Drinking Water Through Tap Water
Tap water is not as safe for drinking as many people assume in many places and as many
governments tell us. Government bureaucrats make it seem as if their regulatory efforts are perfect
and complete, but there are many gaping holes in them. Tap water is often "cleansed" with chlorine.
Once thought to be a great and benign water cleanser even for drinking water, chlorine has now been
linked in numerous studies to causing cancer if consumed for an extended period of time. Tap water
delivery systems of cities, towns, and municipalities are often out of date, dirty, and rusting and pass
along filth such as rust into the tap water supply. Government regulations also arguably do not set
low enough "safe levels of consumption" for potential harmful ... Show more content on

Different filters are used for different water purification needs, and some of them improve the taste
of your water. One basic type of water filtration system is the faucet filtration system. This is the
kind your hook up right to your tap. As the water flows from your tank to your tap, the filter
cleanses it and makes it healthy for consumption. There is typically a loss of water pressure from
this, since the filtering membrane naturally slows the water flow down, so if you are going to use the
water for a non–consumption purpose such as washing your hands or doing dishes you can turn off
the faucet filter. With under–the–sink filtration systems the filter is installed such that the water
passes from the water tanks and through the filtration system before reaching the tap, so that what
leaves the tap is already purified. Some people prefer these or need these because they can be used
for getting rid of a wider array of potentially harmful things than can faucet

Cost Of Water Vs Tap Water
No we do not externalize the cost of water, simply because most water comes from tap water. In fact
all water is considered tap water just often purified throughout certain elements. The cost of water
really is not the issue it's more so the consumption of how many different water brands are being
sold and advertised. This is where pricing becomes interestingly charged, for example a regular
brand of water bottle can be charged in stores for about $1 or $1.09 at most. However you have
some brands like smart water and FIJI water can be much more expensive. This brings in the idea of
does there need to be a change in water price to ensure sustainable conservation. Yes a change in
water prices needs to happen, as stated in the article "How do

Bottled Water And Tap Water
Bottled water, from companies such as Poland Springs, Dasani, and Nestle Pure Life has become
one of the largest consumed drinks in America. According to Sean D. Daj, a Stockholm water
research prizewinner, there are approximately 475 bottled water plants in the U.S., producing 600
brands of bottled water. It is estimated that bottled water will soon become the nations second most
popular beverage after soft drinks (Daj). Bottled water is widely discussed because of its availability
elsewhere. Why do we buy bottled water when we have a free supply of tap water? In describing the
mass expansion of the drink Brian Howard, a writer from the Environmental Magazine, says,
"Bottled water is expected to pass both coffee and milk to become the ... Show more content on

When this occurs, the EPA notifies the town and gives them directions for what to do in an
emergency crisis. The tap water purification process uses chlorine disinfection to rid of
microorganisms that may enter the water supply. This may be the reason that some people say the
taste of the water is not as pure as bottled water. Bottled water uses ozone disinfection, which is
odorless and tasteless. In spite of the difference a Doctor from the Minnesota Department of Health
exclaims that consumers should feel safe in whatever water they decide to drink, regardless of the
process it undergoes (Bullers). Bottled Water, although we only imagine it being our classic plastic
bottles with paper labels, was first considered to be, "the practice of people being given a personal
container of water for spiritual or physical healing when visiting a holy site, or a venue where so–
called 'miracle water' was to be found" (A Brief History of the Bottled Water Industry). The first
bottled water dates back to the XVIIth century. As the uses of bottled water became more and more
for drinking, rather than its first use in medicinal benefits, its popularity expanded around the world.
Bottled water first came to the United States in Jackson Spa, Boston, Massachusetts in 1767. In
1854, The United States saw the first brand name water bottle. It was called Poland Water from
Maine. In the mid 1800s bottled water was

All tap water in the United States is to be tested annually and the results are sent to the consumers.
Tap water taste the same as the more expensive bottled water. Tap water is a healthy way to fulfil
your thirst, and you can find it in almost any building. No matter how you buy it water tap or bottled
it's the same regardless. Also tap water taste great, is convenient and is environmentally friendly.
Tap water is far more cheaper than bottled one water bottle can cost up to 2$, whereas tap water

Tap water does not have to go through a factory to be bottled, it only has to be purified. Tap water
produces less plastic since there is no need for water bottles. Tap water usually comes from a local
source so it puts less strain on wetland ecosystems. Tap water goes through many EPA standards
before it can be delivered to consumers, says"11 facts about your drinking water"
Tap water is convenient it can be filled with any water bottle or cup from any faucet around. Since
tap water is so plentiful it can be used as much as desired without having to worry about using too
much. Tap water is almost unlimited the water company always has an excess of water to use.
Because tap water is so easy to get most people just drink it over bottled water. Items like water
hoses help tap water be transported from one point to another. This make task like watering plants
easier.
Bottled water is a waste of money it goes through the same sanitation standards as regular bottles,
and is just as healthy as tap water. According to Standage tom in page two of his article he says
"bottled water is keep refrigerated until the sale", and that waste a lot of power. He also says how in
a blind taste test many people cannot tell the difference in tap and bottled water. Tap water is not in
all kinds of water bottles it goes through pipes, which are far more environmentally friendly. Water
from the tap is the cheapest way someone can acquire water.

