P," Updike explores how innocent ignorance influences a young cashier named Sammy and his views of suburbia. On the other hand, "Outage" explores the seething underbelly of suburbia and the events that occur when no one is looking, or in this case, when the lights go out. Through each work, Updike counters innocence with knowledge and rebellion against submission. In "A&P," Sammy is initially drawn to three girls, Queenie, Plaid, and Big Tall Goony Goony, perusing the grocery store and while he is drawn to the leader of the group, Queenie, he soon begins to note how they are a contrast of what middle–class suburbanites consider to be acceptable. Sammy notes, You know, it's one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on the beach, where what with the glare nobody can look at each other much anyway, and another thing in the cool of the A & P, under the fluorescent lights, against all those stacked packages, with her feet paddling along naked over our checkerboard green–and–cream rubber–tile floor. ("A&P") One of the things that is interesting about Sammy's observation is that the girls are judged harshly because of how they are perceived "under the fluorescent lights." Ironically, it can be argued that the general public's disapproval of the girls can be due to the "house–slaves in pin curlers" jealousies. The girls are representative of ... • 7. A & P By John Updike Analysis John Updike aims "to give the mundane its beautiful due" in his works, and this is shown in "A & P" by how he writes about an ordinary day, in this case in a grocery store, and makes the whole aspects of that normal event interesting with vivid details so that the readers can see the beauty of life, which others may easily just think is mundane or dull. His also focuses on the life of a young 19– year–old man, Sammy, working at the A & P store, having a normal day until he sees three girls wearing bathing suits and breaking the store's policy by wearing bathing suits. When the manager, Lengel, comes in the store and tells the girls they need to be decent and embarrassed them, Sammy shows an act of rebellion and quits his job. Sammy felt that he needed to go forth with his action, but in the end, he goes through a feeling of ambiguity and wonder of what life has in store for him in the future to come, just like how any young man ... For example, when she finally heard Queenie say that her mother had asked her to pick up a jar of herring snacks, hearing the tone of her voice immediately made him imagine Queenie's living room with her father and other people in there socializing and eating. Sammy also has negative aspects about his personality and attitude as he seems to look at the customers as sheep and thinks badly about his coworker, Stokesie. Sammy quits and rebels because he wanted to impress the girls and seems to have the urge to be admired in his life, and his desires to make new experiences and escape his dull life sparked when he set eyes on Queenie and imagined her sophisticated and high–level ... • 11. The Characters Of Maturity In John Updike's A & P In the short story A&P, Sammy the main protagonist how he changes from a childish teen to a person that stands up for what he believe is right. The theme in the story that stood out to me the most was maturity. This story is a coming of age how Sammy grows though out the story. Sammy makes an immature chose that he believes is the right to do. But, Sammy good action goes unnoticed by Queenie and her friends. As a result he is left to deal with his chose that he has made. In "A&P," John Updike shows that Sammy's immaturity stems from his crude personality, sexist beliefs, and irresponsible attitude. To Start, Sammy first displays crudeness throughout the story is he demonstrates little respect for experience and age. On one instance, he claims the fifty–year old woman, who yells at him for ringing her crackers up twice. While he is gauging at the girls, is a "witch ... [who] if she'd been born at the right time they would have burned her over in Salem." He should have some respect for her, not only because of the principle that she is a elder but she is also a women. Sammy claims that the only charastics between him and Stokesie , is that Stokesie has "two babies chalked up on his fuselage." His rude reference to Stokesie's manliness and his failure to acknowledge his life experience displays Sammy's complete immaturity. He removed his apron and bow tie and resigned on the spot despite the pain this would cause his parents. Lengel asks him if he said something and he repeats that he quit, saying "you didn't have to embarrass them." Lengel says the girls were the one embarrassing them. The narrator mentioned that Lengel is a friends of his parents and to make him think about his decision, Lengel tells him how disappointed his parent will be, saying, "you'll feel this for the rest of your life." • 15. The Sheep Revolution in John Updike´s A&P At first glance, "A&P" written by John Updike, looks like a funny, slangy, youthful story about a young, nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who has the normal problems that come along with his age group; abhorrence for his job, talking despondently about the older generation, and dreaming about girls he sees in the store. However, when people look at the history of the 1960's, they find it shows a change in American social values and morals. Furthermore, the revolution of multiple groups of minorities through the civil rights movement, such as women, gays, and African Americans just to name a few who were at the forefront of issues during the 1960's. Also, there was a revolt caused from the distrust of politicians, and from the 1950's "family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the biggest social groups that had some of the major impacts during the 1960's were the youths in America, consisting of late teens to the late twenties. However, others that fell into that age group had already cemented their future with earlier choices in their lives. For example, the checker