Ghost towns may result when the single activity or resource that created a
boomtown is depleted or the resource economy undergoes a bust.

HUMAN INTERVENTION.
River re-routing, construction of Dams and Massacres are a few factors which
lead to the formation of ghost towns. Construction of Roads bypassing a
particular town can also lead to the decay of said town.
DISASTERS.
Natural and man-made disasters can create ghost towns.
DISEASES & CONTAMINATION.
Significant fatality rates from epidemics have produced ghost towns.
8. Hashima is a small island off the
coast of Nagasaki. It was first
settled in 1887 as a coalmining
colony. It was purchased by
Mitsubishi Group in 1890.

9. Hashima remained a hive of
activity for the next several
decades, especially during World
War II, when the Japanese forced
thousands of Korean laborers and
Chinese POWs to toil in its mines.
As petroleum replaced coal in
Japan in the 1960s, coal mines
began shutting down across the
country, and Hashima's mines
were no exception. Mitsubishi
officially closed the mine in
January 1974.

12. Oradour-sur-Glane is a commune in west-
central France, and the name of the main
village within the commune. The original
village was destroyed on 10th June, 1944,
when its inhabitants were massacred by
the military forces of Nazi Germany led by
Adolf Diekmann.

13. Diekmann's battalion sealed off the
village and ordered everyone within
to assemble in the village square to
have their identity papers examined.
The women and children were
locked in the church and killed with
explosives, while the village was
looted. The men were led to six
barns and sheds, where they were
machine gunned.

16. Pripyat is a ghost city in Ukraine. Its
name was derived from the name of the
river it was built on. The city was
founded back in 1970 as the ninth
nuclear city of the USSR. The main
purpose of the city was serving a huge
nuclear plant, Chernobyl, which was
located nearby.

17. But disaster struck on 25th April,
1986. During a late-night safety
test which simulated a station
blackout power-failure, in the
course of which safety systems
were intentionally turned off, a
combination of inherent reactor
design flaws and human error
resulted in uncontrolled reaction
conditions which lead to a open-
air graphite fire, which lasted for
9 days.

20. Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the
south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the
state of Tamil Nadu in India. The name of
the town literally translates to‘end of bow’.

21. On 22nd December, 1964,
Dhanushkodi was ravaged by a
massive cyclone. The entire town
was marooned and the
Government of Madras declared
Dhanushkodi as a Ghost town,
unfit for living.