The Smarter Choice A popular beverage in today's retail market can be harmful to consume. Thats
right bottled water can cause cancer! There's a safer alternative to drink, tap water. Tap water is
better than bottled water because tap does not get transported so it does not have the harmful heat
rays which may result into cancer. Tap water has low bacteria levels making tap water the best
choice to drink. Tap water is also the better alternative because it is environmental friendly. Another
benefit of tap water would be it is observed frequently to make sure it is user friendly. Tap water is a

Water Quality Of Tap And Filtered Water On Campus

How does the water quality of tap and filtered water on campus
compare to bottled water?
Background Information
Potable water is becoming more available in modern society and there are more ways of accessing it
than before. On Georgia College's campus it can be accessed through bottled, filtered and tap water.
In some places, droughts are affecting the amount of clean water when surface water is the main
source for drinking water (Leland et al 1993). This can cause water quality concerns that lead to
people buying bottled water rather than using tap water. Studies have been conducted that show
positive aspects for both tap and bottled water use (Doria 2006). Depending on the area that you ...

There might be a leak somewhere in the area if excessive amounts of coliform bacteria is found in
the water (Kissel 2014). Iron, although considered an aesthetic contaminant, has no ill health effects
and may have some benefits. The experiment will test water from on campus sources and compare
them in terms quality as a source of drinking water. The tap water should have the best water quality
compared to filtered and bottled water.
Ideally, all major sources of potable water should be safe and contain reasonable levels of
contaminants/additives due to the passing of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in 1974.
Although the SDWA has gone through numerous changes over the years to accommodate for the
widening body of knowledge concerning drinking water safety, its main purpose is to set legal limits
of harmful substances and encourage reasonable monitoring of said substances. The EPA cannot and
does not directly monitor the levels of harmful substances in drinking water, but it does require strict
monitoring (including reports when fecal contamination is detected) and regulates water sources to
ensure the safety of the public.
Bottled water is required to follow the same regulations that municipal water is. Oftentimes, this is
because the sources of bottled water is virtually identical. The FDA regulates the labeling of bottled
water and with enough general knowlege about the labeling process, one can determine

Tap Water Is Better Than Bottled Water
What do you prefer, tap water or bottled water. Many people believe bottled is the better choice, but
I disagree. I think tap is better for you than bottled, for many reasons. Here are just three of them,
bottled water means more garbage, bottled isn't any healthier than tap, and tap is less expensive than
bottled water is.
We'll start with how bottled water means more garbage. Most people, after drinking bottled water
throw away the bottle instead of recycling it. This is why 70 million percent of human waste are
bottles from water. Plus, a lot of times when you drive down the road the most occasional thing
you'll see are bottles. So, if your going to drink from a bottle then recycle

Is Bottled Water Better Than Tap Water?
Is bottled water better than tap water? Have you ever had any concerns about bottled water? Do you
think that bottled water is better than tap water? Bottled water is water packed in plastic containers
and sold for human consumption (Health Canada, 2013). Currently, the amount of bottled water
consumed has increased considerably since many people feel it is safer drinking bottled water than
tap water (Parent and Wrong, 2014). According to The Statistics Portal the global sale of bottled
water took a leap from 161, 589 to 181, 608 liters from 2009 to 2011. In the United States, each
American citizen consumed around 32 gallons of bottled water in 2013, thus meaning an equivalent
growth of 15% over 2009 (Statistics & facts, 2014). In fact, due to good portability, bottled water
has been helpful in both simple and complex situations such as daily exercises and natural disasters.
Even though having those few considerable advantages, bottled water still have been less benefits;
especially due to the negative impact in the socio–economic, health and environmental fields.
In contemporary society, bottled water consumption has become more attractive and popular. While
in 2009 161,589 million liters of bottled water were sold, in 2011 approximately 181.61 million
liters were sold all over the world (Statistics & facts, 2014). In this context, attributing that
significant growth of bottled water to commercialization and successful marketing should not be
considered a disposable

The Resource Of Tap Water
Water is a seemingly abundant source that is vital for basic life on Earth. This element not only acts
as a catalyst for human survival but is constitutional for certain entities of architecture such as
passive water cooling or permeable paving. Water is a renewable natural resource, but society's
uneconomical uses of this depleting resource may lead to a future of drought. Generally speaking,
one of the main types of water is tap water, which is water that undergoes through of series of
treatments that maintains a governmentally accepted water quality. In this paper, the resource of tap
water will be analysed through its process of its development, social expectations and inevitable
consequences that underlie in this resource.
Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom are the basic components which fundamentally make up
a water molecule. However with the process of water treatment, chemicals such as chlorine (Cl) or
ozone (O3) are added to improve the safety and quality of the water (Water, 2014). Before the
system of water treatment was adopted, drinking water was often contaminated with bacteria which
led to water–borne illnesses such as cholera and typhoid. The concept of treating water was adopted
in India using the technique of sunlight to destroy bacteria, charcoal filtering and storage of drinking
water in copper compartments (Water, 2013). The city of Toronto receives their tap water from Lake
Ontario and is filtered through Toronto's four Treatment Plants as