that worked next to Sammy, his name was Stokesie, a young twenty–two year old who was already married with two children. Stokesie also holds the belief that he will become store manager someday, which fit the mold of the start from the bottom and only with hard work can one move up style of the out dated ideologies of the past decade. Stokesie represents everything from the 1950's "suburbiaism" that the youth revolution of the 1960's was against. Many have argued that this story has a feminist undertone to the main idea. Conceding, that going into public is a bit bold, especially for the time period shows somewhat of a revolt by the girls. Although, someone can contend that if a girl or girls went into a grocery store in a bikini during today's time, it would result in the same sort of reaction. One can also argue that the story is condescending toward women and shows them in a negative light. Especially, from the main character Sammy, with his description of the girls, also the nick names he gives the three girls like Plaid, Big Tall Goony–Goony, and Queenie. Moreover, the assumptions about how a girls ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Misfits Analysis Both Richard Donner's 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies written by Steven Spielberg, and Rob Reiner's 1986 coming–of–age drama Stand By Me based on Stephen King's novella The Body, portray several characters to be misfits in society. The Goonies follows the story of a group of misfits on a treasure hunt to save their home from foreclosure and Stand By Me is a writer's recount of the death of a friend and a boyhood journey to find the missing body of Ray Bowers. Narrative perspective, sound, characterisation, camera angles, and symbolism, contribute to various themes which Donner and Reiner exploit to evoke supportive emotion for misfits. In diverse methods, both directors seek to engender support for their misfits by the pursuit of their stories through differing perspectives. Donner refrains from applying narration and solely relies on dialogue, conversely, Reiner reveals elements of his characters through the eyes of Gordie Lachance, in first person narration. The lack of narration in The Goonies allows a viewer to experience the journey of the misfits through a neutral and an unfiltered perspective. Donner exposes his viewers to the perspective of several characters, which provides him the opportunity to create characters which relate with the numerous circumstances and personalities of viewers. The connection a viewer feels towards a character, lulls them to view matters similarly. Dissimilarly, first person narration provides Reiner the opportunity to immerse his ... • 21. Disrespectful Character Maturity In John Updike's A & P In John Updike's coming of age story "A&P," the protagonist Sammy sees what he believes to be an unfair act to three teenage girls in bikini in the grocery store. He makes an immature decision and quits in front of his manager that decided to address the girls about their clothing choice in front of the entire grocery store, instead of talking to them in private. Unfortunately, the teenage girls do not notice Sammy's heroic act, and he is left alone in the parking lot to face the repercussions of his childish actions. John Updike chooses to write in first–person, so the reader gets to know the narrator's real character. In his short story "A&P," John Updike demonstrates that Sammy is an immature character immaturity from his disrespectful personality, judgmental attitude, and misogynist beliefs. To begin with, Sammy shows a rude attitude through the story. He indicates little regard for other people's age or knowledge. To illustrate, Sammy asserts the old aged customer, who reprimands Sammy for scanning her item two times while he is gawking at the girls, is "a witch about fifty ... [who] would have burned her over in Salem" (Updike 320). Sammy's despise toward this old lady– in fact shoppers–is perceptible. • 23. A & P By John Updike Analysis The story "A&P" by John Updike has a lot of examples of point of view. The story starts off by saying "In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'm in the third checkout slot..."which tells us right away that the story is set in a grocery store and that the story is being told through the eyes of a grocery store clerk . There are some people who could probably figure out that it was set in a grocery store based on the title but, since the company became defunct in November of 2015 it's easy to guess that the store wasn't getting as much revenue as it used to back in 1962 when the story was written. He then goes on to describe the scene around him and how the presence of the girls throws off his usual work jive. This is very clear because most of the first part of the story is full of the narrator just describing the way the girls look in vivid detail. He describes one of the girls as the queen because she pretty much herds the other two around and looks like she holds herself above the other to, which he conveniently nicknames Queenie. The other two girls he describes as less attractive as Queenie but not unattractive. They end up also getting nicknames but, not until later into the story. He calls the girl in ... Lengel continues to criticize and tells the girls that his store "isn't the beach" and that next time they come to the store they are "decently dressed". After bagging up the girls' can of Herring Snacks, Sammy tells Lengel he quit, hoping to be "their unsuspected hero" and that the girls heard him. The girls did not hear him and continued to walk out of the door into the parking lot. Lengel tries to make Sammy feel guilty by telling him he will have to report to his parents but Sammy argues that the girls should not have been humiliated the way they were. He ends up taking his apron off and walking out of the store. Sammy then stands outside and looks back into the store and sees Lengel's "dark gray" face and stiff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the coming of age film, you