1. The Independent Press Standards Organisation are an
independent regulator for magazines and newspapers in the
UK. Their main aim is to ensure that all magazines and
newspapers within the UK follow the rules whilst publishing
articles. They can also fine up to £1million in certain publishing
cases.
The editor establishes codes of practise so it is to be followed
by newspapers and magazines. There is known to be 16 rules
that newspapers and magazines to follow.
2. Some of the rules are:
Accuracy: The media are not allowed to publish any content which is not
accurate and aren’t misleading.
Privacy: They also have to make sure they are respecting the persons
privacy if they are involved in the topic they are reporting about,
Harassment: Whilst reporting, journalists have to ensure they are not
harming anyone/ anything.
Intrusion into grief or shock: They have to be sympathetic to any
information/story which involve shock or grief.
Children: They must not involve children's photos or details with out
parent/ guardians consent.
3. Children in sex cases: If the report involves a child underage the press cannot reveal any
detail about the child.
Hospital : journalists need to provide proof of identity and get permission before
entering any non-public area of the hospital.
Reporting crime: They need to receive permission from family relatives/ friends in order
to comment on the specific story about them.
Clandestine devices and subterfuge: The media cannot publish any content which comes
from hidden cameras or clandestine devices.
Victims of sexual assault: They cannot identify victims of sexual assault.
4. Discrimination: The media cannot be discriminative to anyone when it comes to gender,
race, disability, sexual orientation or religion.
Financial journalism: The journalists involved with the magazine/ newspaper must not
use their own profit financial details they receive in advance of publications, they also
cannot pass information to other people.
Confidential sources: They have a moral obligation to protect confidential information.
Witness payments in criminal trials: they cannot offer any payments to witnesses to get
information.
Payments to criminals: They also cannot offer payments for stories, images or
information in order to exploit an criminal.
5. This code does not involve miscarriage of justice, which means the press
will not have a bias opinion of someone/ something who was sentenced to
a crime they did not participate in.
The code also does not cover the taste and decency of picture or sources
of content, meaning that the press can publish images/ content of their
own like if they want even if they are indecent.
The code also does not involve protecting public health and safety.
The code of practise does not involve phone hacking as it is seen as
invading a persons privacy, the phone hacking scandal broke four major
rules within the practise.