Bottled Water Versus Tap Water
The controversy of bottled water verse tap water can be argued on both sides. However, tap water is
the better alternative in the long run. Some may say there is a distinct taste difference between the
two, yet most can't tell. In a college classroom, a group of students completed an experiment where
they tasted a variety of waters: Great Value, Zephyrhills, and tap water. Most students guessed
incorrectly, not tasting a difference (Combass). Although people have concerns with tap water, it is
the most convenient. Not only is tap water cheaper, it is the safest source that positively impacts our
environment.
The Public Water System Supervision (PWSS) Program works with the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) to ensure tap water is safe for drinking. The EPA makes sure water drinking systems
undergo monitoring to assure the water is contaminant free. Water samples are collected and
assessed to make sure certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It reduces the likelihood of bottles being thrown around, which causes danger to our surroundings.
"Many more bottles end up in landfill where they slowly degrade, leeching their chemicals into the
soil" ("Tap Water or Bottled Water"). Most bottles people drink out of don't get recycled, they
become harmful to our environment. Each person that stops drinking bottled water, helps benefit the
environment just a little more.
Tap water is extremely cheaper than bottled water is. According to Livingston, tap water costs only
$2.00 every thousand gallons, whereas the cost per gallon of bottled water is $1.21. "That means,
priced by gallon, bottled water is more than 600 times more expensive than tap water" (Livingston).
Buying a bottled water may be cheaper at the time, however, that $1.00 or so adds up. When people
buy bottled water, it is often the same as tap, just that's been filtered or purified (Livington). So, why
spend money on bottled water when it's rather identical to tap, with no

Live Rock: Rocks that has dead, washed up coral and other organisms living on the rocks. Live rock
is the foundation of an aquarium. It also establishes biological filtration which helps keep the tank
fresh. Live rocks should always remain in the tank (Skomal, n.d).
2. Damselfish: Approximately about 1 damselfish should live in a 10 gallon aquarium. Ammonia
levels can increase and cause aggression to the fish, so only a small amount of fish should be in the
10 gallon tank (5 Freshwater Invertebrates For The Aquarium, n.d.).
3. 2–3 invertebrates: Hermit crabs are great for the aquarium because they can scavenge for food as
well as help keep the tank clean. They eat waste and other undesirable organisms. The Nerita snail
would be a wanted snail within your tank because they are the most ideal in controlling algae (5
Freshwater Invertebrates For The Aquarium, n.d.).
4. Algae: In order to maintain algae you must not use any unnatural chemicals that could harm the
marine life. Having many organism is most ideal because they can feed off the algae while keeping
it in control. Good algae is usually food for the marine life and the algae can range from all sorts of
colors, but green is the best. Nuisance algae is when the algae can contaminate the water and kill the

"Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans." (Lytle) As a result of discarded
water bottles many marine lives are affected every day. There are many issues that affect our
everyday life, events which are as small as money for gas to as big as the environment's health. The
choice to use tap water or bottled water may be small to some but a big problem to others. Not only

Using tap water is one of the best decisions someone could make for the environment. If someone

Safe Tap Water
By the middle of the twentieth century, spectacular efforts to improve water–quality treatment and
major investments in modern drinking–water systems had almost eliminated the risks of unsafe
water. Those of us who have the good fortune to live in the industrialized world now take safe
drinking water entirely for granted. We turn on a faucet and out comes safe, often free fresh water.
But those efforts and investments are in danger of being wasted, and the public benefit of safe tap
water lost, in favor of private gain in the form of little plastic water bottles. People argue that bottled
water is more convenient to drink than tap water, especially when people are out of the house and do
not have easy access to running water. Bottled water companies have recently made great advances
in reducing the environmental impact of their products, and now contribute only slightly to
industrial pollution each year. They stated that bottled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

resource at a time when energy resources are scarce. Additionally, critics say, non–recycled bottles
account for tons of waste each year. O'Rourke argues, "Our addiction to water purity is making the

Tap Water : The Better Choice
Tap Water: The Better Choice
"Tap water is much better than bottled water." "Tap water is bad for people; drink bottled water
instead!" These are examples of some of the arguments we have heard when discussing this subject.
People assume that one of the options is always better than the other. Most people do not look into
the facts as to why one is better than the other. If people do research on the subject, they might find
that tap water is better than bottled water. Tap water is better than bottled water because it is
cheaper, safer to use, easier to access and maintain, and overall better for the environment. People
may think that bottle water is cheaper than tap water, but bottled water is more expensive. In fact,
bottled water is ten–thousand times more expensive than tap water (Save Money...Paragraph 4).
Globally, the average amount of money spent on water bottles is one–hundred billion each year
(Karlstrom and Dell'Amore, Paragraph 3). Think of how much of that money could go towards
building tap wells in countries that do not have clean water. These tap wells will supply clean water
for only 1.7 billion dollars a year. This would be cheaper than buying bottled water. Bottled water is
also more expensive to produce. To make water bottles, "it takes up to four gallons of water to bottle
one gallon of water (Save Money...Paragraph 1)." The plastic bottle takes more water to make than
the amount of water that is actually put inside of it. If people were to convert from