see the main character emotionally transition into a adult. What makes the coming of age film special is the relationship the protagonist has with his or her group of friends. The coming of age film differs in friendships, depending on the gender of the main character. The friendships help shape how the protagonist is going to be by the end of the film, usually in a positive light. When the films characters are predominantly woman the film is usually emotional and sarcastic. The female friendships are not usually compromised and the girls are often loyal to a fault. • 37. Thesis For A & P By John Updike Essay 1: "A&P" Have you ever seen people just talk about the "point of view" as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person? Well the point of view is more important than you might think, the point of view sets the whole story together because without the point of view we wouldn't be able to know who is talking or how the main character feels. "A & P" is a great example of "point of view". (Thesis statement)– In this short/Humorous story, "A & P", John Updike includes lots of details on how the viewer's perspective of the situation matters since the situation mostly surrounds the speaker throughout the story and main details happen because of them and involves them. Sammy, the main character talking in the story, gives lots of details to what he sees and what he thinks. He describes the three girls (Queenie, Plaid, and Big Tall Goony Goony) as wearing only bikinis, how their face looked, and how they act. Sammy notice all the features of the three girls and explained it very understandable. " The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two–piece. • 39. Analysis of A&P by John Updike "A&P" (supermarket) is a short story written by the hardworking and highly productive John Updike and narrated in first person by a 19–year–old protagonist and cashier named Sammy. It was published in 1961 and is about Sammy's change of character and coming of age. Updike uses the various shifts in tone, great attention to detail, and a great deal of symbolism to portray the significant change. The opening sentence " In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits" (par.1) sets up the colloquial tone; it's as if Sammy was talking to a friend. As the story goes on, the tone shifts from being informal to a little comical. He refers to the people in the checkout lane as "sheep" and "scared pigs in a chute." However, by the end the tone shifts yet again and becomes heroic. The act of quitting a job (climax) in defiance of Lengel's (manager and antagonist) unfair treatment of the girls is a strong indication of change in character. Sammy hoped the girls would notice his act of heroism. Ironically, the girls do not hear him. Instead, they head out forever disappearing from his life. Sammy's description of A&P (setting) gives a dull and conventional illustration. On the contrary, the description of the girls was sharp and bright, characterizing him as a typical hormone– driven teenager. He describes the first girl, Plaid (nickname), as a "chunky kid, with a good tan" dressed in a bright green plaid two–piece bathing suit (par. 1). The second girl, Big Tall ... The story is simple, exquisitely put together, and fantastically detailed. It is told from the character Sammy's point of view. It is set in the A & P supermarket. Basically what happens is, these three girls come into the store wearing only bathing suits, which presents the conflict. Sammy describes them and follows their movements around the store. He gives them names including, Plaid, Big Tall Goony Goony, and Queenie. He took a particular liking to Queenie. When the manager Lengel took notice and began to berate the girls for their attire, which presents the crisis, Sammy didn't appreciate it (for he had started to feel somewhat responsible for them). He then quit his job, which presents the climax, after the girls were scolded. Perhaps because he sincerely thought that treatment was unfair or most likely to be seen as heroic. Sammy is used in this short story as a representation of adolescence. He demonstrates all the qualities of growing up. Such as immaturity, rebellion, and typical boy behavior. Exploring The Mind Of A 1960s Teenage Boy Paper II Draft III Exploring the Mind of a 1960s Teenage Boy "A&P" (1961), written by John Updike, explores the social conventions of the early 1960s and delves into the mind of a teenage boy named Sammy. Over the decades, occurrences that are considered socially "acceptable" have changed drastically. For example, in 2015, it is nearly commonplace to spy girls walk into stores in just their bathing suits–even in Thomasville, Georgia, despite the fact that the town is two hours from the nearest beach. However, in the 1960s, the much more conservative time in which the story "A&P" is set, such an act was quite scandalous. Finally, Sammy spotted "...the third one, that wasn't quite so tall. She was the queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking around and making their shoulders round (19)." True to the way he described her, Sammy called this girl "Queenie" because she appeared to be the leader of the group–their queen. It was immediately obvious that Sammy was drawn to this girl because while he briefly described the other two, he spent a large amount of time throughout the story describing and assessing the character of Queenie. Throughout the story, Sammy is quick to make inferences on the people's personalities, including the girls. I selected On Golden Pond because I had not heard of the movie beforehand. The 1980s was full of electronic music; however, this film featured no electronic pop. The film is only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film focuses on an older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named Billy, I believe the score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of piano and strings are apparent in both films. From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the scenery. It was gentle and