After many South Asian countries gained independence following World War 2, internal disputes arose over territories and borders. One such dispute was between Indonesia and Malaysia over the Borneo Islands. The 31st ASEAN meeting was held in November 2017 in the Philippines to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN. Key agreements signed included the ASEAN Connectivity Master Plan 2025 and a free trade agreement between ASEAN members. India has grown its relationship with ASEAN over the past 25 years, with two-way trade reaching $71 billion in 2016-2017, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement is expected to boost trade further.