Bottled Water Vs. Tap Water
BOTTLED WATER VERSUS TAP
Purer Water or Pure Hype?
Seventy percent of the human body is comprised of water. This makes drinking water quality vital.
The EPA estimates the average adult consumes 1.2 liters daily or 115 gallons of community (tap)
water daily while the average consumption of bottled water per capita in the U.S. is in excess of
30.8 gallons per year and is expected to continue to increase according to the International Bottled
Water Association (IBWA) and the Beverage Marketing Association's 2013 report. Bottled water
costs anywhere from 240 to 10,000 times more per gallon than the average cost of tap, but people's
perception that bottled water is purer, safer or healthier is driven, in part, by strong bottled water
marketing campaigns that focus on news reports about crises that involve municipal water supplies.
(NRDC, "Bottled Water Pure Drink or Pure Hype") The sources for both tap and bottled waters as
well as additives to either enrich or neutralize contents of water determine the mineral and chemical
composition of drinking water. Is bottled water really any purer or healthier than local tap water?
Drinking water provided by a municipality, "tap", is regulated by the EPA. Additionally, the Safe

Safe Drinking Tap Water
Water is your body's most important nutrient, is involved in every bodily function, and also makes
up more than half your body weight. Without it, people could not live for more than a week. It's safe
to say that drinking water is a necessity to live, but when it comes down to the regulation of it, there
is little to none. Tap water and, well yes, bottled water are increasingly getting criticised over the
amount of contaminants found in them each year. Humans are getting exposed to these certain
contaminants, which can greatly impact the human species. Tap water is water that is supplied
through different valves, which can be used in: washing, cooking, drinking, and even flushing
toilets. Drinking tap water is environmentally the safe way to go, since the plastic of a water bottle

Under the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974, it only imposes the regulation of 91 water
contaminants. In the United States, over 60,000 chemicals are used in processing tap water, which
ultimately can find their way into the water supplies (Martino). Many of which are categorized as
possible carcinogens, toxins you can find in cigarettes. Cities with older pipelines, Newburgh for
example, can also face numerous problems as chemicals leach from the pipes to the water supply.
So, what's really in our tap water? Most tap water contains arsenic, fluoride, chlorine, and even
miniscule amounts of pharmaceutical drugs (Brooks). The fluoride used in water fluoridation is a
mix of a number of highly toxic chemicals, which are radioactive chemicals, that are formed during
the production of fertilizer and aluminum. Hydrofluorosilicic acid, to be more exact, is a class 4
hazardous waste substance that is illegal to be dumped in the environment, yet is found in tap water
(Martino). For over the past 50 years, the United States have been dumping this fluoride additive in
our water supply under the disguise of a

to the higher filtration and purifying chemicals in the water. Tap water has chlorine while bottled
water does not. Tap water also has more flouride than bottled water. Maning that tap water is safer
than bottled water. Tap water also has higher safety and consumption regulations than commercial
tap water. Therefore Tap water is not just safe enough to drink, but it is also safer than bottled water

Many have asked, is bottled water better than tap? Which is better for our health? People have a
fascination with bottled water. Somehow, someone decided that tap water was not good for us and
along came the idea that bottled water is better. I believe that many of us would agree that the taste
of bottled water and the way it provides a more safer way to consume the water we need overrides
tap water. As consumers we try to make a safe decision in which water to drink but with all the
controversy, which is better? Despite thinking bottled water is the best of the best, bottled water

Everyone needs water in their life. People drink from different sources, some people like tap water
while others like bottled water. There is a big differences between both and why people chose one or
the other. It's very important to know what people think regarding this situation. We may be
destroying our planter or for instance we could be prevention ourselves from getting diseases.
Some people like to drink tap water instead of water bottled, there is many reasons why people like
it better. Some of the reasons can be that the tap water contains fluoride, a salt compound that helps
prevent cavities. A study in Cleveland, Ohio demonstrated that 5 percent of water bottled purchased

One big problem with water bottle is, well the bottle. Plastic pollution is enormous in the marine
environment, the plastic is distributed across all oceans because plastic photodegrades and it
disperse in the ocean as little particles. Small animals eat this particles and get poisoned and it pass
up to the food chain, which probably end up with us. It is estimated that 5.25 trillion plastic particles
weighting 268940 tons are currently floating at sea (Eriksen).
I think people should consider researching about the tap water in their zone and if it's good to drink
and give it a try. We are doing a great harm to our planet by supporting water bottled because all of
those bottles end up in oceans and affect marine lives. There is nothing wrong with drinking tap
water, the U.S have really good water systems and the water that get to our home is potable and safe

Comparing Bottled Water and Tap Water
In recent years the arguments against the bottled water industry have become much more prevalent,
as well as prominent in the arena of social and political debate.
Those who argue in favor of bottled water cite convenience and health among their number one
reasons. Those opposed the promulgation of the purchase and consumption of bottled water cite that
it is in fact, less stringently regulated and tested for impurities than tap water, these opponents also
claim that bottled waters' environmental toll far outweighs the positives in regard to convenience. So
what exactly are the facts? Bottled water is obviously more convenient, but is it safer?