non–threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano, and this is when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues to be soft. There were few moments of conflict where the music fills with brass sounds and takes on a tense feeling. Even though The Goonies are about kids who are outcasts, the kids in Stand by Me are closer to the actual definition of an outcast, which is someone who has been rejected by society. A & P By John Updike Paper 1: A&P by John Updike In this essay I will be reviewing the six elements of fiction: point of view, plot, setting, characterization, symbolism, and theme in the story, A&P by John Updike, to see how it constitutes to the work as a whole. Sammy, a 19–year–old cashier at the A&P, narrates A&P. In this first–person narrative, the narrator tells us everything as he sees it, but since it is a limited point of view the narrator is unreliable. But this allows the reader to notice growth in the character and it helps demonstrate how the narrator is different than the people around him, as his actions suggest. We notice a change in the point of view as the story progresses. At first we see the narrator complaining about the conformity in his society then later acknowledges the problem and acts on it. This occurs with the introduction of the girls, who are seen as mocking the conformity by wearing bathing suits into A&P. Seeing this, the narrator tries to show support for this act unconformity by quitting his job at A&P removing his bow tie and apron in the process when he feels the girls were mistreated and asked to leave store. With the introduction of the issue of conformity, which is a serious issue, we still notice the use of humor and irony in the tone though at the end even though the narrator felt he did the right thing by pointing out that the way the girls were treated was wrong and quitting his job, but he was left lost as his act was seen unnoticed, ending the story ... In Updike's A&P, Sammy stands up for three girls and quits his job. It all takes place in a town just north of Boston during the 1960's in a grocery store called A&P where Sammy works. One day three girls walk in with just swimsuits on, which is forbidden, and he just drools over them like the immature boy he is. By the time the girls are ready to check out the manager, Lengel, comes to tell them that their shoulders must be covered. At that precise moment he realized what a terrible mistake he had just made and all for nothing because the girls had already left. He quit his job all because of some girls. Sammy did not think things through and now has to face the consequences of not having a job. All that is left to do after such a mistake is to learn from that experience and not let it happen in the future. The theme of A&P is about maturity, acting without thinking and standing up for others. Sammy displayed a great amount of immaturity while the three girls were inside the store picking up the Herring snacks for the grandmother. When he first spotted the girls he could not stop looking at them and accidently scanned a customer's item twice; the customer was infuriated. He described the girls in great detail and gave them nicknames based on how they looked which is a little immature for a 19 year old. If Sammy had thought about his job as he did about those girls he would have kept his job. The fact that he quit his job just because of some girls proves that he is immature. But he deserves some respect because he stood up for the girls when the manager embarrassed and criticized them. This is just something that Sammy had to experience in order to become more mature and learn from his mistakes. While working at a local A&P quite a ways from the beach Sammy spots three girls in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. A + P Feminism Feminism in the 1960s There is an apparent biased view against women in the short story "A+P" by John Updike. Society is male–dominated and women are discriminated against, whether they know it or not. Such a restrictive culture and societal views are indicated by the inner thoughts of the narrator, Sammy, who is the clerk at the supermarket. The interactions of three girls with the rest of the townspeople are documented in Sammy's mind. Sammy's descriptions of people, the dialect of the characters, and the actions that are noted converge to reveal the nature of the time and place of the A+P supermarket. The majority of the story takes place in 19–year–old Sammy's mind. Here he describes, in detail, three girls in bathing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, the girls only speak when spoken to. This all indicates that the men of the society in "A+P" assume a superior role over the females. It is prudent not to miss the fact that the only time dialect is directed at the girls is when it is coming from a male and is against them, i.e. against what they are wearing and where they are, and there are no niceties towards the girls in this conversation in any way, shape, or form. The only occurrence of anyone defending the girls is when they have already been discriminated against and have exited the premises. The actions/interactions/reactions of the characters in this small setting also point to a female– suppressed environment. The males have the gall to stare openly at the girls as they go about their errands, while the women are shocked and "their eyes snapped back" to their respective business. Some might argue that this is normal for men to stare while the same sex–oriented people quickly avert their gazes. However, this is also indicative of a patriarchy. The status of the characters also indicates that even the store, an insignificantly small thing, follows the status quo of society. The males are the only ones with jobs, while the females are commented to be "houseslaves." The naming of the characters is also blatantly slanted against the females. Sammy gives the three girls names instead of taking the time to ask them if they even have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