Globally bottled water is a $60 – billion–a–year business" (Royte 6). These numbers are
astronomical, particularly in light of the fact that bottled costs between 240 to 10,000 times more
than tap water. On the low end, this would be the equivalent of paying $1500 for a $5 sandwich.
Safety and cost are not the only issues standing in opposition to the bottled water industry. There is a
definitive strain placed upon our environmental resources in every stage of the lifecycle of a bottle
of water, the first one being oil.
It takes 17 million barrels of oil each year to make water bottles for the US market. That is enough
oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. Of course this pales in comparison to the total amount of oil
Americans consume each day, 20 million barrels.
But, it also does not take into account the vast amounts of energy expended to fill the water bottles
as well as transport them to consumers. "Every week, a billion bottles snake through the country on
tens of thousands of trucks trains and ships. (In 2007 Poland
Spring alone burned 928,226 gallons of diesel fuel)" (Royte 139). Peter Gleick of the
Pacific Institute estimates that the amount of oil needed to produce, transport, and dispose of each
bottle of water would be, on average, the equivalent to filling each bottle half way with oil, a fact

The difference in density between salt water and tap water
I. Problem:
Will an egg float on fresh water or tap water?
II. Background Information:
Density is a measurement of how matter is in a certain volume/object. It is basically the
compactness of an object. If the molecules are closer to each other, therefore it's denser. If you
compare a cuboid Styrofoam and a cuboid metal, the metal would weigh heavier because it is
denser. The denser the object, the heavier the object and the tighter the molecules are. It is important
to know density because by knowing it you could determine if the object will float in water, which
has a density of 1.0, or any other solution with a known density. Just like

there was no lead, bacteria, or sodium detected by the test kits or the test strips that were used in any

hypothesis that was originally posed, correct. This was the same for the tap water from Quincy,
Massachusetts in both environments, thus not supporting the original hypothesis of the belief of
traces of lead or bacteria in the tap water of Quincy. However, the original pH estimates for the
different types of water were not correct. The hypothesis about how pH balance would decrease in

A color code was used to tell what the pH of the water was. For example, if the pH was 6, the pH
test paper would turn into the color yellow, and if the pH was 7, the pH test paper would be a light
green. Identifying the pH based on color could have slight human error as the pH could actually be
6.8, but when the pH of the water was tested, it could have been seen as a light green instead of a
darker yellow green, thus the pH would be identified as 7 instead of the proper 6.8. Another issue
that could've been caused from human error was that when measuring the amount of water by using
a graduated cylinder, it could've been measured a slight bit off. Originally, the amount of water that
was used for testing was 25mL. However, when measuring the amount of water, the water could've
been 24.9 mL instead of 25mL due to the miniscus being formed and where the meniscus was
believed to be. This would cause the amount of water being tested not the same for all the types of
waters. Another issue that could've affected the result was that the refrigerator that held the test
tubes that were in the cooler environment was frequently

Bottled vs. Tap Water
Water is an important source in this world and it is a source that all of us humans need. Without
water we wouldn't be living today. Water comes in many different ways but the most common and
the most talked about topic is, Bottled Water or Tap Water? There are many debates on which type
of water is safer, better in taste, and what is more convenient. The question is usually what tastes
better. I read in the article "is tap water as safe as bottled water?" "Tap water and bottled water are
generally comparable in terms of safety. So the choice of tap or bottled is mostly a matter of
personal preference." (Zeratsky) I completely agree with this statement. Everyone has his or her
own opinions. In most cases bottled water is what everyone goes for. For a person that is constantly
on the go and is always busy, bottled water is the way to go. Water is such an important source and

Assignment 3 In the New York Times article, Unsafe Lead Levels in Tap Water Not Limited to Flint,
journalists Michael Wines and John Schwartz give examples of various cities in America that have
had issues with lead contamination in public drinking water, signaling that the current water crisis in
Flint is not an abnormality. Washington D.C., Durham and Greenville, N.C., and Jackson,
Mississippi are some of the cities in the past 15 years that have been victim to lead contamination
(Wines and Schwartz). Although most of the public water systems in the Unites States are deemed
safe, these intermittent cases of contamination are the result of holes in safety rules and procedures
(Wines and Schwartz). According to Dr. Jeffrey K. Griffiths, professor of public health at Tufts
University and former E.P.A. chairman, there are many threats to the water supply in addition to
lead. Along with a multitude of potentially harmful contaminants and aging infrastructure, there is
also the possibility of an unprofessional or incompetent actor to break through protective safeguards
(Wines and Schwartz). While commonsense regulations and restorative measures, like new
provisions to the Clean Water Act or investments in new waterlines, have been proposed as solutions
to address these problems, they are met with blowback, with complaints ranging from intrusiveness
to the idea that more regulations unnecessarily hurt business (Wines and Schwartz). ... Show more

Most methods of purifying water used by the bottling companies, with the exception of just a very
few, use extreme filtration and ozonation to treat the water before bottling it. Neither of these
processes make the water healthier, and they are NOT better than what your water company does at
all. Plus the extreme measures of filtration tend to make the water acidic. The concensus between
the two main water quality regulating groups [EPA and EWG] and health research is that bottled
water is inferior in quality to tap water.

There is no difference in bottled and tap taste, it is unnoticeable. There are people who have
"specific" taste and prefer the "bottled water taste" because its more "sanitary." However, all the
things they spit out are false and in their heads. It is just them thinking the things the manufacturers
put on the bottle. Where do they think that water came from? It is all tap water, just "filtered" and
wrapped in plastic. Why waste tons of plastic? Our Earth is very polluted, and plastic bottles laying
around because some people are too lazy to recycle and reuse them is just another reason we should
throw the plastic out. Tap water is treated with chlorine (altnet.org,2016), which instantly kills all
bacteria. While some might say drinking chlorine all day is dangerous, it is mandated so there is
only enough to kill the harmful germs and viruses are put in the water and nothing more. Altnet also
says fluoride is mandated at the same 4 milligrams per liter. This protects against diseases and
cavities. Tap water is mandated and regulated much more than bottled water is, and there could be
more chemicals in bottled water than tap. Bottled water does help in some developing countries,
however. In some cities and towns, it is healthier and safer to drink bottled water than their tap
water. These developing countries do not have a regulated water system, and their water is dirty and

it comes to drinking water, people should be careful on choosing whether the water they are
drinking is pure and healthy for them or not. People can make their own choice to drink a tap water
or bottled water. Most people believe that bottled water is healthier than drinking tap water.
However, they should take a look at the adverse effects of bottled water before they consume it.
Bottle water companies spend a lot of money to produce the bottled water. Also, it is one of the main
reasons that cause pollution. Unlike bottled water, Tap water doesn't cause any harm to the
environment and it is more convenient. There are many reasons why people should drink tap water
because it is cheaper, it is better for the environment, and it is healthier. First, people have to look at
the price of bottled water or tap water and see which one is good for their pocket. It is clear that
bottled water costs more than tap water. According to The American Food and Drug Administration,
one bottled water costs $1. However, people can get the same amount of tap water with less than 10

Drinking Water Through Tap Water

  • 1. Drinking Water Through Tap Water Tap water is not as safe for drinking as many people assume in many places and as many governments tell us. Government bureaucrats make it seem as if their regulatory efforts are perfect and complete, but there are many gaping holes in them. Tap water is often "cleansed" with chlorine. Once thought to be a great and benign water cleanser even for drinking water, chlorine has now been linked in numerous studies to causing cancer if consumed for an extended period of time. Tap water delivery systems of cities, towns, and municipalities are often out of date, dirty, and rusting and pass along filth such as rust into the tap water supply. Government regulations also arguably do not set low enough "safe levels of consumption" for potential harmful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Different filters are used for different water purification needs, and some of them improve the taste of your water. One basic type of water filtration system is the faucet filtration system. This is the kind your hook up right to your tap. As the water flows from your tank to your tap, the filter cleanses it and makes it healthy for consumption. There is typically a loss of water pressure from this, since the filtering membrane naturally slows the water flow down, so if you are going to use the water for a non–consumption purpose such as washing your hands or doing dishes you can turn off the faucet filter. With under–the–sink filtration systems the filter is installed such that the water passes from the water tanks and through the filtration system before reaching the tap, so that what leaves the tap is already purified. Some people prefer these or need these because they can be used for getting rid of a wider array of potentially harmful things than can faucet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In fact all water is considered tap water just often purified throughout certain elements. The cost of water really is not the issue it's more so the consumption of how many different water brands are being sold and advertised. This is where pricing becomes interestingly charged, for example a regular brand of water bottle can be charged in stores for about $1 or $1.09 at most. However you have some brands like smart water and FIJI water can be much more expensive. This brings in the idea of does there need to be a change in water price to ensure sustainable conservation. • 9. Bottled Water And Tap Water Bottled water, from companies such as Poland Springs, Dasani, and Nestle Pure Life has become one of the largest consumed drinks in America. According to Sean D. Daj, a Stockholm water research prizewinner, there are approximately 475 bottled water plants in the U.S., producing 600 brands of bottled water. It is estimated that bottled water will soon become the nations second most popular beverage after soft drinks (Daj). Bottled water is widely discussed because of its availability elsewhere. Why do we buy bottled water when we have a free supply of tap water? In describing the mass expansion of the drink Brian Howard, a writer from the Environmental Magazine, says, "Bottled water is expected to pass both coffee and milk to become the ... The tap water purification process uses chlorine disinfection to rid of microorganisms that may enter the water supply. This may be the reason that some people say the taste of the water is not as pure as bottled water. Bottled water uses ozone disinfection, which is odorless and tasteless. In spite of the difference a Doctor from the Minnesota Department of Health exclaims that consumers should feel safe in whatever water they decide to drink, regardless of the process it undergoes (Bullers). Bottled Water, although we only imagine it being our classic plastic bottles with paper labels, was first considered to be, "the practice of people being given a personal container of water for spiritual or physical healing when visiting a holy site, or a venue where so– called 'miracle water' was to be found" (A Brief History of the Bottled Water Industry). The first bottled water dates back to the XVIIth century. As the uses of bottled water became more and more for drinking, rather than its first use in medicinal benefits, its popularity expanded around the world. Bottled water first came to the United States in Jackson Spa, Boston, Massachusetts in 1767. In 1854, The United States saw the first brand name water bottle. It was called Poland Water from Maine. • 21. Water Quality Of Tap And Filtered Water On Campus Terez Chapman Amelia Gardner Fiona Lien How does the water quality of tap and filtered water on campus compare to bottled water? Background Information Potable water is becoming more available in modern society and there are more ways of accessing it than before. On Georgia College's campus it can be accessed through bottled, filtered and tap water. In some places, droughts are affecting the amount of clean water when surface water is the main source for drinking water (Leland et al 1993). This can cause water quality concerns that lead to people buying bottled water rather than using tap water. Studies have been conducted that show positive aspects for both tap and bottled water use (Doria 2006). Depending on the area that you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There might be a leak somewhere in the area if excessive amounts of coliform bacteria is found in the water (Kissel 2014). Iron, although considered an aesthetic contaminant, has no ill health effects and may have some benefits. The experiment will test water from on campus sources and compare them in terms quality as a source of drinking water. The tap water should have the best water quality compared to filtered and bottled water. Ideally, all major sources of potable water should be safe and contain reasonable levels of contaminants/additives due to the passing of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in 1974. Although the SDWA has gone through numerous changes over the years to accommodate for the widening body of knowledge concerning drinking water safety, its main purpose is to set legal limits of harmful substances and encourage reasonable monitoring of said substances. The EPA cannot and does not directly monitor the levels of harmful substances in drinking water, but it does require strict monitoring (including reports when fecal contamination is detected) and regulates water sources to ensure the safety of the public. Many people believe bottled is the better choice, but I disagree. I think tap is better for you than bottled, for many reasons. Here are just three of them, bottled water means more garbage, bottled isn't any healthier than tap, and tap is less expensive than bottled water is. We'll start with how bottled water means more garbage. Most people, after drinking bottled water throw away the bottle instead of recycling it. This is why 70 million percent of human waste are bottles from water. Plus, a lot of times when you drive down the road the most occasional thing you'll see are bottles. • 30. Is Bottled Water Better Than Tap Water? Is bottled water better than tap water? Have you ever had any concerns about bottled water? Do you think that bottled water is better than tap water? Bottled water is water packed in plastic containers and sold for human consumption (Health Canada, 2013). Currently, the amount of bottled water consumed has increased considerably since many people feel it is safer drinking bottled water than tap water (Parent and Wrong, 2014). According to The Statistics Portal the global sale of bottled water took a leap from 161, 589 to 181, 608 liters from 2009 to 2011. In the United States, each American citizen consumed around 32 gallons of bottled water in 2013, thus meaning an equivalent growth of 15% over 2009 (Statistics & facts, 2014). In fact, due to good portability, bottled water has been helpful in both simple and complex situations such as daily exercises and natural disasters. Even though having those few considerable advantages, bottled water still have been less benefits; especially due to the negative impact in the socio–economic, health and environmental fields. In contemporary society, bottled water consumption has become more attractive and popular. While in 2009 161,589 million liters of bottled water were sold, in 2011 approximately 181.61 million liters were sold all over the world (Statistics & facts, 2014). • 34. The Resource Of Tap Water Water is a seemingly abundant source that is vital for basic life on Earth. This element not only acts as a catalyst for human survival but is constitutional for certain entities of architecture such as passive water cooling or permeable paving. Water is a renewable natural resource, but society's uneconomical uses of this depleting resource may lead to a future of drought. Generally speaking, one of the main types of water is tap water, which is water that undergoes through of series of treatments that maintains a governmentally accepted water quality. In this paper, the resource of tap water will be analysed through its process of its development, social expectations and inevitable consequences that underlie in this resource. Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom are the basic components which fundamentally make up a water molecule. However with the process of water treatment, chemicals such as chlorine (Cl) or ozone (O3) are added to improve the safety and quality of the water (Water, 2014). Before the system of water treatment was adopted, drinking water was often contaminated with bacteria which led to water–borne illnesses such as cholera and typhoid. The concept of treating water was adopted in India using the technique of sunlight to destroy bacteria, charcoal filtering and storage of drinking water in copper compartments (Water, 2013). • 38. Bottled Water Versus Tap Water The controversy of bottled water verse tap water can be argued on both sides. However, tap water is the better alternative in the long run. Some may say there is a distinct taste difference between the two, yet most can't tell. In a college classroom, a group of students completed an experiment where they tasted a variety of waters: Great Value, Zephyrhills, and tap water. Most students guessed incorrectly, not tasting a difference (Combass). Although people have concerns with tap water, it is the most convenient. Not only is tap water cheaper, it is the safest source that positively impacts our environment. The Public Water System Supervision (PWSS) Program works with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure tap water is safe for drinking. The EPA makes sure water drinking systems undergo monitoring to assure the water is contaminant free. Water samples are collected and assessed to make sure certain ... Tap water is extremely cheaper than bottled water is. According to Livingston, tap water costs only $2.00 every thousand gallons, whereas the cost per gallon of bottled water is $1.21. "That means, priced by gallon, bottled water is more than 600 times more expensive than tap water" (Livingston). Buying a bottled water may be cheaper at the time, however, that $1.00 or so adds up. There are many issues that affect our everyday life, events which are as small as money for gas to as big as the environment's health. The choice to use tap water or bottled water may be small to some but a big problem to others. Not only does tap water have many benefits, it also does not create the harmful aftermath that bottled water does. Tap water is a better choice in the long run because it improves the environment, is good for people's health and is financially a better choice. Using tap water is one of the best decisions someone could make for the environment. If someone were to walk on the beach or even down the street, they would see empty water bottles. Safe Tap Water By the middle of the twentieth century, spectacular efforts to improve water–quality treatment and major investments in modern drinking–water systems had almost eliminated the risks of unsafe water. Those of us who have the good fortune to live in the industrialized world now take safe drinking water entirely for granted. We turn on a faucet and out comes safe, often free fresh water. But those efforts and investments are in danger of being wasted, and the public benefit of safe tap water lost, in favor of private gain in the form of little plastic water bottles. People argue that bottled water is more convenient to drink than tap water, especially when people are out of the house and do not have easy access to running water. Bottled water companies have recently made great advances in reducing the environmental impact of their products, and now contribute only slightly to industrial pollution each year. The oil used to produce the bottles wastes a valuable resource at a time when energy resources are scarce. Additionally, critics say, non–recycled bottles account for tons of waste each year. O'Rourke argues, "Our addiction to water purity is making the world–and our water supplies–unhealthier than ever." Tap water in most people's opinion is just water that has chemical and can be really harmful because it comes from a municipal source. Our body is made up of 50–60% water and we should at least try to make that water clean and healthy and try to drink from the purest or what close to purest which is bottled water. These are examples of some of the arguments we have heard when discussing this subject. People assume that one of the options is always better than the other. Most people do not look into the facts as to why one is better than the other. If people do research on the subject, they might find that tap water is better than bottled water. Tap water is better than bottled water because it is cheaper, safer to use, easier to access and maintain, and overall better for the environment. People may think that bottle water is cheaper than tap water, but bottled water is more expensive. In fact, bottled water is ten–thousand times more expensive than tap water (Save Money...Paragraph 4). Globally, the average amount of money spent on water bottles is one–hundred billion each year (Karlstrom and Dell'Amore, Paragraph 3). Think of how much of that money could go towards building tap wells in countries that do not have clean water. These tap wells will supply clean water for only 1.7 billion dollars a year. This would be cheaper than buying bottled water. Bottled water is also more expensive to produce. • 87. Bottled Water Vs. Tap Water BOTTLED WATER VERSUS TAP Purer Water or Pure Hype? Seventy percent of the human body is comprised of water. This makes drinking water quality vital. The EPA estimates the average adult consumes 1.2 liters daily or 115 gallons of community (tap) water daily while the average consumption of bottled water per capita in the U.S. is in excess of 30.8 gallons per year and is expected to continue to increase according to the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) and the Beverage Marketing Association's 2013 report. Bottled water costs anywhere from 240 to 10,000 times more per gallon than the average cost of tap, but people's perception that bottled water is purer, safer or healthier is driven, in part, by strong bottled water marketing campaigns that focus on news reports about crises that involve municipal water supplies. (NRDC, "Bottled Water Pure Drink or Pure Hype") The sources for both tap and bottled waters as well as additives to either enrich or neutralize contents of water determine the mineral and chemical composition of drinking water. Is bottled water really any purer or healthier than local tap water? Drinking water provided by a municipality, "tap", is regulated by the EPA. In the United States, over 60,000 chemicals are used in processing tap water, which ultimately can find their way into the water supplies (Martino). Many of which are categorized as possible carcinogens, toxins you can find in cigarettes. Cities with older pipelines, Newburgh for example, can also face numerous problems as chemicals leach from the pipes to the water supply. So, what's really in our tap water? Most tap water contains arsenic, fluoride, chlorine, and even miniscule amounts of pharmaceutical drugs (Brooks). The fluoride used in water fluoridation is a mix of a number of highly toxic chemicals, which are radioactive chemicals, that are formed during the production of fertilizer and aluminum. These numbers are astronomical, particularly in light of the fact that bottled costs between 240 to 10,000 times more than tap water. On the low end, this would be the equivalent of paying $1500 for a $5 sandwich. Safety and cost are not the only issues standing in opposition to the bottled water industry. There is a definitive strain placed upon our environmental resources in every stage of the lifecycle of a bottle of water, the first one being oil. It takes 17 million barrels of oil each year to make water bottles for the US market. That is enough oil to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year. Of course this pales in comparison to the total amount of oil Americans consume each day, 20 million barrels. But, it also does not take into account the vast amounts of energy expended to fill the water bottles as well as transport them to consumers. "Every week, a billion bottles snake through the country on tens of thousands of trucks trains and ships. (In 2007 Poland Spring alone burned 928,226 gallons of diesel fuel)" (Royte 139). For example, if the pH was 6, the pH test paper would turn into the color yellow, and if the pH was 7, the pH test paper would be a light green. Another issue that could've been caused from human error was that when measuring the amount of water by using a graduated cylinder, it could've been measured a slight bit off. Originally, the amount of water that was used for testing was 25mL. However, when measuring the amount of water, the water could've been 24.9 mL instead of 25mL due to the miniscus being formed and where the meniscus was believed to be. Tap Water Problem Assignment 3 In the New York Times article, Unsafe Lead Levels in Tap Water Not Limited to Flint, journalists Michael Wines and John Schwartz give examples of various cities in America that have had issues with lead contamination in public drinking water, signaling that the current water crisis in Flint is not an abnormality. Washington D.C., Durham and Greenville, N.C., and Jackson, Mississippi are some of the cities in the past 15 years that have been victim to lead contamination (Wines and Schwartz). Although most of the public water systems in the Unites States are deemed safe, these intermittent cases of contamination are the result of holes in safety rules and procedures (Wines and Schwartz). According to Dr. Jeffrey K. Griffiths, professor of public health at Tufts University and former E.P.A. chairman, there are many threats to the water supply in addition to lead. Along with a multitude of potentially harmful contaminants and aging infrastructure, there is also the possibility of an unprofessional or incompetent actor to break through protective safeguards (Wines and Schwartz).
